    • Affidavit: 18 Feb 1907, Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan, USA; Deposition of Charles Gilmore for pension file of brother George W. Gilmore:
"I am sixty years old. I was 60 on the 11th last August. I was born in 1846. I am a saw-filer. I reside at #132 Prentiss St. Alpena Mich. I am a brother of George W. Gilmore who lives at West Plains, Mo. I was out to visit him last Christmas. I visited him a little over three weeks. I left them two or three days. after Christmas. I had not seen him before in 39 or 40 years. For 15 or 16 years I had lost entire track of him. My parents are Thomas and Maria Gilmore born in the north of Ireland. I do not know when my father and mother came to America, but it was before I was born and before George was born. I had one brother and one sister born in Ireland but they are now both dead. There were ten of us children, and George is the oldest living one. I do not remember whether brother Tom or sister Jane Ann Hulburt is most in age to George. Thomas Gilmore gets his mail at Middleton Center Ontario. Here is a recent letter from him showing his address South Middleton, Ontario. He lives in the country on a farm. Mrs. Jane Ann Hulbert, wife of John Hulbert, forman in Stove-foundry, lives at Brantford, Ontario. I think when my parents came to America they settled in Canada, after that they went to some place in N.Y. state near Pekin. I was small when they moved there and small when they moved back. Father was a farmer and moved around a good deal. I do not remember when George was born. He is nearly ten years older than me. There was about two years and four months difference between the ages of us children, and Tom and Jane Ann are born between George and me, and Maria, too. Father died in Norwich tp, Oxford Co. Ontario, three miles from Otterville and he died a good many years ago; and mother died before he did. When George was 16 or 17 years old he left home and went to N.Y. State, and he never came home again but once, soon after the war, and visited us about four weeks. If George says he was born in Canada it must be so. I can?t remember ever living in Toronto but it seems to me that my aunt, Mrs ?? Kidney ? father?s sister used to speak of my father having lived in Toronto. My parents were Episcopalian and good church members, and if George was born in Toronto he must have been christened in an Episcopal church. Afterwards my parents when living at Norrige (not Norrwich) joined the Methodist Church. There was no Episcopal church near them. I last left home in 1869, and have lived in Michigan ever since. From memory I cannot give the date of birth of any of my brothers or sisters; but I am certain George is a good deal older than me. I lived with him a year and a half in Ills. in 1867 and 1868. I have always understood that I was born August 11th 1846; and I can remember seeing my birth set down in the bible. Brother George wrote to me some time ago and wanted to know about his age. He wanted to know if I could make an affidavit as to his age. I told him I couldn?t make and affidavit as to his age but that I would write to Tom and learn what the family said. I wrote to Tom and he sent me a record of all our births written on a bible leaf. I forwarded the leaf to George. I identify that leaf of a bible you hand me as the one I received from brother Tom and then sent to George. I am positive that record of births is in the handwriting of my father. There is no question of its genuineness. I will say that I think my father had another and older bible than this one from which this leaf was taken. It seems to me the older bible was bigger, and I have heard my father tell that it was dropped in salt water, but recovered. I know the cover was all off of it. That may have been a copy my father made for one of his children; and on the other hand, I can?t positively swear that leaf is not the original bible record. But I am absolutely certain the writing on that leaf is my father?s writing. I think my brother Tom can tell whether it is a leaf from the original bible or not; and so can sister Jane. I think tom had the bible this leaf was taken from in his custody after father died. I am not interested. I have heard this deposition read in full and understood your questions and my answers are correctly recorded herein. Sheet 1, line 16 interlined before signing. C. W. Gilmore"

    Notes:

    Name:
Seen on his 1904 marriage record as "Wallis C. Gilmor." Probably actually "Wallace," even greater suggestion that the Pratt family could have been related to the Gilmore family, since they had a son named Wallace and were from upstate New York.

    Birth:
The Charles W. Gilmore who married Kate Eva Lovelock stated his birthplace on the marriage record as Brantford, Ontario. Brantford wasn't incorporated until 1847, so it may be presumed that the family lived in the area in 1846. Brant County was not created until 1851, from Wentworth and Oxford, so Brantford was probably formerly in Oxford Co.

    Died:
May have died 13 May 1911 of a prostate abscess, Burton township, Genesee County, Michigan. (See citation.)

    Supporting:
Name, Charles Gillmore (known alternate spelling)
    Born, Canada
Occupation, saw filer (Charles was employed in this profession)

    Conflicting:
Age "about 55"--Charles would have been more like 65, but the informant may not have known him well (he didn't know his parents' names--basically knew only where he was born.

Death cert says he was "widowed." Esther Gilmore, his second wife, is found living with her son Albert Morrison in Alpena Co in 1910. While she may have died, they may have simply been separated. Her marital status in 1910 was married, but it indicated a first marriage, when clearly she was married to a man named Morrison previous to her marriage to Charles.

Charles married Catherine Eva "Kate" Lovelock on 27 Aug 1871 in Saginaw County, Michigan, USA. Catherine (daughter of William Lovelock and Harriet Springer) was born on 14 Oct 1856 in Michigan, USA; died on 8 Oct 1927 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. Harriet M. Gilmore was born on 2 Aug 1873 in Evert, Michigan, USA; died on 23 Apr 1935 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, USA.
    2. Ara Dell Gilmore was born in Jun 1876 in Michigan, USA; died on 17 Jul 1942 in Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan, USA.

Charles married Esther Morrison on 1 Mar 1904 in Harrisville, Alcona County, Michigan, USA. Esther was born in 1859 in Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Message, Spring 2013, from Cathi Becker Wiest Desmairis, Certified Genealogist, via FaceBook:
"I looked at the Anglican church records available, and they start quite late in County Sligo, for the most part. I did some searching in the IFHF church record indexes and I didn't find anything early enough for your Gilmores. There were Thomases and Georges, but they were later than yours. I did find only ONE Thomas Gilmor in the tithe applotment records in County Sligo. He was listed in 1833, which makes the timing right for your Thomas who married prior to 1829. He lived in the Townland of Barnacoghil, in Parish Templeboy, County Sligo. This might be your husband's ancestor. This townland is very small and close to the ocean. Check Google maps. There is an 1839 Directory of the Towns of Sligo and others, but this might just be the major towns. It might be worth looking for that when you are there. The *best* Irish records are the landlords' estate records. The rent rolls that some of these contain are golden. There were Reid/Reed families in County Sligo also. Parish Toomour had both Gilmore and Reed families, which is significant. Kidney/Kidny/Kedney is a very unusual Irish name. Most of them came from County Cork. Perhaps she married in Canada. Given the early time period they left, their religion, and the fact that you've already consulted others, I don't know that I can add much more. Many of the Anglican records were destroyed in 1922. In Sligo the Catholic records are better. If you've exhausted everything on this side of the pond, including searching for the neighbors' Irish origins, then it would probably take some serious digging in any landlords records to hope to find anything. I did find that the name stems from Mac Giolla Mhir. Several of the Gilmore families in the tithe applotment records used the given name Gowan. That is a Scottish surname. When you are there, particularly in Parish Templeboy and Parish Toomour, don't be afraid to ask for local folks named Gilmore. Let me know if you decide to go to Doolin in County Clare and I will give you the B&B name. Cath"

    • RESEARCH: 1836, Belleville, Ontario, Canada; A George W. Gilmore, filed a land petition in Belleville, 1836. He was married to Elizabeth Watson, the daughter of Robert Watson. Robert was charged with murder and deeded, by gift, his land to his daughter Elizabeth and her husband George W. Gilmore. Robert Watson's son William was also charged for the same murder. Robert was convicted and hanged and William was found innocent. William claimed his father's land, based on the fact that his father thought they were both going to jail or death. George petitioned the courts to retain the land because it was legally deeded, he had maintained it, and he had borne much of the expense of their trials. He was allowed to keep the land. Could this George W. Gilmore be a brother to Thomas Gilmore? The name and the era make it possible. A long shot, but worth remembering. George's petition was found indexed online at Library and Archives Canada, searching the index "Land Petitions of Upper Canada, 1763-1865" for "Gilmor." The results reflected: Gilmore, George W., Belleville (place), 1836 (year), vol. 212, bundle G 19, petition no. 56, reference RG 1 L3, microfilm no. C-2035. • Immigration: 1840; Compiled evidence indicates the family came between 1839 (Maria's birth in Ireland) and 1842 (Thomas's birth in Canada). Additionally, the Cairns book (Roy Cairns, history of the Cairns family, including Samuel Cairns and wife Maria Gilmour), states that Maria immigrated with her family when she was 9 months old and the journey took 9 weeks. Since she was born in August 1839, that puts their date of immigration at roughly May-June 1841. They seem to have left County Sligo when it was at its peak, before the Great Famine of 1845-1847. The population of the county peaked in 1841 at 181,000. By 1851, due to the Famine, population had dropped to 50,000. Often, origins can be determined by family religion. The Presbyterians were usual former Scots, while other protestants were generally of English descent. Native Irish and Normans were usually Catholic. Sligo has always been primarily agricultural, though it was also an important port in the 1700s and 1800s.

Today it is no longer an individual municipality, but is part of the amalgamated city of Toronto. Records available for Scarborough are later than the known residence of the Gilmore family:

Calvin shares a 42 cM match on chromosome 1 with Denise Plunkett, on 23&Me. Her email:
"Hi Janis, I think my DNA connection with your husband would be back around Sligo, Roscommon, or Mayo. My paternal great grandparents were all from Roscommon. My paternal grandmother's parents James Elwood, b. 1807 & Mary Beirne, b. 1812 were from around Croghan, Co. Roscommon. My paternal grandfather's parents were Thomas Plunkett, b. abt 1818 and Elizabeth McDermottroe, b. abt. 1820. They were married in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, however at the time of their marriage in 1841 the Mayo / Roscommon went through Ballaghaderreen, and Sligo is only a mile or two away. Elizabeth McDermott(roe)'s mother was a Elizabeth Costello, b. abt. 1800, thought to be from Sligo. I think all my great-grandparents emigrated in the 1840s, except for Elizabeth McDermottroe Plunkett. Her four children were born during the famine, 1842-1849, and according to my grandfather's obit, they emigrated after his father died in Ireland, when my grandfather was about 9 yrs. (1856). They went to the area around Downie, Perth Co., Ontario in the mid 1850s, to join Elizabeth's McDermott family. By 1870 my ggrandmother must have died in Canada and the four children moved to Iowa. Here is what I found checking genomes, I also checked them with my brother John and nephew Christopher: Comparison Half IBD # segments George Calvin Gilmore vs. Denise Plunkett 41 cM 1 (We matched on chromosome # 1) George Calvin Gilmore vs. John Plunkett 0 cM 0 George Calvin Gilmore vs. Christopher Plunkett 0 cM 0 _______________________ Janis, you sound very knowledgable about genetic genealogy. Last week someone I matched with gave me the name of a book: Genetic Genealogy by Mary Aulicino. I ordered it from Amazon, it is very recent, compares the companies 23 & Me, FTDNA and Ancestry, I joined all three around December. I hope I can get a better understanding of the basics! Note on the transcription website:
"From medieval times it was required that notification of intention to marriage be given on three consecutive Sundays in church (called publishing the banns). But, as an alternative, members of the Church of Ireland could take out a Marriage Licence Bond. The parties lodged an amount of money with the Diocese to indemnify the Church against there being an obstacle to the marriage. This marriage by licence provided privacy, and was faster than the time taken to read the banns. It was considered more prestigious than having the banns read. The bonds themselves were destroyed in the Fires of 1922, but the indexes remain in the National Archives of Ireland. After 1845 marriages were registered by the State, and are available to researchers. This diocese is in Co. Mayo and Co. Sligo."
