Birth:
Joseph's death certificate gives his birth as 15 December 1858. There are several typos on the certificate (including the misspelling of "Wayne" County). Alternately, someone may have subtracted wrong.

Birthplace is difficult to read on the death certificate, but appears to have said "Unknown," which has been marked out. The second word is "Yok." I'm guessing the "New" was typed over "Unknown" and "Yok" should have been "York." As in birth in New York state.

The family was known to reside in New York state for a period from the time Charles (b 1846) was young, and Charles was still young when they moved back to Canada (see Charles's deposition in George W's pension file).

It is likely, given this fragile evidence, that Joseph was born in New York State.

That this is the right Joseph Gilmore is confirmed by his age, as well as by the fact that "Chas" Gilmore and Carrie L. Booth served as witnesses to the marriage of Charles W.Gilmore and Kate Eva Lovelock earlier in the year, also in Saginaw Co. It is clear that the witnesses name was recorded wrong, and should have been Joseph--since Charles could not have witnessed his own wedding.

  "I looked at the Anglican church records available, and they start quite late in County Sligo, for the most part. I did some searching in the IFHF church record indexes and I didn't find anything early enough for your Gilmores. There were Thomases and Georges, but they were later than yours. I did find only ONE Thomas Gilmor in the tithe applotment records in County Sligo. He was listed in 1833, which makes the timing right for your Thomas who married prior to 1829. He lived in the Townland of Barnacoghil, in Parish Templeboy, County Sligo. This might be your husband's ancestor. This townland is very small and close to the ocean. Check Google maps. There is an 1839 Directory of the Towns of Sligo and others, but this might just be the major towns. It might be worth looking for that when you are there. The *best* Irish records are the landlords' estate records. The rent rolls that some of these contain are golden. There were Reid/Reed families in County Sligo also. Parish Toomour had both Gilmore and Reed families, which is significant. Kidney/Kidny/Kedney is a very unusual Irish name. Most of them came from County Cork. Perhaps she married in Canada. Given the early time period they left, their religion, and the fact that you've already consulted others, I don't know that I can add much more. Many of the Anglican records were destroyed in 1922. In Sligo the Catholic records are better. If you've exhausted everything on this side of the pond, including searching for the neighbors' Irish origins, then it would probably take some serious digging in any landlords records to hope to find anything. I did find that the name stems from Mac Giolla Mhir. Several of the Gilmore families in the tithe applotment records used the given name Gowan. That is a Scottish surname. When you are there, particularly in Parish Templeboy and Parish Toomour, don't be afraid to ask for local folks named Gilmore. Let me know if you decide to go to Doolin in County Clare and I will give you the B&B name. Cath"

  RESEARCH: 1836, Belleville, Ontario, Canada; A George W. Gilmore, filed a land petition in Belleville, 1836. He was married to Elizabeth Watson, the daughter of Robert Watson. Robert was charged with murder and deeded, by gift, his land to his daughter Elizabeth and her husband George W. Gilmore. Robert Watson's son William was also charged for the same murder. Robert was convicted and hanged and William was found innocent. William claimed his father's land, based on the fact that his father thought they were both going to jail or death. George petitioned the courts to retain the land because it was legally deeded, he had maintained it, and he had borne much of the expense of their trials. He was allowed to keep the land. Could this George W. Gilmore be a brother to Thomas Gilmore? The name and the era make it possible. A long shot, but worth remembering. George's petition was found indexed online at Library and Archives Canada, searching the index "Land Petitions of Upper Canada, 1763-1865" for "Gilmor." The results reflected: Gilmore, George W., Belleville (place), 1836 (year), vol. 212, bundle G 19, petition no. 56, reference RG 1 L3, microfilm no. C-2035. Robert's original petition, Belleville (place) 1821 (year), vol. 529, bundle W 13, petition 20, RG 1 L3, microfilm no. C-2954. Digitally, his short is at image 987. Robert Watson had a second petition, Belleville (place), 1828 (year), vol. 530A, bundle W 15, petition no. 40 RG 1 L3, microfilm no. C-2956. Begins at image no. 560. Found in marriage records, William S. Gilmore, age 39, born in Canada, marriage in April 1882, Ontario, to Coombs.   Immigration: 1840; Compiled evidence indicates the family came between 1839 (Maria's birth in Ireland) and 1842 (Thomas's birth in Canada). Additionally, the Cairns book (Roy Cairns, history of the Cairns family, including Samuel Cairns and wife Maria Gilmour), states that Maria immigrated with her family when she was 9 months old and the journey took 9 weeks. Since she was born in August 1839, that puts their date of immigration at roughly May-June 1841. They seem to have left County Sligo when it was at its peak, before the Great Famine of 1845-1847. The population of the county peaked in 1841 at 181,000. By 1851, due to the Famine, population had dropped to 50,000. Often, origins can be determined by family religion. The Presbyterians were usual former Scots, while other protestants were generally of English descent. Native Irish and Normans were usually Catholic. Sligo has always been primarily agricultural, though it was also an important port in the 1700s and 1800s.

In 1850 Scarborough became a township. It later (much later) became a municipality in the new Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto, then still later was incorporated as a city. Today it is no longer an individual municipality, but is part of the amalgamated city of Toronto. Records available for Scarborough are later than the known residence of the Gilmore family:

My paternal grandmother's parents James Elwood, b. 1807 & Mary Beirne, b. 1812 were from around Croghan, Co. Roscommon. My paternal grandfather's parents were Thomas Plunkett, b. abt 1818 and Elizabeth McDermottroe, b. abt. 1820. They were married in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, however at the time of their marriage in 1841 the Mayo / Roscommon went through Ballaghaderreen, and Sligo is only a mile or two away. Elizabeth McDermott(roe)'s mother was a Elizabeth Costello, b. abt. 1800, thought to be from Sligo. I think all my great-grandparents emigrated in the 1840s, except for Elizabeth McDermottroe Plunkett. Her four children were born during the famine, 1842-1849, and according to my grandfather's obit, they emigrated after his father died in Ireland, when my grandfather was about 9 yrs. (1856). They went to the area around Downie, Perth Co., Ontario in the mid 1850s, to join Elizabeth's McDermott family. By 1870 my ggrandmother must have died in Canada and the four children moved to Iowa. "From medieval times it was required that notification of intention to marriage be given on three consecutive Sundays in church (called publishing the banns). But, as an alternative, members of the Church of Ireland could take out a Marriage Licence Bond. The parties lodged an amount of money with the Diocese to indemnify the Church against there being an obstacle to the marriage. This marriage by licence provided privacy, and was faster than the time taken to read the banns. It was considered more prestigious than having the banns read. The bonds themselves were destroyed in the Fires of 1922, but the indexes remain in the National Archives of Ireland. After 1845 marriages were registered by the State, and are available to researchers. This diocese is in Co. Mayo and Co. Sligo."
