Evidence of his place of birth is conflicting. The 1860 Illinois census says he was born in Ireland, about 1850.

However, his brother Robert's birth was recorded in 1846 at St. Fiaac's Church, Clonegal, County Carlow, Ireland. Identity confirmed by correct birthdate of 7 June 1846. Parents Joseph and Mary Jolly.

On 12 April 1848, Joseph Jolly was born to Joseph and Mary. Baptism date is left blank. Although his birthdate was elsewhere recorded as 12 July 1847, I believe this is him and the correct date of birth. Why he cited it as a year prior and a different month is not clear. Did he not know for sure? Did his mother forget it?

Most census indicates his birth in Illinois

His 84th birthday was celebrated in 1931, and the newspaper article gave his birth date as 12 July 1847 and his birthplace as "Whitton County, Illinois." There is no Whitton County and the family was known to have lived only in Macoupin and Montgomery Counties of Illinois, though there may have been other locations,

• NEWS: 10 Oct 1913, Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri, USA; The Laclede County Republican: "Mrs. Joe Jolley After a brief illness, Mrs. Joe Jolley died on last Sunday afternoon, at 12:25 o'clock, at the family home, in Lebanon. Mrs. Jolley was taken sick on Wednesday of last week with bilious and malarial fever, a stomach trouble the developed later being the immediate cause of her death., She was 64 years old. Funeral service was held on Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock, at the family home, Rev. A. M. Livingston of the Madison Avenue M. E. Church, officiating and Rev. J. W. Jesse, of the Baptist Church, assisting. The music was a beautiful feature of the service, a choir composed of Rev. and Mrs. A.M. Livingston, Mrs. J. A. Hughes and Rev. J. W. McKean, singing "Blest Be the Tie," "Jesus lover of My Soul" and "My Latest Sun Is Sinking Fast." Interment was in the Lebanon cemetery. The sons and sons-in-law of the deceased acted as pall bearers. Eliza Elizabeth Bolles was a daughter of Reuben Bolles and was a native of Tennessee where she was born February 23, 1849. In her girlhood she came to Laclede County with her family and has since resided here. In November, 1869, she was married to Joseph Jolley, spending most of her married life on their farm, in the High Prairie neighborhood. About eight years ago, she moved to Lebanon with her family, and continued to reside here until her death. She was a member of the M. E. Church, and throughout her life was a consistent Christian, living according to her church and its teachings. She was the mother of nine children, all of whom survive her. They are: Mrs. Jane Bolles and Mrs. May Tyson, of Lebanon; Mrs. Effie Wood, of Oakland; Mrs. Cora Park, Mrs Maude Summer, Ranclar, Fred, John and Roy Jolley, all of Kanasas City. All of the children and grandchildren were present at the funeral. Mrs. Jolley is also survived by her husband and her two sisters, Mrs. Jane Atchley and Mrs. Nancy Burns. Mrs. Jolley's death is mourned by a large circle of relatives and friends. She was devoted as a wife and mother and was especially beloved in the family circle. She was a kind neighbor and enjoyed the high esteem of all the community. Death flame peacefully and brought to her a welcome release from suffering. She was conscious to the last, and, after expressing many times her wish to meet her family and friends in the after life, she quietly fell asleep."

• Biography: 1986; Written by Clara Farmer, a granddaughter of Joseph Webster Jolley and great granddaughter of Joseph Joshua Jolley, in 1986, when she was 90. Clearly flawed but still useful and interesting.

  "Joseph Joshua Jolley left Dublin, Ireland in 1855 to seek his fortune in America. He left behind his wife, Mary, and three children: Robert, Nellie [Ellen], and Joe, who would follow him a year and a half later. Settling in a small town in Illinois, near Chicago, he built the first log cabin in that State. He worked long hard hours and finally got the money to send for his family. Mail and transportation were slow and after several months of waiting, he gave up hopes of his family joining him. Through his work on the School Board he met a young woman, Bessie Johnson, who had moved soon after their meeting to New York. Grandpa wrote and asked Bessie to marry him. When Bessie got his letter, she was thrilled and took the next stage back to Illinois to marry Joseph. On the stage, Bessie met and became friendly with a young woman who was coming from Ireland with her three children to be with her husband. Traveling as they did for several weeks the two women became close friends. They soon learned they were meeting the same man! Bessie returned to New York. Joseph became a naturalized citizen about 1860 and served in the Civil War. He served with his son, Robert until 1866. Returning to civilian life, he became the treasurer of the school board and "borrowed" money for a new house, from the school funds. The shortage was discovered, before he could "repay" the money and spent a year in jail. He then became a Bible salesman. Returning drunk one night from a long sales trip, he fell from the wagon and broke his neck. So ended the long and colorful life of Joseph Joshua Jolley. By Clara Farmer, his granddaughter. I did however want to ask if you knew a more specific date than just 1860 for the possible court case. Our Montgomery County Court Record Files are not indexed and the only form of organization is by Court terms (i.e. September 1860). If there is any further information you can provide for us regarding this court case we would greatly appreciate it. We did however, search our Montgomery County Court Record Books but were unable to locate anyone with the last name of "Jolly" in those records for the time period of 1860. Birthplace from his 1850 census. Also granddaughter Ella's 1930 census named her father's birthplace as "Free Ireland. Her father was Robert T. Jolly, born prior to immigration. Another of Robert T. Jolly's children, Nancy, stated in 1930 her father's birthplace of "Northern Ireland." Mary Effie Jolly, daughter of Joseph Webster Jolly stated her father's birth place as ""Irish free state."

While these granddaughters are addressing only the place of birth of their own two fathers, not the grandfather, they are still helpful clues to the family's whereabouts.
