"Thought He Was Fighting Devil Suffering with the hallucination that he was being followed by the devil and, when the latter was not hovering about him, millions of spirits were mocking him and leering at him, Thomas B. Grady, a resident of Maroa, was given a hearing in the county court Friday afternoon on an insanity charge. In addition to the above visions Grady also felt that he was being constantly pursued by parties, who desired to shoot him. Matters became so grave that Grady refused to stir off his place. Oother [sic] members of the family began to feel that it was dangerous to have him about the place, as on such occasions he would attempt to right the 'devil', likewise the spirits. Consequently his arrest was caused. Thec ourt [sic] ordered the man taken to the hospital at Jackson villa. Marshal A. M. Biddle will take him to that institution Saturday."

    Notes:

    Name:
DJ Brannan offers her birthdate as September 1859. Clearly, she was born in 1849, but possibly in September?

    Birth:
Mary Jane's 1894 marriage to David Reid, record states her birthplace as Lockport, NY

    Died:
DJ Brannan doc indicates she was still living in 1925, no source.

Mary married John L. Jamison about 13 Aug 1874 in Macon County, Illinois, USA, and was divorced on 11 Dec 1881 in Macon County, Illinois, USA. John (son of John G. Jameson and Sarah Druscilla "Sally" Beebe) was born about 1852 in Illinois, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Married:
Mary's 1900 census entry as Mary J. Grady confirms this as her likely marriage.

Mary appears to be known as Mary J. Hunt for the remainder of her life. Could this have been a brief marriage after which she returned to the name of Hunt?

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Josiah Pratt was born about 1818 in New York, USA (son of Josiah Pratt and Rebecca [Rogers Jackson]); died on 23 Jul 1869 in Macon County, Illinois, USA; was buried in Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta, Macon County, Illinois, USA.

    Other Events:

    • Parents:

    • RESEARCH:
Orinda appears in the 1875 Marshall Co Kansas state census with husband Rudolph Smith. Next door to them is a Hurlburt family from Wisconsin and NY. Possible connection to George Gilmore's sister Jane who was married to a Hurlburt?
    • Census: 1840;
A Josiah Pratt appears in the 1840 Niagara Co NY census, but the profile does not appear to fit our family:
Josiah Pratt 1 male of 5 and under 10 1 male of 15 and under 20 1 male of 30 and under 40 1 male of 40 and under 50 1 female of 10 and under 15 1 female of 15 and under 20 1 female of 30 and under 40 6 total [sic] 1 engaged in agriculture

Could these persons be Vienna (abt 18) and George (abt 28). George's age is wrong, but they are not found elsewhere in census, and the Macon Co 1865-66 tax book lists him. It is likely that this is them. He would account for the 1 male of militia age.] Since "Josiah" Pratt was taxed in this township in 1865-66, this is certainly him. Possibly the enumerator abbreviated "Jos. Pratt" and latter transcribed as Joseph? Heard it wrong? Perhaps he used Joseph and Josiah interchangeably? I have never seen it used for him elsewhere, so more likely to be an error.]
    • Land: 30 Nov 1868, Josiah Pratt property, Macon County, Illinois, USA; SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 2, Township 18N, Range 3E, 3rd principal meridian. 40 acres. Reserving a 200-ft right of way for the rail that runs through it. Purchased by Josiah Pratt from Illinois Central Railroad Company. Drawn 30 Nov 1868, filed 9 August 1869.

    Notes:

    Birth:
Age in 1850 census appears to be 30, but may be 36, which would again come out to approximately 1814 for birth. 1850 census gives Canada as his birthplace, while the 1860 gives New York. 1855 census also gives Canada as his birthplace. It seems likely that the earlier census is correct on this point.

DJ Brannan document states that he was probably born in Brome, Lower Canada, abt 1820

Age in May 1841, marriage, stated as 22.

Josiah married Nancy Melinda Peterson on 13 May 1841 in Cambria, Niagara County, New York, USA. • A newspaper item from the Decatur newspaper notes a license issued to John G. Jamison and ?Mrs. Pratt? on 15 August 1872. ["Marriage Licenses," The Decatur Weekly Republican (Decatur, Ill.), 15 August 1872, p. 1, col. [?], for John G. Jamison and Mrs. Pratt; digital image, Ni (http://www.newspapers.com/ : accessed 27 May 2015).]
      • Mary Jane married John G. Jamison?s son, John L. Jamison two years later.
      • Nancy M. Pratt disappears from the Niagara County records after 1870.

      • John G. Jimmerson and wife Nancy appear in the 1880 census in Friends Creek township, where the Gilmores and Pratts were known to reside. In conflict: Nancy Jameson's age and birthplace in 1880 census for Macon County.
      • Census: 29 Jun 1855, Cambria, Niagara County, New York, USA; 1. Pratt, Josiah, home construction log, [no value stated], 35, male, born in Canada, married, lived in Cambria 15 years, farmer, naturalized, owns land 2. _____, Melinda, 36, female, wife, born in Orleans Co NY, married, lived in Cambria 15 years 3. _____, Orinda, 10, female, child, born in Niagara County 4. _____, Ithusa [Vienna Arthusa], 8, female, child, born in Niagara County 5. _____, Mary, 5, female, child, born in Niagara County 6.
