    • NEWS: 19 Jun 1925, Laclede County, Missouri, USA; The Laclede County Republican: "Mrs. W. P. Owen [contributed] Friends and relatives of Mrs. W. P. Owen were deeply saddened by her death which came last Sunday afternoon as a result of an attack of influenza, which she suffered last winter, when her system weakened, becoming susceptible to infection which produced her death. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. W. Gadd, assisted by Rev. C. W. Wood, Rev. R. B. Carnett and Rev. D. F. Adams. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery. Martha Wood was born on December 26, 1855, in Warren county, Kentucky. She, with her parents, moved to Missouri in 1857, locating in this neighborhood in which she has spent her life. She was converted at the age of 28 years and united with this church in which she has spent a long faithful Christian life. She was a type of true Christian womanhood, upright in every respect. She taught in the Sunday school here since it organized. The majority of her pupils have become Christians which very probably is a result, in part at least, of her faithful and persistent service. And Martha, as she was called, was kind to all with whom she came into contact. Not only so, but was firm and unvacillating in her conviction of right. To know her was to be impressed by her conscientious devotion to her Lorda and her church. On March 14, 1878, she was united in marriage to Mr. W. P. Owen, who survives her. Her parents and a sister, Miss Alice Wood, have preceded her into eternity, where, as we believe, they welcome her saintly spirit. She is also survived by a sister, Miss Jane Wood, of Oakland, and five brothers: Messrs. Charles, Walter and Thomas, all of Oakland, and Frank and Ellis Wood of Lebanon. Also a group of nieces and nephews mourn her departure. Although she had no children of her own, she did a faithful part in rearing three foster sons. They are: herman Zoethen, of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; Clarence Oughletree and Sam Own, all of whom were present at the funeral. These three stalwart men honored her as a son does a mother. "She hath done what she could, and the summons has come." Sister Owen will be greatly missed but our loss is Heaven's gain. "So He giveth His beloved sleep."
