    • Letter: 16 Sep 1901, Davenport township, Lincoln County, Oklahoma, USA; Letter from Snoden to his brother Retus: "Davenport, Okla Sept 16, 1901 Retus, Dear Brother, It is with the greatest of satisfaction that I write you. I feel so lonesome this Sunday evening to think that you have always been with me so much and now I never see or hardly ever hear from you. I haven?t heard anything of you since you wrote me sometime before I left home. Sometimes I almost think you have forgotten or forsaken me. I think of you every day and of my life and I hope we will have a chance to live close together and if we are not permitted that privilege, I trust that we will live so that we will meet in a better country, where there will be no parting. I never get lonesome when some of you boys are with me, but I do get lonesome when I am alone. I do wish I could have seen Adren. Looks like he could have come home before I left. I trust that he is getting along both financially and spiritually alright. Tell them that I would like to see them awful well. Also tell Will and Hettie that I would love to see them and that I think they might write me. But don?t suppose that Hettie ever thinks of me. Retus, I like Okla alright as far as making a living is concerned. We made $8.35 in 4 days last week, then it was too hot to work steady. Not 80 yards from where I am sitting is a big patch of as fine watermelons as I ever saw, and get all we want without paying a cent. Wish you had some everytime I eat one ? John is working for Fatty Robbison at 15 per month. He likes this country better than he expected and thinks that he will stay here. Aley has been in bed ever since [we?] have been here, but I think she is mending and will be up before long. They have a good deal of corn here and lots of fodder and prairie hay and different kind of weed. Wish you was here next summer to make a crop with me. Think I will buy a team and rent next summer. Will send you a letter I got from Marciller . Retus, I want you to write me all the news. Your brother, S. S. Debord"
    • Letter: 8 Dec 1901, Davenport township, Lincoln County, Oklahoma, USA; Letter from Snoden to his brother Adrian: "Davenport, Okla Dec 8, 1901 A.L., Dear brother, I got your letter a day or two ago. I was awful glad to get one from you, was proud to hear that you was all well and enjoying life, for that is all there is in life to enjoy. We are not well. Cora is not well, and hasn?t been for a good while. Floyd has been very poorly for six weeks. He looks awful bad. I have been poorly for a week with my stomach and bowels, but I am mending a little the last day or two. Was able to come down to father?s last night. Haven?t went home yet. I like [OT?] very well and would stay a year or two but I am afraid I could not have our health. I believe I could make a little here if we could have our health, but afraid to risk it and we cannot work on public works. So I don?t know what more to do than go back to MO, which we will do this week if nothing happens. We have made about one hundred dollars this fall and can only land back in MO with about $100. I hate to go back, but don?t know what else to do, I wish you had some way to make a living in Misouri and could see your way clear to come back I would like to live close to you. Bud only has one bail to pick out yet he won?t have more that $25 when he is squared up. If I was you, when I left there I would pick out a place and try to stay with it, for I find nothing in moving around. It?s broke me up of what life I had. I must close. Write. Give Lou and the children my love and respects. Your brother S.S.Deboard"

    Obituary:
    Obituary, Joel Franklin DeBoard
    From the Mountain View Standard

    August 15, 1919

REV. J. FRANKLIN DEBOARD - Uncle J. Franklin Deboard was born in White county, Illinois, July 13, 1836, and died June 15, 1919. He toiled along in this old troublesome world for 83 years, 11 months, and 2 days. He was wonderfully saved at the age of 16, and united with the M.E. church. He united in marriage August 26, 1858, to Margaret A. McKinsey, who was a faithful wife and helpmate, being converted to Jesus Christ in her 15th year. She still waits and mourns his departure. To this union were born thirteen children, seven girls and six boys. Five boys and two girls still are waiting their departure when they shall join their father and loved ones who have crossed on over the tide. Two girls, Mrs. J.H. Goodman and Mrs. W.L. Beard, and S.S. Deboard, live north of Chandler, Okla., and two boys, A.L. and R.H. Deboard, and two other sons, A.E. and L.L. Deboard, still live near Mountain View. Rev. Deboard was licensed to preach in the M.E. Church in 1860. He volunteered in the union army in August, 1861, and made a good soldier for three years, being honorably discharged in August, 1864. He left Illinois and came to Howell county in 1876, where he lived until his death. Shortly after arriving in Missouri he united with the Congregational church and was ordained to preach. 'Uncle Franklin' as he was called, was not a great preacher as some call great, but was one in whom everyone had confidence. He was always on hand at preaching services, prayer meetings, and Sunday school to do what he could for the Lord and the church. He was not only a preacher, but was one of the best Sunday school class leaders in the church. He was present to marry young people and also to bury the dead. 'Uncle Franklin' was well known and loved by both young and old. Especially was he loved by the host of grand-children, there being thirty-seven grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. Truly it was a shock, and we are grieved to lose him as husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and church worker. But our loss is his gain, so we say 'Amen' to the Father of Lights who doeth all things well. His grandson, Rev. Franklin N. Deboard.

    • Note: The Eldora Cemetery has a stone for an S. B. Cunningham, who may or may not have been related to James Cunningham. No dates are offered on his stone, but his entry on FindAGrave offers the transcription of his biography in the 1883 History of Hardin County states that he was born in Pennsylvania to Samuel A. Cunningham and Julia A. Boyd, both natives of Maryland. The bio indicates that Julia A. (Boyd) Cunningham died at age 58 in Maryland, and Samuel A. Cunningham died in Indiana at age 98. James Cunningham's som William H. in the 1900 census indicates that his father was born in Maryland and his mother in Pennsylvania. Could these have been among the family members of James Cunningham?

(Research):A homestead file for a James Cunningham of St. Joseph Indiana exists. The land office was Fort Wayne, and the legal description "North half of the Northeast quarter of Section 15, Township 35, Range 7." Dated 24 April 1837. Containing 80 acres. Patented 20 Aug 1828. File no. 19051.

It is not clear whether or not this is our James Cunningham.

James married Martha Hayden on 13 Apr 1835 in Elkhart County, Indiana, USA. Martha (daughter of Zerah Hayden and Martha McClure) was born about 1812 in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; died on 30 Dec 1874. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 15.  Martha Hayden was born about 1812 in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (daughter of Zerah Hayden and Martha McClure); died on 30 Dec 1874.

    Notes:

Had an "Aunt Jane Hammon" (or HAMMOND?)

    Notes:

    Married:
Who is Sarah Cunningham, age 59, in the home of James in the 1870 census? Could it be Martha? The letter from her son indicates Martha's death in 1878. Could they have divorced and James remarried? Could it be an error on the part of the census enumerator?

George Hayden's letter to his niece Emeline Cunningham regarding her inheritance (dated 25 June 1878, from Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa), stated that the deceased "Aunt Jane Hammon" had left one-third of her estate to "the heirs of your grandmother." He went on to say "as your mother is now dead, you will be heir to one-sixth of one-fifth. . . . "

This makes it clear that in 1878 there were 6 living children of Martha (Hayden) Cunningham.
