Mr. Story, who was 72 years old, became ill while visiting a daughter, Mrs. Harry Dugger in Tarko, Mo. He was brought home one week ago by his sons-in-law, Charles E. Lape of West Plains and Willie Carter of Amy. He was a pioneer of Howell county having lived on a farm near South Fork. He is survived by three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Lape of West Plains, Mrs. Dugger of Tarkio, Mo., Mrs. Willie Carter of Amy; George Story of Burlington Juction, Mo., and Sam Story of Water Valley, Ark. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Hill Crest Christian church at South Fork, by the Rev. Earl Mustion of Arditta. Burial was made in the South Fork cemetery.\"

    Notes:

Name may have originally been Samuel Patton STORY, since that was a family name - since his father died when he was quite small, his mother may have imperfectlly remembered the middle name. Per Jack STORY.

May be buried at Fowler Cemetery, just off of highway 160 near Arditta. The Howell County Cemetery book lists an "S. T. Story" in that cemetery, with no dates or other data. The cemetery is listed roughly in the order of the grave, rather than alphabetically, which should have placed his stone near that of Vina Sharp, as well as a couple of other Story's. His stone does not appear in the cemetery, but there are a couple of places near where it should be that are empty. Possibly it crumbled. We cannot know with any certainty that this is where his grave is located, but it seems possible that his middle initial of "P." could have been misread as "T."

Samuel married Minnie Ellen Hill on 22 Mar 1884 in Howell County, Missouri, USA. Minnie (daughter of William A. Hill and Mary Frances Ward) was born about 1869 in Illinois, USA; died on 2 Jan 1899 in Pitts, Poinsett County, Arkansas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Married:
The Story Resource book offers their marriage date as 22 Mar 1884. However, the Howell Co Marriage book states: S. P. Story- Minnie M. Hill 23 Feb 1884, by J. W. Mustion, MG.

The latter must be in error, as the marriage license application is dated 22 March 1884.

It states Sam's age as 28, and Minnie's age as 14.

    Children:
    1. Jesse Ellen Story was born in Feb 1885 in Missouri, USA; died on 1 Aug 1976 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.
    2. Minnie Mathilda "May" Story was born on 2 Dec 1888 in Arkansas, USA; died on 8 Feb 1923 in Missouri, USA; was buried after 8 Feb 1923 in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Howell County, Missouri, USA.

    See attached sources.

    Died:
His wife Charity is found without him in the Iron Co MO census of 1860, leading me to believe that he died between 1858 and 1860.

    Notes:

Charity appears in two census families in the 1850 census; once in Randolph Co IL with her parents and two of her VICKERS children; and once with her husband George Foster STORY in White Co IL. Oddly, her youngest VICKERS child, Mary age 6, appears in the George STORY home, while her old two VICKERS children, Eli and Clarinda, appear in the home of her parents. Possibly Charity was visiting her parents when she was enumerated with them on 27 Sept 1850, and had returned home to her husband by Oct of the same year, leaving her older children behind.

  1. 8.  George Story was born about 1751 in Fairforest, Old Ninety-Six District, South Carolina (son of George Story); died after 1820 in Illinois, USA.

    Notes:

1820 White Co IL census reflects both a George STORY Sr (1 free white m 21 +, 1 other white inhabitant) and a George STORY Jr (1 m 21 +, 4 other) This must be George and his son. At this time his youngest known child would have been well grown - probably just him and his wife in the home.

George married Susannah Elder in 1788. Susannah was born in 1769 in Fairforest, Old Ninety-Six District, South Carolina; died in 1850 in Illinois, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
