    • Obituary: 17 May 1923, Houston, Texas County, Missouri, USA; From the Houston Herald: "James M. Campbell In memory of James Madison Campbell. Born in Texas county, Missouri, November 1, 181 [sic]; died in Shannon county, Missouri, February 20, 1923; aged 71 years, 3 months and 19 days. Mr. Campbell was married in Texas county on January 28, 1877, to Miss Nannie Smith. To this union were born nine children, six sons and three daughters (a son and a daughter having died in infancy.) The widow, on the home farm in Shannon county, near Summerville; five sons, Willis, of Howell county, Willie and John, of Colorado, and Edward and Mills, of Shannon county, and two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Hines with her mother, and Mrs. Ruie Harris, of Summerville, survive and all were present at the funeral, which was conducted from the Methodist church in Summerville on the 25th of February, 1923. Uncle Jim Campbell was a quiet, unassuming, cool, deliberate, kind, neighborly and gentlemanly gentleman?with human weaknesses and frailties?but with a great host of friends and but few, if any, enemies. His highly unselfish spirit made every one his friend who met and understood him. In his going the community has sustained a great loss in the passing of this excellent citizen and his fine family has lost a world of love, care and protection in his leaving them. Bt sorrowfully all are yielding to this dispensation of divine Providence and to the will of Him who doeth all things well. H. W. C."

      Lewis Campbell 1 male under 10 [?] 1 male 26 - 44 [Lewis Campbell, abt 32?] 2 females under 10 [Catherine, born that year?, and ?] 1 female 16 - 25 [Catherine Boyd, abt 22] 4 slaves
Analysis: this would appear to be a good match for our Lewis Campbell family in some respects. The respective ages of Lewis and Catherine are properly represented, as is their known daughter Catherine, born in about 1810. Discrepencies include the fact that Catherine always stated her birthplace as NC , rather than Virginia. Additionally, we do not know of another son and daughter that had been born to them by this date. However, they might have been children who did not survive to adulthood, or they might have been children that stayed in Tennessee when the rest of the family moved to Missouri, and are thus unknown to us. Next to Lewis Campbell in this census is Cornelius Campbell, who would appear to be approximately of an age with Lewis, and a likely brother. Also on the same page is a Frederick S. Boyd, possibly a relative of Catherine (Boyd) Campbell? On page 13B of the same census there is another Lewis Campbell household, with exactly the same makeup as this Lewis Campbell household; he may have been enumerated twice, due to a move? The only difference is that he lists 5 slaves instead of 4.
