    Notes:

    Birth:
    Though Joanna's cemetery record gives a birthdate of 19 January 1869, her 1870 census enumeration marks her as three years old. It is likely that the day and month are correct in the cemetery listing, but the year wrong.

    • Military Service: 30 Oct 1847, DeSoto County, Mississippi, USA; Pvt., Co. C., Anderson's Rifles, Battalion Mississippi Rifles Joined 30 Oct Mustered in 19 Nov Carded record Vicksburg 8 Dec Period "During the War" March-April 1948 "Sick in Military Hospital Tampico" Reasons I believe this is the right John M. Walker:
      • Enlisted at Hernando, DeSoto County, right next to Marshall Co, where he is found in 1850 census and was married the same year.
      • Although there are a number of John Walker's in Marshall Co in 1850, there is only one John M. Marshall--the one married to Rachel Barnett.
      • There are no John Walkers in DeSoto Co in 1850.
      • Age is about right--22 on the card dated Nov and Dec of 1847, calculating to a birth year of 1825--just one year off.
      • Tax Record: 1848, Marshall County, Mississippi, USA;
        John M. Walker does not appear on the 1848 tax list.
      • Possible Census: 26 Sep 1850, Southern District, Marshall County, Mississippi, USA

      • RESEARCH: 1857-1872, White County, Arkansas, USA; White Co ARK, deed book F:774, John M. Walker to Marcus Stewart. Entered in index, page missing? Have asked Rick to doublecheck. Year uncertain, but that vol. covers 1857-1872, probably toward the latter end of that spread. Rick thought perhaps it was just a microfilming problem at the end of the roll. Have contact APG list to find researcher, and have contacted White Co Hist Soc to see if they know of someone who can check the original deed.

      • DAUGHTER: 27 Oct 1945, Brownwood, Brown County, Texas, USA;
        Daughter Della's death certificate states that her parents were "John M. Walker" and "Rachel Barnett."

      Notes:

      A Theodosia E. Walker is found marrying Stephen B. Byrd in White County, Arkansas on 23 September 1880. An Ancestry record also records Theodosia Cassandra Walker as marrying Steve Burtis Byrd, and states that her parents were John Manley Walker and Rachel Barnett.

      Cassandra is the middle name of J. M. Walker's younger sister (Sarah Cassandra "Cassie" Walker Lasater).

      Birth:
      Despite the fact that so many databases name him as "James M. Walker," it begins to appear that the John M. Walker found in the 1850 Marshall County, Mississippi, census, who married Rachel D. Barnett, and who is later found in White County, Arkansas--could be the same man as the "J. M. Walker" listed as the eldest son of Elijah Walker and his first wife, Matilda.

      The name "James M. Walker" may have come from the Charles Bowen typescript, which contains many errors (as well as much good information) and is not sourced.

      In favor of this:

      • Both the Collins Walker and the McMillan Gaelic Bible list him only as "J. M. Walker," with a birthdate of 18 September 1824.
      • Marshall County, Mississippi, where he was found in 1850, was the county where Elijah's elder brother George H. resided from abt 1834 until his death after 1870. The two were enumerated on the same page. On the previous page of the same census was "R. Walker," an apparent laborer--possibly Helton Rutherford Walker, who is not found in Tennessee in 1850
      • John M. and Rachel D. (Barnett) Walker are found in the 1870 White County, Ark, census. Rachel's parents, Zimmer and Emeline Barnett are found there as well. All four are buried in the Center Hill Baptist Church cemetery.
      • The birth date given on John M. Walker's stone in the Center Hill Baptist Church is 18 September 1824--the same as the birthdate given for J. M. Walker in the Walker Bibles

      This would seem to be a strong indication that the identities of James Monroe Walker from the Walker Bibles and John M. Walker who married Rachel D. Barnett can be merged.

      Possible Census:
      1. Walker, Jno. [possibly Jms?] M., 25, male, farmer, Tennessee
      2. _____, Rachel D., 16, female, Tennessee
      [Next door to the Zimri Barnett household]

      Though this person's name appears to be "Jno M." or probably "John M. Walker," it could be interpreted as Jms--remotely. [See digital image of census.]

      Census:
      1. Walker, J. M., 36, male, farmer, real estate $1500, personal $400, Tennessee, [attended school 2 months?]

      6. B[ele? Bell?], S., 30, male, farm labor, Kentucky
      7. West, S., 7, m, Arkansas
      [The apparent 2 months that J. M. Walker attended school probably actually represents 2 children attending school, an error by the census taker in executing census instructions.]

      [Day and month not stated for this township.]

      Possible Census:
      1. Walker, J. M., 45, male, white, farmer, real estate value $280, personal $600, Tennessee
