    • Obituary: 11 Feb 2000, Modesto, Stanislaus County, California, USA; From the Modesto Bee: "Custom-home builder Joe Tidwell dies at age 84 *His work covered a wide area as Modesto extended northward by Jeff Jardine (Bee Staff Writer) [Joe Henry Tidwell, who built custom homes in Modesto [California] for nearly three decades, died Tuesday (February 8, 2000) at Guardian Rehabilitation Hospital. #He was 84. #Mr. Tidwell, born Sept. 26, 1915, in Pulaski, Tenn., moved to Modesto in 1944 and soon entered the Army for the final part of World War II. #He received his contractor's license in 1950 and built his first home on Trask Lane in the El Vista area. #It sold for $6,800. He built 400 more custom homes over the next 27 years. #With partners Al Flory and Jim Johnston, Mr. Tidwell developed much of the area between Rumble Road and Standiford Avenue and Tully Road and McHenry Avenue. Their homes featured hand-made cabinets and tongue-and-groove floors said grandson Greg Tidwell. #Mr. Tidwell also developed subdivisions known as North Star Estates, Greenwood Estates and North Hampton Parks I and II, and built his own home in the North Hampton Parks area. #He retired in 1977 during the building of North Hampton Phase III, which is north of Sylvan Avenue between Rexford Drive and Coffee Road. #Throughout much of his career, his three sons worked alongside him. Sons Charles and Edward Tidwell are still involved in custom-home construction. Son Joe D. Tidwell specialized in masonry and later began his own company, Tidwell Enterprises. #Mr. Tidwell was a 40-year member of the Old Fishermen's Club and an avid trapshooter who belonged to the Escalon Gun Club. #He helped build the Free Methodist Church at Rose and Briggsmore avenues and was among the original members. #Mr. Tidwell is survived by his sons, all of Modesto; wife, Dorothy Selander Tidwell of Modesto; stepchildren, Gloria Short and David Crator, both of Modesto, and Mark Crator of Ceres; brothers, Jimmy Tidwell and Sam Tidwell, both of Pulaski (Tenn.); sisters, Liz Davis and Mable Brown, both of Pulaski (Tenn.), Louise Michalik of Missouri (sic; wrong, should be Mountain Home, Arkansas) and Lillian Ursiny of Roseville (Calif.); and 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. #A funeral will be at noon Saturday at the Free Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson (Calif). Tidwell died at his home in the Chicken Creek locality Monday, in the 77th year of his age. He had been in failing health for the past year. The burial was at Mt. Moriah Tuesday, Rev. Bease conducting services. Mr. Tidwell was one of our best and most substantial citizens. He was a member of the Methodist church nearly all his life, and the Masonic lodge, and was one of the survivors of the War between the States, having faithfully served in the Confederate army. Mr. Tidwell was the father of our fellow townsman Wesley Tidwell and of Frank Tidwell and Mrs. [Malinda] Zigler. He has three brothers, James of Giles county, Jim, [sic, should be Will] of Lawrence county and Tom, of Hardin County. He is survived by his second wife. [and their children, Mrs. Emma Gower, Sam H.
