    Other Events:

    • Narrative: From Desmond Gillmor's paper on his Iowa Gillmor family: "Prior to the discovery that my great grandparents had been in Iowa, I had found that there were two Gillmor families from County Sligo in Iowa in the 1850s. It seems quite likely that both were related to my family but this has not been proved. One Gillmor emigrated from Emlafad Parish, Ballymote and there is a belief in both our Irish families that they are related. The other had lived just across the Leitrim/Sligo border and only a mile from the residence of my earliest known Gillmor ancestors. I have been in contact with descendants of both former Iowa families. No evidence of locational influences or even contacts between these families, either before or when they were in Iowa, has emerged but it would seem that these must have been possibilities. A Stewart Gillmor, who was almost certainly a native of Ballymote, arrived in Scott County, near Davenport on the Mississippi, in 1847 with his wife Rebecca and their children. In a biography of his eldest son Stewart (1832-1902), it was stated that the name Gillmor was an old and familiar one in Scott County, the family having been associated with the agricultural life of eastern Iowa from pioneer times22. In 1859 Stewart married Mary A. Connor, whose family had come to Scott County from Ontario, Canada in 1846, but her parents had been born in Ireland. They had seven children. Stewart was an extensive farmer and stock-raiser, the Gillmor farm having expanded from an original 40 acres to 337 acres of prairie and 40 acres of timber land23. Although Stewart was described as modest and retiring, he exerted a considerable influence on the community and political life of Scott County and he was known for his integrity and generosity. It was largely through his effort and financial help that a House of God place of worship was erected on his farm. The Gillmor family had been in Allen?s Grove Township from 1857 and gravestones relating to five members of the family were in the Allen?s Grove Cemetery when we visited it. They included that for Stewart, born in Sligo, and his wife Mary. A George Gillmor was one of six children of a Thomas Gillmor who lived in Killery Parish, between the Sligo village of Ballintogher and the Leitrim border24. He married Maria McConnell in Dromahair in 1845. They sailed to New Orleans, where she and a baby girl died of cholera in 1846. George then went to New York, where he married Belfast-born Margery Campbell in 1850. They migrated with their son to Story County, central Iowa in 1854. They farmed in Milford Township but George also worked as an expert stone mason. One indication of life at that time was the threat of Native American raids. The couple were very successful in the development of their farm and the accumulation of wealth and they were highly respected in the community because of their hard work and integrity. They were committed members of the Ames Baptist Church but contributed generously to the building of other denominations? churches. Only their son lived to maturity, two daughters dying in childhood. Mary died in 1892 and George in 1900."
