Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Hallie Wright was born on 11 Mar 1890 in Arkansas, USA (daughter of William Y. Wright and Bettie Walker Atkinson); died on 4 May 1942 in San Francisco County, California, USA.

    Other Events:

    • Parents:
      Hallie's death index (from death cert) names her father as "Wright" and her mother as "Ledbetter." The latter is an understandable error, as her mother was born Bettie Atkinson, but Bettie's mother Mary Jane Adams was first married to an Atkinson (Bettie's father) and second to a Ledbetter.
    • Census: 12 Jan 1920, 3316 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, USA;
      1. O'Rourke, A. L. head, renting, female, white, 28, widowed, can read and write, Arkansas, Arkansas, Arkansas, keeper, boarding house, own account 2. Wright, Bettie, mother, female, white, 62, widowed, can read and write, Arkansas, Alabama, Arkansas, no occupation 3-19. [Boarders with no apparent relationship] [It is not clear why Hallie (Wright) O'Rourke is listed as A. L. O'Rourke?her deceased husband's name. Possibly her name was given as "Mrs. A. L. O'Rourke" and incorrectly transcribed later]
    • Residence: Feb 1930, San Francisco County, California, USA;
      Her mother's obituary places "Mrs. Ray Jacobs" in San Francisco.
    • Census: 8 Apr 1930, 1000 Holloway St., San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, USA;
      1. Jacobs, Ray G., head, owns, value $16,000, has radio set, not a farm, male, white, 45, married, first married age 36, can read and write, California, Germany, Germany, manager, machinery 2. _____, Hattie W., wife, female, white, 39, married, first married age 30, can read and write, Arkansas, Arkansas, Arkansas 3. Tinney, Johana, servant, female, negro, [age unknown], can read and write, Tennessee, Virginia, Tennessee, servant, private family
    • Voter's Registration: 1932, 1000 Holloway Ave., San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, USA;
      "Jacobs, Mrs. Hallie W., 1000 Holloway Ave., Dem" and "Jacobs, Ray G., 1000 Holloway Ave., Dem."
    • Voter's Registration: 1934, 208 Rose Avenue, Mill Valley, Marin County, California, USA;
      "Mrs. Hallie W. Jacobs" (housewife) and "Mr. Ray G. Jacobs" (manufacturers agent), both of 208 Rose Ave.

    Notes:

    Name:
    In the 1900 census her name appears to be "Panis."
    In the 1920 census, it seems likely that she is the "A. L. O'Rourke" listed as head of household for a boarding house in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, as Bettie Wright is listed as "mother."
    Bettie Wright's 1930 obituary names among her children "Mrs. Ray Jacobs, of San Francisco." A search of 1930 census for San Francisco County reveals a Ray G. Jacobs married to Hattie--born about 1890 in Arkansas.
    However, voter's registration and her death registration name her as "Hallie W."

    Birth:
    Hallie's age is 10 in the 1900 census, but 28 in the 1920 census, calculating to a birth year of 1890-1892. Her death certificate, however, gave her birthdate as 11 March 1893.

    It is likely that the day was 11 March (agreeing with the 1900 census which gave her birth month as March), but she was probably born in 1890.

    Hallie married Albert Louis O'Rourke in 1914 in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, USA. Albert was born about 1890 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, USA; died on 27 Oct 1918. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Hallie married Ray G. Jacobs about 1921. Ray was born about 1885 in California, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  William Y. Wright was born in Mar 1846 in Georgia, USA; died between 1900-1910.

    Notes:

    Birth:
    In the 1900 census his birth state was listed as Alabama.

    Died:
    Wife Bettie was found in 1900 census with him, but was listed in 1910 as a widow.

    William married Bettie Walker Atkinson on 6 Nov 1872 in Bradley County, Arkansas, USA. Bettie (daughter of Thomas A. Atkinson and Mary J. Adams) was born in Jan 1857 in Dallas County, Arkansas, USA; died on 8 Feb 1930 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, USA; was buried in Methodist Cemetery, Pineville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, USA. • RESEARCH:
      Some researchers seem to believe that the M. J. Atkinson buried at Curry Family Cemetery in Curry County, Arkansas, is the subject individual. However, this seems unlikely. The woman buried in Curry Family Cemetery was born in 1855 and died in 1879. The subject Mary J. (Adams) Atkinson Ledbetter was born around 1838, according to other sources and all indications are that she lived longer than 1879. Additionally, there is a Mary J. Atkinson Ledbetter buried at Watson Gum Grove Cemetery in Cleveland County, Arkansas, whose birth date matches that of Mary J. Adams. And John R. Ledbetter is buried in the same cemetery.
    • Note: 1850, Dallas County, Arkansas, USA;
      Mary J. Adams married Thomas Atkinson, who appears on the same page of 1850 census, in Saline township, Dallas County, with his father Thomas Atkinson. The 1850 slave schedules reflects that Thomas Atkinson owned 20 slaves, ages 37 down to 6 months.

However: 1. Her name is Mary 2. She was born in TN 3. She is born Nov 1838, calculating to about the right birth year to be the same person as Mary (Adams) Atkinson. 4. They have been married 34 years, calculating to 1866--the year that Mary (Adams) Atkinson married John Ledbetter. 5. The death certificate of Bettie Atkinson, Mary's daughter, names her mother as "Tom Adkinson" and "Mary Adams." Bettie's obituary names among her brothers "Mr. C. E. Ledbetter" of "Kingland, Arkansas." (Charley actually lived in Kingsland, Cleveland County, Arkansas.) Conflicts: 1. Her mother was born in GA, while the census record states her mother was born in TN. We don't know who supplied the info--and her mother was _from_ Tennessee. It seems likely that this is Mary J. (Adams) Atkinson Ledbetter.
    • Obituary: 24 Oct 1901, Rison, Cleveland County, Arkansas, USA;
      Appearing in the Cleveland County Herald
      "Mrs J. R. Ledbetter We are sorry to learn that Mrs J. R. Ledbetter died at her home near Kingsland Monday. Mr. Ledbetter an his family have our sympathy in this, their sad bereavement."

    Notes:

    Birth:
    Age 17 at the time of her March 1854 marriage to Thomas Atkinson.

    Info from descendant Mary Lee Shelton gives her birth in July 1838. The 1900 census gives her birth as November 1838.

    Died:
    This death date was established from the 24 October 1901 notice in the Cleveland County Herald stating that Mrs J. R. Ledbetter had died on Monday. The previous Monday would be 21 October 1901.

    Children:
    1. 3. Bettie Walker Atkinson was born in Jan 1857 in Dallas County, Arkansas, USA; died on 8 Feb 1930 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, USA; was buried in Methodist Cemetery, Pineville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, USA.

Generation: 4

  1. 14.  Thomas Adams was born about 1803 in Virginia, USA (son of Sylvester Adams and Rebecca Boyd); died on 2 Nov 1859 in Arkansas, USA.

    Thomas married Retha Walker between 1823-1850. Retha (daughter of (Progenitor) Walker and Elizabeth (--?--)) was born about 1799 in Georgia, USA; died after 1850. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 15.  Retha Walker was born about 1799 in Georgia, USA (daughter of (Progenitor) Walker and Elizabeth (--?--)); died after 1850.

    Other Events:

    • DNA - Walker Surname Study:
      John Porter McMeans (descenand of Joseph H. Walker) matches a Mrs. Mary Lee Shelton, who appears to be a descendant of Ritha Walker and Thomas Adams through daughter Mary J. Adams, who married Thomas A. Atkinson. See FTDNA.
    • Possible Census: 1820, Humphreys County, Tennessee, USA;
      George Turner household 1 male under 10 1 male of 10 and under 16 1 male of 26 and under 45 1 female under 10 1 female of 10 and under 16 1 female of 26 and under 45 2 persons engaged in agriculture 0 slaves, etc. George Turner was enumerated next to Samuel A. Walker in 1820--possible indication that George was Ritha Walker's Turner husband (named as "Retha Turner" in 1823 deed of gifts from Elizabeth Walker to Elijah Walker. Conflict: Ritha, according to 1850 census, was born in 1799. Might she have been born earlier? Wrong husband?
    • Deed: 29 Jan 1823, Dickson County, Tennessee, USA;
      Deed of Gifts from Elizabeth Walker to Elijah Walker, giving him a slave girl named Ailee. The deed specifies that offspring of the slave are to be given to his sisters, Elizabeth Heartly, Polly Bazzell [Brazzell], and Ritha Turner. The deed is witnessed by George H. Brazzell. This deed is important evidence of relationships, specifying that Elijah is the son of Elizabeth Walker, that Elizabeth, Polly, and Ritha, are his sisters, and that George H., also her "beloved son" is his brother. It is also evidence of who the three named girls married. On the same date, Elizabeth Walker also made a Deed of Gifts to her son, George H., leaving him a slave boy. Elijah Walker witnessed this deed.
    • Possible Census: 1840, Hardeman County, Tennessee, USA;
      Thomas Adams household 1 male under 5 [William T., abt 6?] 1 male of 10 and under 15 1 male of 30 and under 40 [possibly Thomas, abt 37] 1 female under 5 1 female of 5 and under 10 [Susan Adams, abt 7] 1 female of 10 and under 15 2 females of 15 and under 20 1 female of 40 and under 50 [possibly Ritha, about 41]
    • HISTORICAL: 1845;
      Dallas County created from Clark County
    • Note: 1823-1850;
      Nothing is known of Ritha in this period. She is probably the Ritha Adams located in the 1850 Dallas County, Arkansas, census enumeration (see below). From it, we can infer that her first husband (Turner) probably died prior to 1833, and it is even possible that he was not living in 1823 when she was named as "Ritha Turner" in the gift of deeds. If the children in the 1850 household are Ritha's children, then she probably married Thomas Adams in Tennessee, before 1833 (the year of Susan's birth). It is possible that Thomas and Ritha had older children, and the marriage was earlier. It is also possible that these are the children of Thomas Adams from a first marriage.
    • Census: 15 Oct 1850, Saline township, Dallas County, Arkansas, USA;
      1. Thos. Adams, 47, male, farmer, Virginia 2. _____, Ritha, 51, female, Georgia 3. _____, Susan [J.?], 17, female, Tennessee 4._____, William T., 16, male, Tennessee 5. _____, Martha E., 9, female, Tennessee While the evidence is slim, these factors support the possibility that this is Ritha (Walker) Turner:
      • Her age, 51 (born about 1799)
      • Birthplace of Georgia, consistent with Walker siblings
      • Children's birth in Tennessee, indicating previous residence in that state
      • Arkansas was a common migrational path from Tennessee
      • "Ritha," while not totally unique as a name, is at list reasonably uncommon (as opposed, for instance, to "Mary"
      All of these factors taken together tend to support the likelihood that this is, indeed, the Ritha (Walker) Turner from Dickson County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

    A search of Tennessee marriages (Ancestry.com) has failed to locate the marriage of a Thomas Adams to a "Turner" or "R*th*" or to any name that might appear to be "Ritha" --excepting Ruth. None of the locations and dates seemed likely to be the right person.

    Arkansas marriage databases on FamilySearch were also search with varying search terms, with no success.

    William T. Adams (son of the 1850 household) is still in Dallas County in 1880.

    Ritha and Thomas Adams are both absent from the 1860 Dallas County census, nor have they been located elsewhere. They may have both died between 1850 and 1860.

    FamilySearch has Arkansas county probate books. Am searching Dallas Co, Probate Records 1845-1860, vol A-B, got up to page p 311, image 187, searching for Thomas Adams (Jan Term 1853). No Adams yet.

    Notes:

    Married:
    Ritha was "Ritha Turner" in 1823. She could have married Thomas Adams any time after that date and prior to the enumeration in 1850 Dallas County, Arkansas.

    If Thomas's children in the 1850 census were also Ritha's children, they were probably married prior to 1833, and they could have had an older child, as well.

    The family group sheet prepared by Esther Pratt has a notation that appears to indicate Retha's marriage to Thomas Adams in Humphreys County, in 1843. If this is the case, the children were Thomas's by a previous marriage.

    Children:
    1. Susan Adams was born about 1833 in Tennessee, USA; and died.
    2. William T. Adams was born on 10 Aug 1834 in Tennessee, USA; died on 19 Dec 1882; was buried in Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Dallas County, Arkansas, USA.
