    • Obituary: After 30 Dec 1918, Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA; Mother and Babe Both Dead Cliff Innes and four motherless children have the deep sympathy of our people in the bereavement that came to them Monday, through the death of Mrs. Innes and one of a pair of twin boys to whom she gave birth on that date. The other twin is alive as this is written. Mrs. Innes had been in failing health for some time, and her husband brought her back here from Sterling, Colo., about ten days ago in hopes that a lower altitude would help her, but childbirth proved too much for one in her weakened condition. Funeral services were held this forenoon and the bodies of the mother and babe in the same coffin were laid to rest in Fairview cemetery. Mrs. Innes, a daughter of Mrs. Will Bucklin of this city, was aged 30 years, 8 months and 6 days, and had lived practically all her life in Smith county. Besides her husband, children and mother she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Arch Wilson, and two brothers, George ofWashington township, and John, of Athol. Only last week we carried a news item about the suicide of their father, Will Bucklin, at Byers, Colo.
    • Obituary: 2 Jan 1990, Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA; "Mrs. Cliff Innes Dies Mrs. Cliff Innes passed away at her home here Monday morning after giving birth to twin babies. One of the little sons gave up his life at the same time that his mother passed away. The other child is still living. The mother was much inclined toward heart trouble. She had had six children before, three of whom died and three are living. Funeral services were held this morning from the home, having been delayed in the hope that the deceased's brothers might get back from the west where they had been called on account of the death of their father."

    Notes:

    Birth:
Census data varies widely as to his age and calculated birth year. Most internet family trees give a date of 15 November 1863 for his birth. The Colton book gives the latter, as well.

Place of birth differs, as well. Often given as Hampden County, Massachusetts, but also seen as Iowa. His first two Kansas state census stated birthplace Iowa, as did his 1880 census in the home with his parents, offering an age of 16. It seems likely that he was born in Iowa.

His father's 1863 U.S. draft registration was in the 5th Congressional District of Iowa (representing 22 counties in the SW quadrant of Iowa), which supports his birth in Iowa.

Mrs. Alice Bucklin Laid to Rest Sunday Rites From Methodist Church; Burial In Fairview Cemetery The funeral of Mrs. Alice Buvklin was held from the Smith Center Methodist church Sunday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ranold [sic] Plott officiating. Burial was in Fairview cemetery. Mrs. Bucklin, 85, lived in Smith Center for 72 years. Alice Melinda, daughter of Vienna A. and George W. Gilmore, was born July 23, 1867 in Macon county, Ill., and passed away Dec. 5, 1952 in Smith Center. She came to Smith Center with her parents at the age of five years. On Nov. 28, 1884 she was united in marriage to Willard Livere Buckling. Six children were born to this union. Surviving are Eugenia, Mrs. Arch Wilson, Smith Center; and John, Colorado Springs, Colo. Preceding her in death were three daughters, Hattie, Mrs. Clifford Innes, in 1918; Minnie in childhood, and Alice Fern in infancy; and a son, George, who passed away in 1940. In 1892 they moved to Rawlins county, Kansas and resided there for eight years, then returned to Smith Center where she lived until her death. She joined the Methodist church while in Rawlins county and after returning to Smith Center, her letter was transferred to the Methodist church of that city. At her advanced age Mrs. Bucklin was still piecing beautiful quilts and doing fancy work. She also did her own letter writing. In addition to the children previously mentioned she is survived by two brothers: George Gilmore, Lebanon, Mo. and Tom Gilmore, North Platte, Nebr.; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, a large number of nieces and nephews and by a host of friends who mourn her departure."

    Notes:

    Birth:
1870 Macon Co IL, Alice was 11 months old, calculating to birth in July 1869

Geo W in a pension statement gives her birth as 23 Aug 1868.

Death cert also states 23 July 1867.

There is some conflict regarding Alice (Gilmore) Bucklin's birth date. The obituary offers a date of 23 July 1867; her father, in a pension statement, offers 23 August 1868; the 1870 Macon County, Illinois, census states that Alice is 11 months old, born the previous July. The latter, while secondary evidence, is direct evidence, given closer to the time of the event, and carries more weight. All accounts agree on the day as the 23rd of the month. Only her father's statement offers the month of August rather than July.

    Children:
    1. Eugenia May Bucklin was born on 2 Oct 1885 in Smith County, Kansas, USA; died on 18 Apr 1955 in Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA; was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA.

    • Military: 2 Jun 1862, Stephenson County, Illinois, USA; George enlisted, mustering into Company H, 67th Illinois Infantry as a private. He served 3 months, probably on guard duty (or other duty) at the camp for Confederate prisoners, Camp Douglas.
    • Military: Jun 1863, Harlem, Stephenson County, Illinois, USA; George Gilmore, age 24, married, class 1 (most eligible for draft), born in Ireland. This is the only known instance of his admission of Irish birth.
    • Military: Jun 1863, Jefferson township, Stephenson County, Illinois, USA; George is listed in the draft, but this time in Jefferson Twp, and as "in 3 months service." This time he lists birthplace as Canada.

These are probably Vienna (abt 18) and George (abt 28). George's age is wrong, but they are not found elsewhere in census, and the Macon Co 1865-66 tax book lists him. It is likely that this is them. He would account for the 1 male of militia age.] Since "Josiah" Pratt was taxed in this township in 1865-66, this is certainly him. Possibly the enumerator abbreviated "Jos. Pratt" and latter transcribed as Joseph? Heard it wrong? Perhaps he used Joseph and Josiah interchangeably? I have never seen it used for him elsewhere, so more likely to be an error.]
    • Move: Between 1863-1865, Macon County, Illinois, USA; Sometime after his March 1863 marriage to Vienna, they moved, apparently with her family, to Macon Co IL.
    • Tax Lists: 1865-1866, Friends Creek township, Macon County, Illinois, USA; Appeared on tax list for Macon County, along with his father in law Josiah Pratt.

    • NEWS: 14 Apr 1882, Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA; "Accidental Shooting Last Monday a very serious accident occurred about four miles northeast of town which may result seriously. It appears the H. B. Romjue's little boy Tommy, had, last Saturday, found a revolver which his father had lost on the prairie, and keeping this fact hidden from his parents, had taken the weapon to school with him, and while he and the school boys were examining the revolver it was accidentally discharged, the ball taking effect o George W. Gilmore's little boy, who is about six years of age, striking him in the right eye directly over the eyeball, passing thence to near the top of the right ear, where the ball seemingly divided, one piece leaving the had about half an inch farther forward than the other, cutting a small piece off the ear when it left the wound. Dr. Franklin was called and dressed the wound. From him we learn that, although the wound may not prove fatal, yet it will require careful nursing and close attention to save the boy's life. Whatever the result of this sad affair, no blame can be found with Mr. or Mrs. Romjue, they having had no knowledge of the fact that the boy had found the revolver, neither had they ever permitted him to carry or handle so dangerous a weapon. It is simply a sad and terrible accident?liable to happen almost anytime among children, and against which parents cannot be too careful to guard. It is needless to say that Mr. and Mrs. Romjue are very much trouble about the affair, while the little boy in whose hands the revolver was at the time it was discharge will have learned a lesson never to be forgotten. Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore have the earnest sympathy of all parents, and from the heart of each a fervent prayer goes up to Him 'who holdeth the destiny of Nations in His hand,' for the recovery of the little sufferer, who has so early in life become the victim of a sad accident."

Of his many debauches and escapades while living here this whole paper could be filled and the half not then be told.\" -------------- \"The above tells the story of the manner in which Mr. Gilmore was badly wounded and may die. The story of his life while in this county would require much more space than we have to spare. As we stated at first, he came to this county at an early day in its history, settling on the farm now owned by Jas. Boddy, on Spring Creek. When sober, Gilmore was a good citizen with many commendable traits in his make-up, kindhearted, accommodating and gentlemanly. But it was while drinking that another nature seemed to take possession of him and he knew neither friend nor foe. All mankind was the same to him and he became a disagreeable, quarrelsome bully.\" ------------ \"In those days Vinegar bitters were extensively sold because they contained to alcohol. It has been told that George would buy a bottle of this when he could obtain nothing else, his imagination being so vivid that after taking a drink of this non-alcoholic beverage he would become at once to all intents and purposes, blind drunk.\" ------- \"Domestic difficulties finally came into his life and his first wife secured a divorce. She is still living, and for a number of years has been a permanent resident of the county farm. A short time after his wife secured the divorce, Gilmore married Mrs. Delia Jones, the divorced wife of David Jones. The woman had considerable property, and after a short time they moved to Rawlins county where she died a year or two ago. During the time he has lived out there but little has been heard of him, except that he seemed to be doing well and had reformed considerably in his ways. After his second wife\'s death, however, the old time spirit seemed to again take possession of him and the same paper which contained the clipping we have published also considered the following item: [item about being sued by Ballou for $10,000 for alienation of affections]. Being a man of strong physical build and a constitution of iron, even after the years of debauchery, it is barely possible that he may recover. Should he do so, the $10,000 damage suit, if successful, will not tend to make the balance of his life very pleasant.\"
    • Newspaper Article: 28 Jan 1897, Smith Centre, Smith County, Kansas, USA; From the Smith County Pioneer: \"More About Geo. Gilmore The following press dispatch from Atwood, Kansas in last Friday\'s daily papers, explains the mystery of the attempted assassination of George Gilmore. It is as follows: \'The arrest of Reuben Rinker of Bertrand, Neb., on suspicion of having attempted the assassination of George Gilmore of Beaver township, who was shot through a window several weeks ago and who has been in a precarious condition ever since, has probably solved the mystery of the crime. Gilmore\'s career has been remarkable. He was endowed with great strength, which made him terrible to his companions when he was drunk, which as often. At other times he was amiable enough. he came from somewhere in the east to Smith county and there induced Mrs. Delia Jones, who had some property, to secure a divorce from her husband and become Mrs. Gilmore. They removed to Beaver township in Rawlins county, and till his wife\'s death Gilmore led rather a respectable life. Gossip concerned itself with Gilmore\'s name and that of Mrs. Hunt, and Hunt secured a divorce, the woman being soon married to Gilmore. Hung moved to Bertrand, and Mrs. Gilmore used to visit him, members of the Hunt family also visited the Gilmores. Gilmore and wife quarreled and Mrs. Gilmore returned to Hunt. Mrs. J. A. Ballou was engaged by Gilmore as housekeeper, and Ballou sued Gilmore for $10,000 for alienation of affections. Then came the attempted assassination. Mrs. Ballou being with Gilmore at the time. A number of theories were advanced, one being that the shooting had been done by a woman Gilmore had wronged before coming to the state. The theory on which the arrest of Rinker was made rests of [sic] the circumstances that Rinker is a son-in-law of Mrs. Gilmore. When the woman left Hunt, who was respectable and prosperous, for Gilmore, a drunkard, considerable comment was occasioned by her apparent folly, but it now appears that Hunt and the woman had agreed to try to secure Gilmore\'s property, which was reputed to be considerable, and that the pair contemplated an ultimate reunion. The shooting is believed to have been an offshoot of the original conspiracy. Ringer was traced on the testimony of railroad men, with who he traveled, and he has been positively identified by Brakeman Cline as a man who left the vicinity of the crime with a shotgun the next morning.\' \"
    • NEWS: 29 Jan 1897, Goodland, Sherman County, Kansas, USA; "Some time ago George Gilmore of Rawlins county was shot while sitting in his house at the supper table. The shot wounded him seriously, but not fatally. Gilmore had wronged several women and at the time of the attempted assassination, was separated from his own wife and living with that of another man's. Recently Mrs. Hannah Gilmore, Gilmore's wife, was arrested on the charge of having been an accomplice in the attempted murder of her husband with her son-in-law, Reuben Rinker, now in jail under the charge of being principal in the crime. If Gilmore's reputation doesn't greatly belie him, the wife should command all the sympathy in the case."

To add to the confusion Adda was born in Nov 1858, while Etta (Matteson) Gilmore was born in Dec 1854 [1900 census], 1859 [1860 & 1870 & 1880 census], 1863 (1895 Kansas census), or 3 May 1858 (KY death cert). So the two women were close in age. Though a major coincidence, the two couples can be separated. The other George was Rev. George Washington Gilmore, b. 1843 KY, d 1924 in St. Louis, buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Marion Co IL [FindAGrave]. His wife was Adda B. Booth and they married 1878 Marion Co IL. Notarized transcription, typescript, of family birth data from the Thomas Gilmore Bible [no full title stated] (George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode, London, 1860, ?printers to the Queen?s most excellent majesty); George W. Gilmore (Pvt., Co H, 67th Illinois Inf., Civil War), pension application no. 835,258, certificate no. 602,065, Case Files of Approved Pension Applications?, 1861-1934; Civil War and Later Pension Files; Department of Veterans Affairs, Record Group 15, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Washington, D. C. The notarized transcription was dated 27 September 1907, and provided no information on the handwriting and incomplete publication data. Letters and testimony from Thomas Gilmore, Charles W. Gilmore, and Jane Ann (Gilmore) Hurlbert, the claimants? three siblings, all dated 1907, and all held in the pension file, provide additional information, including provenance. The family birth data was originally recorded by ThomasA Gilmore (father) in a Bible brought by the family to Canada from Ireland. The older Bible was damaged by salt water. ThomasA Gilmore (father) copied the birth data from the older Bible into the 1860 Bible in his own hand; of his ten children he copied only the names and birthdates of the seven who were living at the time that the family data was moved to the newer Bible. The loose Bible leaf was held in 1907 by Thomas2 Gilmore (Middleton, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada); it was sent to George W. Gilmore (West Plains, Howell County, Missouri) as proof of age for George?s pending application for an age-based military pension increase. The original leaf was returned to the family, and its present location is unknown.

    Birth:
For date of birth, family Bible record. For place of birth, various census cites Canada, while George's sister insisted that Thomas was the first child born in Canada, that George and his older siblings were all born in Ireland.

Message, Spring 2013, from Cathi Becker Wiest Desmairis, Certified Genealogist, via FaceBook:
"I looked at the Anglican church records available, and they start quite late in County Sligo, for the most part. I did some searching in the IFHF church record indexes and I didn't find anything early enough for your Gilmores. There were Thomases and Georges, but they were later than yours. I did find only ONE Thomas Gilmor in the tithe applotment records in County Sligo. He was listed in 1833, which makes the timing right for your Thomas who married prior to 1829. He lived in the Townland of Barnacoghil, in Parish Templeboy, County Sligo. This might be your husband's ancestor. This townland is very small and close to the ocean. Check Google maps. There is an 1839 Directory of the Towns of Sligo and others, but this might just be the major towns. It might be worth looking for that when you are there. The *best* Irish records are the landlords' estate records. The rent rolls that some of these contain are golden. There were Reid/Reed families in County Sligo also. Parish Toomour had both Gilmore and Reed families, which is significant. Kidney/Kidny/Kedney is a very unusual Irish name. Most of them came from County Cork. Perhaps she married in Canada. Given the early time period they left, their religion, and the fact that you've already consulted others, I don't know that I can add much more. Many of the Anglican records were destroyed in 1922. In Sligo the Catholic records are better. If you've exhausted everything on this side of the pond, including searching for the neighbors' Irish origins, then it would probably take some serious digging in any landlords records to hope to find anything. I did find that the name stems from Mac Giolla Mhir. Several of the Gilmore families in the tithe applotment records used the given name Gowan. That is a Scottish surname. When you are there, particularly in Parish Templeboy and Parish Toomour, don't be afraid to ask for local folks named Gilmore. Let me know if you decide to go to Doolin in County Clare and I will give you the B&B name. Cath"

    • RESEARCH: 1836, Belleville, Ontario, Canada; A George W. Gilmore, filed a land petition in Belleville, 1836. He was married to Elizabeth Watson, the daughter of Robert Watson. Robert was charged with murder and deeded, by gift, his land to his daughter Elizabeth and her husband George W. Gilmore. Robert Watson's son William was also charged for the same murder. Robert was convicted and hanged and William was found innocent. William claimed his father's land, based on the fact that his father thought they were both going to jail or death. George petitioned the courts to retain the land because it was legally deeded, he had maintained it, and he had borne much of the expense of their trials. He was allowed to keep the land. Could this George W. Gilmore be a brother to Thomas Gilmore? The name and the era make it possible. A long shot, but worth remembering. George's petition was found indexed online at Library and Archives Canada, searching the index "Land Petitions of Upper Canada, 1763-1865" for "Gilmor." The results reflected: Gilmore, George W., Belleville (place), 1836 (year), vol. 212, bundle G 19, petition no. 56, reference RG 1 L3, microfilm no. C-2035. • Immigration: 1840; Compiled evidence indicates the family came between 1839 (Maria's birth in Ireland) and 1842 (Thomas's birth in Canada). Additionally, the Cairns book (Roy Cairns, history of the Cairns family, including Samuel Cairns and wife Maria Gilmour), states that Maria immigrated with her family when she was 9 months old and the journey took 9 weeks. Since she was born in August 1839, that puts their date of immigration at roughly May-June 1841. They seem to have left County Sligo when it was at its peak, before the Great Famine of 1845-1847. The population of the county peaked in 1841 at 181,000. By 1851, due to the Famine, population had dropped to 50,000. Often, origins can be determined by family religion. The Presbyterians were usual former Scots, while other protestants were generally of English descent. Native Irish and Normans were usually Catholic. Sligo has always been primarily agricultural, though it was also an important port in the 1700s and 1800s.

Today it is no longer an individual municipality, but is part of the amalgamated city of Toronto. Records available for Scarborough are later than the known residence of the Gilmore family:

"Hi Janis, I think my DNA connection with your husband would be back around Sligo, Roscommon, or Mayo. My paternal great grandparents were all from Roscommon. My paternal grandmother's parents James Elwood, b. 1807 & Mary Beirne, b. 1812 were from around Croghan, Co. Roscommon. My paternal grandfather's parents were Thomas Plunkett, b. abt 1818 and Elizabeth McDermottroe, b. abt. 1820. They were married in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, however at the time of their marriage in 1841 the Mayo / Roscommon went through Ballaghaderreen, and Sligo is only a mile or two away. Elizabeth McDermott(roe)'s mother was a Elizabeth Costello, b. abt. 1800, thought to be from Sligo. I think all my great-grandparents emigrated in the 1840s, except for Elizabeth McDermottroe Plunkett. Her four children were born during the famine, 1842-1849, and according to my grandfather's obit, they emigrated after his father died in Ireland, when my grandfather was about 9 yrs. (1856). They went to the area around Downie, Perth Co., Ontario in the mid 1850s, to join Elizabeth's McDermott family. By 1870 my ggrandmother must have died in Canada and the four children moved to Iowa. Here is what I found checking genomes, I also checked them with my brother John and nephew Christopher: Comparison Half IBD # segments George Calvin Gilmore vs. Denise Plunkett 41 cM 1 (We matched on chromosome # 1) George Calvin Gilmore vs. John Plunkett 0 cM 0 George Calvin Gilmore vs. Christopher Plunkett 0 cM 0 _______________________ Janis, you sound very knowledgable about genetic genealogy. Last week someone I matched with gave me the name of a book: Genetic Genealogy by Mary Aulicino. I ordered it from Amazon, it is very recent, compares the companies 23 & Me, FTDNA and Ancestry, I joined all three around December. I hope I can get a better understanding of the basics! Note on the transcription website:
"From medieval times it was required that notification of intention to marriage be given on three consecutive Sundays in church (called publishing the banns). But, as an alternative, members of the Church of Ireland could take out a Marriage Licence Bond. The parties lodged an amount of money with the Diocese to indemnify the Church against there being an obstacle to the marriage. This marriage by licence provided privacy, and was faster than the time taken to read the banns. It was considered more prestigious than having the banns read. The bonds themselves were destroyed in the Fires of 1922, but the indexes remain in the National Archives of Ireland. After 1845 marriages were registered by the State, and are available to researchers. This diocese is in Co. Mayo and Co. Sligo."

    • Land: 30 Nov 1868, Josiah Pratt property, Macon County, Illinois, USA; SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 2, Township 18N, Range 3E, 3rd principal meridian. 40 acres. Notes:

    Birth:
Age in 1850 census appears to be 30, but may be 36, which would again come out to approximately 1814 for birth. 1850 census gives Canada as his birthplace, while the 1860 gives New York. 1855 census also gives Canada as his birthplace. It seems likely that the earlier census is correct on this point.

DJ Brannan document states that he was probably born in Brome, Lower Canada, abt 1820
