    Other Events:

    • Anecdote:
      "Ash hoe. Ash hopper. Ash bank." Really sneezing, but finishing with the word.
    • Anecdote:
      "Lord bless these table comforts to the nourishment of our bodies and our bodies to thy service. Amen."
    • Anecdote:
      Tom's grandson, William D. Walker tells about his (Tom's) sneezes, which were always in threes:
      "It was "sneeze...ASH HOE...sneeze...ASH HOPPER...sneeze...ASH BANK...This was usually followed by a "nose blow" one nostril at a time, using only his finger. Then a final blow or two of both nostrils to make sure the passages were open. These are good things to know. I'd like to see you demonstrate the process except that he often ended the process by wiping his fingers on the cuff of his overalls!"
    • Anecdote: Tom usually slept with one or two of the boys. In the morning Tom would pull on his overalls just far enough to get a plug of chewing tobacco out of his pocket. Before the need to spit he would go outside--his spitting wasn't allowed in the house. He grew his own tobacco in a little tobacco patch.
    • Anecdote: Tom Walker's usual mealtime prayer: "Lord bless these table comforts to the nourishment of our bodies, and our lives to thy service. Amen."
    • Land: Jan 1851, Howell County, Missouri, USA; In January 1881 Thomas N. Walker filed a homestead patent, the NW 1/4 of Sec 12, Twp 26N, Rg 8W, 40 acres. This is probably where they lived in an older log cabin, and where the bobcat got in and tore up the cabin while they were away (see the stories of Della (Walker) Warren Lonnem.
    • Census: 9 Jul 1860, Danielsville, Middle Division, Dickson County, Tennessee, USA
    • Census: 13 Jun 1870, Pine Wood (post office), 6th Civil District, Hickman County, Tennessee, USA
    • Residence: After March 1879, Crowder homestead, Howell County, Missouri, USA;
      Tom Walker and his wife Tennie Crowder assumed responsibility for the Crowder homestead (his wife's family place) after the death in March 1879 of his father-in-law, Bluford A. Crowder, and his brother-in-law Joshua Crowder. The present-day Walker farm is a portion of the original Crowder homestead. The original house, which was located closer to hwy 17, and around the corner from the present farm, burned.
    • Anecdote: 30 Dec 1879, Howell County, Missouri, USA;
      Della Evaline Walker: "My dad [Thomas Newell Walker] had taken a homestead where I was born in a log cabin and while they went to care for sickness at Grand Pa's and Uncle Josh Crowder, the wildcats tore the chinks out of a crack and went in and tore a piece cloth out of the loom."

      Thomas E. Newell purchased the Crowder homestead from Jane E. Crowder, his widowed mother in law. Described as "the SW1/4 of Sec 31, Twp 27, Rg 7W." Subject to "the support of the said Jane E.     • NEWS: Apr 1914, Howell County, Missouri, USA;
      Item in West Plains (Missouri) Journal, 16 April 1914
      "Mr. T.N. Walker and daughter Lena left Tuesday evening for California. We are sorry to lose them." This may have been when Tom Walker went to California and worked in San Diego for a while. Lena probably kept house for him.
    • Residence: Mar 1917, Mountain View, Howell County, MIssouri, USA;
      References in the letters of Earl Walker to Grace Campbell in the spring of 1917 indicate that he and his younger sister Lena were both at home with their father, Tom.
    • Note: Jan 1919;
      Crowder place burned January 1919, when Donald was a baby. Tom was away. Afterward, Earl and Grace and baby lived in a shed on the place for a while. "Mama carried Don out & Dad carried out the organ [on his back]." Also: "The old Crowder house, located across the fields from the present-day Bill Walker farm (which was once a part of the original Crowder homestead), caught fire one winter. Grace and Earl and baby Donald were living there with Earl's father, Thomas N. Walker. It was a very cold winter; the ponds had frozen over, and they couldn't get water from the cistern to fight the blaze. Grace Walker described it: "And all we did was walk out of there with the clothes on our back and little Donald, except that Daddy went in and brought out the organ on his back." Tom Walker was, at the time, somewhere out of state; there is some dispute about where, but Donald Walker (the baby at the time) says that Tom Walker was in California."

      Tom has not been located in the 1930 census.
    • Residence: Before 1935;
      If the 1940 census is right, Tom was living with his son Earl's family by 1935.

      "Thomas Newell Walker was born in Hickman county, Tenn January 29, 1858. He came to Missouri with his parents at the age of 14 years. They took up their home near Walker?s Chapel, where he grew into manhood. They were among the pioneer families who settled this part of the country. He was married to Phoebe Tennessee Crowder in the year 1877. To this union 11 children were born, four of whom died in infancy. The seven surviving children are Mrs. Della Lonnem of Lincoln, California; Mrs. Ida Johnson of Mountain View; Neal Walker of Lawton, Okla., Luther Walker of Lawton, Okla.; Roay Walker of Gainesville, Florida; Earl Walker of Mountain View; Mrs. Lena Yocky of Long Beach, california. Uncle Tom Walker as he was known throughout the country, was converted and joined the Methodist Church in early life, in which faith he remained throughout his life until God called him to his eternal home September 5, 1942, at the age of 84 years, seven months and seven days. He will be greatly missed by his children and other relatives and many friends as he had spent most of his life in this community and was known the country over."

      Email from Angela McGhie:
      Janis, I was able to go to the BLM office in Virginia last week and read the tract books for Howell County, Missouri. I had just made a note for my tract book lecture to remind people to not only read the name column, but also the pencil notations in all the columns -- then one of those tiny little pencil notations read "NW4 SE 3,033 Thomas N. Walker Jan. 10 & 14, 1881 offd." I believe it is referencing land offered that Thomas N. Walker filed a claim for, but it never went to patent. I was not in a regular row in the volume, so does not give a date of cancellation or relinquishment, but I hope to be able to follow the 3,033 number to an application or other documentation in the land entry papers at NARA. I will let you know when I am able to get there or get someone to search for the file. This pencil notation was on page 114 in volume 6 of the "Missouri Ironton N & W" Tract Book. It was written along the entry for Section 12, Township 26 North, Range 8 West. The only two other Walker entries in T 26 & 27 N, R 8 & 9 W were the one for William E. Walker in Sec. 20, T 27 N, R 8 W for 80 acres, and one for William J. Walker, a homestead in Sec. 21, T 27 N, R 8 W for 160 acres. I will get back to you as soon as I find more... Angela

    Tom's brother William

    He must have been a hard worker. In the twenty years between their move from Tennessee to his death in 1893, he did quite a lot.

    He homesteaded his own place in Hutton Valley. Due to illness, he was absent for all of one spring planting, early in his homesteading process. As soon as he got better he went away and worked hauling dirt for the railroad for two months, presumably to make up for the lack of income that year. By 1888 he had a "box house" which was "comfortable to live in" year-round, and had a stone fireplace and chimney. It was furnished with two bedsteads, a cupboard, a sewing machine, a clock, table and chairs, and a cookstove. He had planted 167 fruit trees and cultivated 25 acres in corn, wheat, oats, and vegetables. They had 2 mules, 1 cow, 21 hogs, 4 sheep, and some chickens. Part of the place was "too rough and stony to be cultivated."

    He was just 37 when he died. We don't know his cause of death, but we do know that he had the earlier illness that didn't allow him to plant. When the Civil War started he was age 5 and when it ended he was 9, and he was the oldest boy in the family, with his father away from home. Privations of the war years may have left him with poor health.

    William was just two years older than your granddad Tom. They suffered the Civil War together as boys, made the move to Missouri together as adolescents, and married about the same time as young men. Their first children were born just six months apart, Della in December 1878 and Henderson in June 1879.

    Tom's next closest brother was Bob, 13 years younger. (Five girls between Tom and Bob.)

    Anecdote:

    [Living next door to Esther's mother, Bedie (Clark) Thornton. "Ann T." listed in census was doubtless a misinterpretation. Son Thomas Newell was the right age for this position in the family, all of the other children are correctly named. It is possible that the initials "T. N." were reversed to "N. T." which sounds very like "Ann T."]

    Possible Census:
    [R. Walker seems to be a good candidate to be Helton Rutherford Walker, who was often called "Rutherford." In support of this possibility:

    • Birthplace of Tennessee, is correct
    • On the following page is George H. Walker, HR's uncle, just a year or so older than HR's father Elijah. It is likely that "R. Walker" and "Geo H. Walker" were quite close in proximity.
    • Also on the page following "R. Walker" is "Jno M. Walker," a likely candidate to be HR's oldest brother "J. M. Walker." While the eldest brother is often named as "James Monroe Walker," the Bible data refers to him only as "J. M. Walker." Additionally, when this John M. Walker of Marshall County, Mississippi, is followed in census to his subsequent home in White County, Arkansas, his burial at Center Hill Baptist Cemetery, states his birth date as 18 September 1824--the exact date given for the birth of Elijah's eldest son "J. M. Walker."
    • HR was not married in 1850 and may have been trying out the possibility of moving to Marshall County, near his family.
    • HR is not found in his parents' household in Tennessee in this census, nor elsewhere in Humphreys or Dickson County
    • HR was enumerated in the next (1860) census as "R. Walker."
    • HR was commonly known later in life as "Rutherford Walker," lending further strength to the references to him as "R. Walker."
    • In conflict with the above, "R. Rutherford" is enumerated as age 20, calculating to a birth year of 1830. However, in terms of census age errors, that is minimal, particularly considering that William Pace may have guessed at his age for the enumerator.

    6. _____, Mary C., 5 months, female, Tennessee

    Obituary:
    The Reverend H. R. Walker was born October 21, 1828; professed faith in Christ and joined the M. E. Church South in 1853. He was married to Elizabeth Thornton on January 26, 1854, and died at his home near Trask, Aug 29 1901 after an illness of ten months during which time his suffering was constant.
    He was perfectly resigned to God's will. For forty years he had stood as a watch-man on the walls of Zion and in his last illness he said he had reviewed his ministerial life over and not one word would he change if he had it to preach over. He was faithful in all his official relations. The writer has known him as trustee, steward, and preacher. He was S. S. Supt. for many years. He performed the duties of each office with conscientious care.
    In his family relations as a husband he was true and affectionate; as a father he was provident and kind. His pure Christian life, his noble character, his high sense of honor and his Godly council is a heritage greater and richer to his children than any amount of gold. The writer can remember forty years acquaintance with him and never knew him to step aside or do a willful wrong. The writer has known him when so afflicted with rheumatism that he could not stand alone, sit and preach lengthy sermons.
    He was laid to rest in Chapple graveyard amidst weeping wife and children and sympathising friends, but his sainted spirit had taken its flight, swept through the gates of the New Jerusalem [illegible] triumphant. He leaves a faithful, loving wife, ten devoted children and a host of grand-children and friends to mourn his loss. But we mourn not as those who have no hope.

    We shall sleep but not forever
    There will be a glorious dawn;
    We shall meet to part, no never
    On the Resurrection morn.

                                Notes:

                                Judge Elijah Walker of the Hickman County Walkers was born in Rockingham, NC. His family moved to Hickman County about 3 years later. About 1849 he was made a judge of his circuit and moved to Savannah, Hardin county, to be more central. He was married to a woman named "Mary E.", who survived him and moved to Maury County. He died on 31 December 1873.

                                The parallels with "our" Elijah are obvious:

                                • Our Elijah was born abt 1802 GA; he was born abt 1809 NC.
                                • Our Elijah married (second) a woman named Mary ("Polly"); the other married a woman named Mary
                                • Our Elijah died in 1872 leaving a widow, Mary Walker; the other died in 1873 leaving a widow, Mary Walker.

                                The differences are equally striking:

                                • Our Elijah was not a learned man, while the other was a judge
                                • Our Elijah bore about 16 children; the other was childless
                                • Our Elijah was not a wealthy man; the other was probably quite comfortable. Regardless of these differences, the similarities are enough to confuse their identities in some cases.
                                  A biography of Judge Elijah Walker can be found on GoogleBooks, in Eleventh Annual Meeting of the Bar Association of Tennessee held at Four Seasons Hotel, Harrowgate, Tennessee(Nashville, Tn.: Marshall & Bruce, Stationers and Printers, 1892), 113-121.

                                  [Research notes]

                                  Early Walkers in Dickson and Hickman Counties
                                  Two early Walkers mentioned are in Goodspeed's History of Hickman county. The first is Samuel Walker, cited as an early settler, arriving in the winter of 1806, just prior to the creation of Hickman county in 1807. The second was Joel Walker, appointed as one of the four first commissioners of the county, who were to "run the boundary lines, establish the county and select a county seat site." Establishing the lineage of these two could be helpful.

                                  Jerome Spence and Davd Spence, _History of Hickman Co Tennessee_ (Signal Mountain, Tenn.: Mountain Press, 1990). Indicates that Allan Walker established Walker's Ferry, one mile above Centerville. "He reared a large family, which became prominent in the development of the county. His sons were: Joel, William, Allan, James, Pleasant, and Elijah. Dr. Joel Walker went to Williamson County, where he became prominent in business and political circles. Pleasant Walker represented Hickman County several terms in the legislature, and was sheriff of the county four years. Elijah Walker became one of the best judges that ever presided in a Tennessee courthouse. He was a good judge of law - not an eloquent speaker, but a profound thinker. He was honest in his decisions and would refuse a fee when his would-be client was in the wrong."

                                  Both the McMillan Gaelic Bible and the Collins Walker Bible agree on the birth date of Elijah Walker. This birth date is supported by the 1850 Humphreys County, Tennessee, census [age 48, born in Georgia] and the 1860 Dickson County, Tennessee, census [age 57, born in Georgia].

                                  Census:
                                  Elizabeth Walker household
                                  2 males 16 - 26 [Elijah, abt 18, George H. abt 19]
                                  1 female 26 - 45 [Elizabeth Walker]
                                  2 engaged in agriculture

                                  1 female under 14 [Ailee?]

                                  Deed:
                                  The deed specifies that offspring of the slave are to be given to his sisters, Elizabeth Heartly, Polly Bazzell [Brazzell], and Ritha Turner. The deed is witnessed by George H. Walker.

                                  This deed is important evidence of relationships, specifying that Elijah is the son of Elizabeth Walker, that Elizabeth, Polly, and Ritha, are his sisters, and that George H., also her "beloved son" is his brother.

                                  It is also evidence of who the three named girls married.

                                  On the same date, Elizabeth Walker also made a Deed of gifts to her son, George H., leaving him a slave boy. Elijah Walker witnessed this deed.

                                  Subsequently, Archalaus Walker came from Illinois an filed an objection in circuit court, ultimately prevailing. The Fisher abstraction:

                                  "Walker, Elizabeth - Died before 7 April 1823 when Jacob Walker and George H. Walker were appointed administrators. (Dic TN, Co Ct Min, 2/no#) A suit was brought by Archibald Walker and others versus Elijah Walker. A jury found that Elizabeth Walker was not of sound mind on 29 January 1823 when she made a deed of gift to Elijah Walker. (Ibid, Cir Ct Min, 3/no#)"

                                  NOTE_RESEARCH:
                                  This could be a good avenue for research. That was a significant amount of money in that day and time. Who was Thomas Hunter, and why did Elizabeth Walker's estate owe it to him? Thomas Hunter appears in the 1820 Dickson County census, age 26-45 (born between 1775 and 1794), on page 10; Elizabeth Walker was on page 16. Elijah purchased 40 acres from a John Hunter in 1824.

                                  Census:

                                  Land Patent:
                                  ". . . on the north side of Hurricane Creek beginning at a white oak about three or four poles from said Walker's house running North and west south and East for complement."
                                  The deed was not proven and filed until 1839, by which time it was in Humphreys County (boundary change), and was registered there.

                                  HISTORICAL:
                                  This explains why Elijah paid taxes in 1835 Dickson County, but in 1837 Humphreys County. He didn't move--the county line did.

                                  From Dickson the following area moved to Humphreys:
                                  ". . . all that portion of Dickson County lying in the following boundaries shall hereafter be attached to and belong to the county of Humphreys: -- Beginning at the southwest corner of Dickson County, and thence running east with the south boundary line of said county o Dickson, to where the said line intersects the ridge that divides the waters of Hurricane creek from the waters of Garner's creek; thence with said ridge, to where said ridge intersects with the ridge that divides the waters of Hurricane creek from the waters of Garner's creek; thence with said ridge, to where said ridge intersects with the ridge that divides the waters of Cumberland and Duck rivers; thence north westwardly with said ridge, to the line that divides the counties of Dickson and Humphreys; thence south with said line to beginning."

                                  And from Hickman to Humphreys:
                                  ". . . all that territory and county now lying in the county of Hickman, within the following boundaries, shall hereafter belong and (be) attached to the county of Humphreys, to wit:--Beginning in the line dividing the counties of Hickman and Humphreys, where the same first strikes Duck River, running south from the north west corner of Hickman; running thence up with the meanders of Duck river, with the main channel, to where the middle of the main ridge dividing the waters of Sugar and Tumbling creeks strikes the river; thence a north easterly course, along the summit of said ridge, between the waters of said creeks, to the main ridge dividing the waters of Garner's and Little Hurricane creek; thence along the summit of the same to the north boundary line of Hickman county; thence west with said line to the north west corner of said county; thence south with the line dividing the counties of Hickman and Humphreys to the beginning."

                                  Land:
                                  This is the original 40 acres that he bought in August 1824, and is where their home was.

                                  Emigration:
                                  Since he sold his land on the Humphreys/Dickson County border it seems likely that he intended the move to be permanent.

                                  The reason for this move remains unknown. Other familiar surnames appear near Elijah's, including two Sawyer families that appear to be related to the Sawyers with whom Archalaus was closely affiliated in Macoupin County, Illinois.

                                  Additionally, a canal was cut shortening by 25 miles the path of the Forked Deer River of Dyer County to the Mississippi. This increased connection to major river traffic caused a boom in the town of Dyersburg and in 1836 the first steamship, The Grey Eagle, began regular trips. This history was gleaned from various places on the internet and a more serious look should be taken at contemporary newspapers or historical accounts to better understand if this might have been a motivator for Elijah's move.

                                  Probate Settlement:

                                  Why, when Elijah had so many children, was the estate administered by Stephen Fielder? It would have been unusual for a daughter to administer.

                                  Of his sons, Helton Rutherford had moved to Missouri a few months earlier; William K. lived in San Joaquin County, California; Levi lived in Illinois, James L. had died in the Civil War, George Neal died in 1867; Calvin M. and Arch were living in the area, but were age 24 and 22, possibly a little young to be expected to administer the estate; Jacob had probably already left home due to mysterious trouble and may have been in Arkansas; Alonzo Denson was underage. Elijah's eldest son, often believe by many to be "James Monroe Walker" was actually John M. Walker--and living out of the state in White Co ARK (he died just a year later).

                                  Elijah married Matilda King about 1823 in Dickson County, Tennessee, USA. Matilda (daughter of Isaac King and Martha Crouch) was born about 1803 in Tennessee, USA; died on 16 Oct 1834 in Dickson County, Tennessee, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Matilda King was born about 1803 in Tennessee, USA (daughter of Isaac King and Martha Crouch); died on 16 Oct 1834 in Dickson County, Tennessee, USA.

    Notes:

    Matilda's last name is often given as McMurry/McMurray. I have never found any documentation for this, other than the presence of others by that name in the county.

    However, a Sullivan County, Tennessee, document (series of documents) makes it clear that her name was Matilda King.

    About the King Farm where Matilda was born. http://www.tncenturyfarms.org/sullivan_county/#King_Farms

    Matilda's first cousin once removed, Oliver Caswell King. His Civil War correspondence with Katherine Rebecca Rutledge (later his wife) are online at the Tennessee State Library and Archives site.
    http://tn.gov/tsla/TeVAsites/KingPapersCollection/index.htm

    Matilda's father was Isaac King. Oliver was the son of Isaac's brother David and wife Elizabeth Sharp. This parentage for Oliver is from the TSLA site, and a subsequent website. However, the King descendancy book cited on my Martha King page states that Isaac's brother William was married to Elizabeth Sharp.

    He was QUITE literate.

    Birth:
    1830 Dickson Co census shows the only adult female in the household of Elijah WALKER to be in the 20 - 30 age category. This would place her birth roughly between 1800 - 1810. Her son, Helton Rutherford WALKER, in the 1880 Howell Co MO census and the 1900 Howell Co MO census indicated that his parents were both born in Tennessee. Jessie Fondy believed that she was born 1800 - 1808 (I don't know where this came from.) LDS records indicate her birth ca 1804 (again, no source documentation). I have chosen to use the only dates that I am able to document - those from the 1830 census.

    Notes:

    Married:
    No record of Elijah's first marriage has been located. Although Dickson County marriage records begin in 1817, a tornado on 30 May 1830 decimated the county seat of Charlotte, severely damaging the courthouse, and resulting in record loss.

    • Elijah's first child,"J. M." (John M.), was born on 18 September 1824
    • Elijah is probably one of the two males found in the 1820 census household of Elizabeth Walker
    • In January 1824 Elijah Walker and wife, the "former Matilda King" appointed William Shelby as their representative in legal actions in Sullivan County, where Matilda's father died about 1814.
    .
    The marriage probably occurred about 1823 in Dickson County.

    Other Events:

    • Emigration:
      The England family of Dickson County, TN, came from Goochland VA, and some of them were in Elbert County, GA, at the same time that the Prognitor Walker family was in Georgia. This data is unclear and unsourced but worth noting simply because they were from the same area and settled in Dickson County. The Walker family may have moved with the England and Evans families from Elbert Co GA. And possibly the Bakers. See citation at the end of this passage. ---------------------------------- (14) Patty Martha ENGLAND, (William ENGLAND, William) was born Jun 15, 1775 in Of, Goochland Co., Va., and on Sep 2, 1795 in Amherst Co., Virginia, married Robert EVANS SR., son of William EVANS and JOYCE, who was born in 1767 in Of, Amherst, Virginia. Patty Martha died about 1806 in Elbert Co, Georgia. Robert died on Jun 8, 1855 in Hall, Georgia. Robert was married to Mahala GRANGER. This family of Evans came from the LDS Registry and Robert of Amherst was married to Martha England. The dates matched exactly. I will see in Amherst and Goochland are one and the same. Children: 1 Elizabeth EVANS was born about 1796 in Amherst Co, Virginia. 2 Anderson (Andrew) EVANS was born about 1798 in Elbert, Georgia. Anderson (Andrew) died on Nov 3, 1823 in Hall, Georgia. 3 Joseph EVANS was born about 1800 in Elbert Co, Georgia. died on Oct 3, 1826 in Hall Co, Georgia. 4 Thomas Carter EVANS was born about 1802 in Elbert Co, Georgia. 5 Robert EVANS JR. was born in 1805 in Elbert Co, Georgia. Robert died in 1885 in Of Milton Co., Georgia. 6 Sarah EVANS was born about 1806 in Elbert Co, Georgia. Dana Sue Tilley, atDNA tested, is in common with William E. Walker, Sandra Pippin, Jerrold Joseph Walker, and Lanelle Boyd. Her line of descent includes a Bull family that has surnames McMurry and Herman. Requires investigation. John Porter McMeans says that her Nail/Neil family came from Franklin Co GA around the same time as Joseph H. Walker.
    • NOTE_RESEARCH:
      John Porter McMeans, DNA-tested descendant of Joseph H. Walker, believed to be Joseph Harmon or Herman Walker. Email from John dated 4 August 2014:
      "Good morning Janis, Logged on as William E Walker this AM and noticed that Dana Sue Tilley, who claims lineage to Joseph H Walker matches Mayville and Pippin very closely. I believe that she descends from Joseph's eldest, but little known daughter Amanda, who married into the Nails that came from Franklin Co, Ga about the same time as Joseph. Has any common surname cropped up that may the spouse of our Walker progenitor?"
    • NOTE_RESEARCH: William Walker's will, Nottaway County, VA, 1789-1802. Had a son named Richard. The weird Dickson County deed for the land that Elizabeth Walker got was to Richard [no surname]--could this have been Walker? Northern Nottaway County is on the waters of the James River. Samuel Allen Walker said he was raised near or on the James River.

    • RESEARCH: The lack of a birth state or close date of birth, as well as no given name for the father or surname for the mother presents research problems. The research path is further complicated by early record losses in Dickson County, Tennessee, their last known place of residence. The county was created in 1803; its 1810 federal census is not extant, few marriage records pre-date 1830, tax lists begin in 1831, and chancery court records begin in 1836. Fortunately, land records and county court records are available from 1804 and early state militia records are also helpful. Drury Walker b. 1766 Va. may have had a brother who migrated into Georgia. Elijah Walker b. 1802 Ga., may have been his son. This is speculation, of course. Researchers interested in Fairfield County, SC are awaiting acceptance from FTDNA for a Project site. This should be a very interesting site as many people in the county are inter-related by marriage. I research the Boulware, Crumpton, Hogan, McCants, Parker, Wilson, and Walker lines and find many double relationships within the family. My own grandparents were 2nd cousins through the Hogan line. Maybe some of this info will assist you. Watch for the Fairfield County, SC Project on FTDNA as there are many Walkers living in the county and hopefully will be tested. I will keep your info and should I come across any of the names I will certainly let you know. Best of luck in your research. Jon Jon P. Ward Greenville and Ridgeway, SC."

    Notes:

    Samuel Allen Walker's daughter's bio (see his entries for sourcing and full text) indicate his birth in Amherst County, Virginia. A search of the FHL's two index volumes for Amherst marriages did not discover a Walker male married to an Elizabeth:
    • Amherst County, Virginia marriages 1763-1800, 975.5496 V2am
      Amherst County, Virginia, marriage bonds 1753-1853, 975.5496 V2sw

      Both volumes contained only these marriages:
      • Joel Walker to Mary Penn (1775)
      • Robert Walker to Nancy Powell (1792)

      The 1775 marriage is early enough for the birth of earliest-known child Archalaus in 1785, and could have been a first marriage for Progenitor?

      Possible parent? George Walker of Goochland County, son of William Walker and his first wife (second wife Jane Burton). George Walker married Eliza Green in 1787 Goochland Co VA, William Walker also mentioned.

      Could this be a second marriage of our Progen to Elizabeth? Possibly Samuel A., Archalaus were from the first marriage? Timing is right for Elizabeth, Polly, etc to begin being born 1790 GA. Married and moved to GA?

      Older brother Patton Walker.

      Patton Walker, who was early in Madison/Macoupin IL area, would have been the uncle of Samuel and Arch.

      Rufus Ray Clark, Jr., has an autosomal DNA match to James R. Walker, Sr. and Gerald Hartley. Rufus is from the Jacob/Agnes line, Gerald from the Elizabeth/James Hartley line, and James R. Walker descends from the Patton Walker who was in Macoupin Co IL.

      HOWEVER, Patton Walker's Y-DNA placed him in Group 26, not Group 2, of the Walker DNA study.

      Most people seem to feel that additional children were James and Matilda.

      Birth:
      Evidence would indicate that Archalaus was the older brother or half-brother of Elijah Walker (1802). Arch's obit indicates that he was born 1783 Virginia. If we assume that progenitor Walker was at least 18 years old, that puts his birth at prior to 1765. Since he was still having children in 1802, it is unlikely, though possible, that he was born prior to 1750.

      (Progenitor) married Elizabeth (--?--) before 1790. Elizabeth was born in 1775-1785; died before 7 Apr 1823 in Dickson County, Tennessee, USA; was buried in Dickson County, Tennessee, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Elizabeth (--?--) was born in 1775-1785; died before 7 Apr 1823 in Dickson County, Tennessee, USA; was buried in Dickson County, Tennessee, USA.

    Other Events:

    • RESEARCH: Hypothesis: Could Elizabeth's surname have been Allen? Hence she named her son after a brother Samuel Allen? There was a Richard Allen--and the name on her same property, earlier, was Richard, with no last name.
    • Possible Residence: 1783, Virginia, USA;
      If Elizabeth Walker was also the mother of Archalus, she probably lived in Virginia in 1783.
    • Residence: 1790-aft 1802, Georgia, USA;
      Elizabeth Walker resided in Georgia as early as the birth of daughters Elizabeth and Polly in 1790 and as late as the birth of Elijah in 1802.
    • Census: 1820, Dickson County, Tennessee, USA;

The deed specifies that offspring of the slave are to be given to his sisters, Elizabeth "Heartly" [Hartley], Polly "Bazzell" [Brazzell], and Ritha Turner. The deed is witnessed by George H. Brazzell. This deed is important evidence of relationships, specifying that Elijah is the son of Elizabeth Walker, that Elizabeth, Polly, and Ritha, are his sisters, and that George H., also her "beloved son" is Elijah's brother. It is also evidence of who the three named girls married. On the same date, Elizabeth Walker also made a Deed of Gifts to her "beloved son" George H. Walker, leaving him a slave boy. Elijah Walker witnessed this deed.
    • Court: 7 Apr 1823, Charlotte, Dickson County, Tennessee, USA; George H. Walker and Jacob Walker are made administrators for Elizabeth Walker, deceased.
    • Probate: 1 Jan 1825, Dickson County, Tennessee, USA

    Notes:

    See attached sources.

    1853 Dickson Co will of Alexander Wilkins mentions in a land description "Elizabeth Walker's spring" and the will is witnessed by Robert A. Reaves.

    Birth:
    We don't know if Elizabeth was the mother of all of "Progenitor's" children.

    1820 census places her age between 26-45, calculating to 1775-1794.

    Birth of "beloved son" George in 1801 (if she was not mother of the older children) suggests that she was at least 14 by that time--probably older--and was therefore likely born between 1775-1786.

    The one census is the only direct evidence we have of Elizabeth's age. If it is right, she could not have been the mother of Archalaus or Samuel. She might, however, have been the mother of Elizabeth, Polly, Jacob, Joseph, Ritha, George H., and Elijah.

    Probate:
    George H. Walker and Jacob Walker, administrators of the estate of Elizabeth Walker deceased sold 56 acres to William B. Dodson, drawn 1 January 1825, acknowledged Court of Pleas October Term 1825, filed 27 January 1826.
