    • Obituary: 16 May 2007, Merced County, California, USA; \"Mary (Mae) Vurla Cochran was born December 3, 1910 in Rosie, Arkansas to Franklin and Mary Starnes. She married and lived a rural farm life in Oklahoma and Texas before moving to Merced just before the outbreak of World War II. She worked in the Oakland shipyards during the war. She worked many subsequent years as a waitress. She was a poet and songwriter. Without a doubt the most important thing in Mae\'s life was her relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She served many years as Sunday School teacher, youth leader, choir member, and church board member. One of her last ministries was conducting regular worship services at local convalescent hospitals before she herself became a resident at La Sierra. She was preceded in death by brothers Raymond, Bill, Paul, and John Starnes and sisters Eulaela Haskins and Vola Cook. She is survived by her sister Joyce DeBoard of Merced, daughter Dorothy Harvey of Merced, son William Barefield of Bellvue, Washington, four grandchildren (William and David Barefield and Joyce Henke and Dixie Sweigard), and nine great grandchildren. Mae passed away peacefully May 14, 2007. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., May 26, 2006 at First Assembly of God, 1320 Yosemite Parkway, Merced. Arrangements are under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home. Published in Merced Sun Star on May 16, 2007\"
