Word was received by P. H. Stokes of Stillwater that his brother, Fred Stokes, a Payne County resident for many years, died on Saturday, December 10, 1960, in El Monte, California. He was born in Howell County, Missouri, and married Ruth Fletcher of Glencoe. There are three children: Donald, Darlene, and Betty."

"Doc and Dosh moved from Missouri to a farm, located in Payne County, Oklahoma, which had been claimed on September 16, 1893, in the Oklahoma Land Run. Mr. William Burch, riding a mule, entered the race and staked claim to the farm two and one-half miles south of Glencoe. He first build a sod house, then a temporary frame one, and finally in about 1897, a more permanent one-story frame structure. In the early 1900's Mr. Burch sold the farm to Allen Bowen, who added a two-story addition. Then in 1912 Mr. Bowen traded the farm and house to A. W. Stokes for $500 and A. W.'s farm in Mt. View, Missouri. After the Stokes family moved to the farm, it became known as 'The Stokes Place.' "

"The Family celebrated the event With a Reunion
Forty-nine years ago, Rev. Thos. Boderjack, at his home five miles from Mountain View, Howell county, Missouri, spoke the necessary words that united in marriage A. W. Stokes and Miss Eudosia Walker. Last Thursday, July 30, 1925, the event was commemorated by a gathering of all the living members of the family, their wives and children at the home of the aged couple in Glencoe.
It was the first time for more than twenty-five years that all the sons had sat at the family table at the same time. It was the intention to celebrate the fiftieth aniversary but some one made a mistake and after all the plans were laid, the mistake was discovered but it was decided to go ahead and celebrate.
A. W. Stokes was born in Indiana November 1, 1854 and lived there and in Clay county, Missouri, untill 1875, when he moved to Howell county, Missouri, where he married, raised his family and continued to reside until 1912, when he traded farm with Allen Bowen and moved to the neighborhood of Glencoe. In 1918 he moved to town, where he has since resided.
Mr. Stokes is a living example of applied thrift. He was born with no silver spoon in his mouth, has been a farmer all his life and has always resided in a "poor man's country," yet he has accumulated enough that he and his wife can live in comfort the rest of their days without work, if they so desired but they are not satisfied to remain idle.
Mrs. Stokes is a native of Hickman county, Tennessee, having been born on December 15, 1854, and is the mother of 11 children, six of whom are living. She is a member of the Methodist church, while Mr. Stokes belongs to nothing except the horse club.
All the living children, their wives and the grandchildren were present at the reunion and are as follows:

"Died Tuesday night.
The body of Eudocia Josephine Stokes who died Tuesday night is to lie in state at the home of her son, Robert Wesley Stokes, near Glencoe. She came to Payne County with her husband, Albert, in 1903. "Dosh", born in Hickman County, Tennessee, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Walker. She is survived by six sons: J. W. Stokes, W. E. Stokes and Robert W. Stokes of Glencoe, T. E. Stokes of Pawnee, Fred Stokes of El Monte, California and P. H. Stokes of Stillwater. She was preceded in death by five young children, Girtie, Luther, Sarah, Albert, and Ruby, who were all born and died in Howell County, Missouri.

Doc Stokes' obituary (posted by Pat Stokes on his FindAGrave entry) states their marriage date as 30 July 1876. It was not recorded until 15 November 1876, so it is possible that T. C. Bolerjack, the J.P. who performed the marriage, may have made an error.

Possible Census:

[R. Walker seems to be a good candidate to be Helton Rutherford Walker, who was often called "Rutherford." In support of this possibility:

Birthplace of Tennessee, is correct

On the following page is George H. Walker, HR's uncle, just a year or so older than HR's father Elijah. It is likely that "R. Walker" and "Geo H. Walker" were quite close in proximity.

Also on the page following "R. Walker" is "Jno M. Walker," a likely candidate to be HR's oldest brother "J. M. Walker." While the eldest brother is often named as "James Monroe Walker," the Bible data refers to him only as "J. M. Walker." Additionally, when this John M. Walker of Marshall County, Mississippi, is followed in census to his subsequent home in White County, Arkansas, his burial at Center Hill Baptist Cemetery, states his birth date as 18 September 1824--the exact date given for the birth of Elijah's eldest son "J. M. Walker."

HR was not married in 1850 and may have been trying out the possibility of moving to Marshall County, near his family.

HR is not found in his parents' household in Tennessee in this census, nor elsewhere in Humphreys or Dickson County

HR was enumerated in the next (1860) census as "R. Walker."

HR was commonly known later in life as "Rutherford Walker," lending further strength to the references to him as "R. Walker."

In conflict with the above, "R. Rutherford" is enumerated as age 20, calculating to a birth year of 1830. However, in terms of census age errors, that is minimal, particularly considering that William Pace may have guessed at his age for the enumerator.

Obituary:

The Reverend H. R. Walker was born October 21, 1828; professed faith in Christ and joined the M. E. Church South in 1853. He was married to Elizabeth Thornton on January 26, 1854, and died at his home near Trask, Aug 29 1901 after an illness of ten months during which time his suffering was constant.
He was perfectly resigned to God's will. For forty years he had stood as a watch-man on the walls of Zion and in his last illness he said he had reviewed his ministerial life over and not one word would he change if he had it to preach over. He was faithful in all his official relations. The writer has known him as trustee, steward, and preacher. He was S. S. Supt. for many years. He performed the duties of each office with conscientious care.
In his family relations as a husband he was true and affectionate; as a father he was provident and kind. His pure Christian life, his noble character, his high sense of honor and his Godly council is a heritage greater and richer to his children than any amount of gold. The writer can remember forty years acquaintance with him and never knew him to step aside or do a willful wrong. The writer has known him when so afflicted with rheumatism that he could not stand alone, sit and preach lengthy sermons.
He was laid to rest in Chapple graveyard amidst weeping wife and children and sympathising friends, but his sainted spirit had taken its flight, swept through the gates of the New Jerusalem [illegible] triumphant. He leaves a faithful, loving wife, ten devoted children and a host of grand-children and friends to mourn his loss. But we mourn not as those who have no hope.

    Notes:
    
    Judge Elijah Walker of the Hickman County Walkers was born in Rockingham, NC. His family moved to Hickman County about 3 years later. About 1849 he was made a judge of his circuit and moved to Savannah, Hardin county, to be more central. He was married to a woman named "Mary E.", who survived him and moved to Maury County. He died on 31 December 1873.
    
    The parallels with "our" Elijah are obvious:

    Early Walkers in Dickson and Hickman Counties
    
    Two early Walkers mentioned are in Goodspeed's History of Hickman county. The first is Samuel Walker, cited as an early settler, arriving in the winter of 1806, just prior to the creation of Hickman county in 1807. The second was Joel Walker, appointed as one of the four first commissioners of the county, who were to "run the boundary lines, establish the county and select a county seat site." Establishing the lineage of these two could be helpful.
    
    Jerome Spence and Davd Spence, _History of Hickman Co Tennessee_ (Signal Mountain, Tenn.: Mountain Press, 1990). Indicates that Allan Walker established Walker's Ferry, one mile above Centerville. "He reared a large family, which became prominent in the development of the county. His sons were: Joel, William, Allan, James, Pleasant, and Elijah. Dr. Joel Walker went to Williamson County, where he became prominent in business and political circles. Pleasant Walker represented Hickman County several terms in the legislature, and was sheriff of the county four years. Elijah Walker became one of the best judges that ever presided in a Tennessee courthouse. He was a good judge of law - not an eloquent speaker, but a profound thinker. He was honest in his decisions and would refuse a fee when his would-be client was in the wrong."

    The deed specifies that offspring of the slave are to be given to his sisters, Elizabeth Heartly, Polly Bazzell [Brazzell], and Ritha Turner. The deed is witnessed by George H. Walker.
    
    This deed is important evidence of relationships, specifying that Elijah is the son of Elizabeth Walker, that Elizabeth, Polly, and Ritha, are his sisters, and that George H., also her "beloved son" is his brother.
    
    It is also evidence of who the three named girls married.
    
    On the same date, Elizabeth Walker also made a Deed of gifts to her son, George H., leaving him a slave boy. Elijah Walker witnessed this deed.
    
    Subsequently, Archalaus Walker came from Illinois an filed an objection in circuit court, ultimately prevailing. The Fisher abstraction:

    This could be a good avenue for research. That was a significant amount of money in that day and time. Who was Thomas Hunter, and why did Elizabeth Walker's estate owe it to him? Thomas Hunter appears in the 1820 Dickson County census, age 26-45 (born between 1775 and 1794), on page 10; Elizabeth Walker was on page 16. Elijah purchased 40 acres from a John Hunter in 1824.

    The deed was not proven and filed until 1839, by which time it was in Humphreys County (boundary change), and was registered there.
    
    HISTORICAL:
    
    This explains why Elijah paid taxes in 1835 Dickson County, but in 1837 Humphreys County. He didn't move--the county line did.
    
    From Dickson the following area moved to Humphreys:
    
    ". . . all that portion of Dickson County lying in the following boundaries shall hereafter be attached to and belong to the county of Humphreys: -- Beginning at the southwest corner of Dickson County, and thence running east with the south boundary line of said county o Dickson, to where the said line intersects the ridge that divides the waters of Hurricane creek from the waters of Garner's creek; thence with said ridge, to where said ridge intersects with the ridge that divides the waters of Hurricane creek from the waters of Garner's creek; thence with said ridge, to where said ridge intersects with the ridge that divides the waters of Cumberland and Duck rivers; thence north westwardly with said ridge, to the line that divides the counties of Dickson and Humphreys; thence south with said line to beginning."
    
    And from Hickman to Humphreys:

    Emigration:
    
    Since he sold his land on the Humphreys/Dickson County border it seems likely that he intended the move to be permanent.
    
    The reason for this move remains unknown. Other familiar surnames appear near Elijah's, including two Sawyer families that appear to be related to the Sawyers with whom Archalaus was closely affiliated in Macoupin County, Illinois.
    
    Additionally, a canal was cut shortening by 25 miles the path of the Forked Deer River of Dyer County to the Mississippi. This increased connection to major river traffic caused a boom in the town of Dyersburg and in 1836 the first steamship, The Grey Eagle, began regular trips. This history was gleaned from various places on the internet and a more serious look should be taken at contemporary newspapers or historical accounts to better understand if this might have been a motivator for Elijah's move.

    Why, when Elijah had so many children, was the estate administered by Stephen Fielder? It would have been unusual for a daughter to administer.
    
    Of his sons, Helton Rutherford had moved to Missouri a few months earlier; William K. lived in San Joaquin County, California; Levi lived in Illinois, James L. had died in the Civil War, George Neal died in 1867; Calvin M. and Arch were living in the area, but were age 24 and 22, possibly a little young to be expected to administer the estate; Jacob had probably already left home due to mysterious trouble and may have been in Arkansas; Alonzo Denson was underage. Elijah's eldest son, often believe by many to be "James Monroe Walker" was actually John M. Walker--and living out of the state in White Co ARK (he died just a year later).

Notes:

Matilda's last name is often given as McMurry/McMurray. I have never found any documentation for this, other than the presence of others by that name in the county.

However, a Sullivan County, Tennessee, document (series of documents) makes it clear that her name was Matilda King.

Matilda's first cousin once removed, Oliver Caswell King. His Civil War correspondence with Katherine Rebecca Rutledge (later his wife) are online at the Tennessee State Library and Archives site.

Matilda's father was Isaac King. Oliver was the son of Isaac's brother David and wife Elizabeth Sharp. This parentage for Oliver is from the TSLA site, and a subsequent website. However, the King descendancy book cited on my Martha King page states that Isaac's brother William was married to Elizabeth Sharp.

He was QUITE literate.

Birth:
1830 Dickson Co census shows the only adult female in the household of Elijah WALKER to be in the 20 - 30 age category. This would place her birth roughly between 1800 - 1810. Her son, Helton Rutherford WALKER, in the 1880 Howell Co MO census and the 1900 Howell Co MO census indicated that his parents were both born in Tennessee. Jessie Fondy believed that she was born 1800 - 1808 (I don't know where this came from.) LDS records indicate her birth ca 1804 (again, no source documentation). I have chosen to use the only dates that I am able to document - those from the 1830 census.

No record of Elijah's first marriage has been located. Although Dickson County marriage records begin in 1817, a tornado on 30 May 1830 decimated the county seat of Charlotte, severely damaging the courthouse, and resulting in record loss.

Elijah's first child,"J. M." (John M.), was born on 18 September 1824

Elijah is probably one of the two males found in the 1820 census household of Elizabeth Walker

In January 1824 Elijah Walker and wife, the "former Matilda King" appointed William Shelby as their representative in legal actions in Sullivan County, where Matilda's father died about 1814.

The marriage probably occurred about 1823 in Dickson County.
