    • Death Notice: 22 Oct 1933, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, USA;
Death notice, Martha Jane (Taylor) Crowder Blythe, Kansas City Star
"Blythe--Mrs. Martha J. Blythe, 78 years old, a widow, died last night at her home, the Netherlands hotel, 3835 Main street. Mrs. Blythe leaves two daughters, Mrs. D. J. Foster, of the Netherlands hotel, and Mrs. Leonard Boyd, of Pittsburg Kas., and a son, Baxter B. Blythe, 4276 East Sixty-first street. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o?clock Monday at the Freeman chapel, Forty-second street and Baltimore avenue. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill, Mo."

    Notes:

Census data is inconclusive about the parentage of Martha J. Taylor. Although she is found in the home of John Taylor in the 1860 census, it is difficult to tell whether she is his daughter or the daughter of Alexander TAYLOR, age 26, in the same household. Both John and Alexander are born in TN; it is likely that Alexander is John's son. However, there is also a Mary J. Taylor, age 26, b IL, in the household. She must be the wife of either John or Alexander, and the mother of Martha J. Taylor. The order of listing in census would lead me to conclude that Mary J. , age 26, is married to John, age 46. I would further guess that Alexander, Riley and Nancy J. were from a previous marriage of John Taylor. They youngest three children, Martha J., 5, Luther B., 3, and Adena, 8/12 are probably the children of Mary J. and John Taylor. However, this is onlly a guess.

In the 1870 census, Martha J. Taylor is in the home of James K. P. Smith and his wife, Mary J., b IL. Evidently Mary J.'s husband has died and she has remarried. Neither John Taylor nor Alexander Taylor can be found in the 1870 census, so it is impossible to tell which of them died. Cemetery records have not been helpful in this regard.

In exchanging e-mail with a descendant of Martha's sister, Sarah A. TAYLOR; Sheryl Karlowski-Brown. Sheryl was in possession of the death certificate of Sarah A. TAYLOR, which listed her parents as John TAYLOR and Jane REECE.

    Birth:
Although Martha Jane's death cert states birth in Missouri, the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records all state her birth in Arkansas (ages 5, 15, and 25) Additionally, her younger brother Luther B. was born in Arkansas, while other siblings are listed with Missouri birth.

It seems likely that her death cert is in error.

    Children:
    1. Ladora "Dora" Jane Crowder was born on 10 Dec 1875 in West Plains, Howell County, Missouri, USA; died on 7 Nov 1961 in 3612 Wyandotte St., Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, USA; was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, Cass County, Missouri, USA.

    • Anecdote: Oct 1864, Giles County, Tennessee, USA; Another of the stories that came to us from Della is the story of the Union soldier and the syrup pail. In her words, again (written to her daughter, Fartha Lonnem): "That syrup pail row you spoke of was between Grandma Crowder and a Union soldier. She had seen them take every vessel they could find to carry out maple syrup in, even the soap pail. But when they started with the last water pail she held on and in the struggle grabbed syrup and rubbed in his face and eyes then upset the pail pouring part of it on him, and was crying on the step as he went away with the pail. Then a Union soldier she had made a chicken soup dinner for when he came to her near sick and asked for it, came and asked what's the matter and she told him 'that man is carrying away the last pail I have to carry water from the spring'; and right away he called to the guy 'Bring that pail back to her or (drawing his 45) I'll shoot your damned brains out,' and he turned and brought it back. The Union army was camped 1/2 mile from the place and had run out of provisions and they took 40 head of fattening hogs and sheep and geese and cattle and long years after Grandpa was gone (I was 10 yr or so) Grand Ma got $500 in gold collected from the Govt by a lawyer A.W. 4. 7.  Mary Jane Reece was born about 1834 in Illinois, USA; and died.

    Notes:

In exchanging e-mail with a descendant of Martha's sister, Sarah A. TAYLOR; Sheryl Karlowski-Brown. Sheryl was in possession of the death certificate of Sarah A. TAYLOR, which listed her parents as John TAYLOR and Jane REECE.

I have been told that the name was REECE, but there are so many REESES in Howell Co that I think it is possibly an alternate spelling.

    Notes:

    Married:
Marriage date is a guess based on: It would appear from the 1860 census that Mary J. was the mother of the youngest three children, Martha J., Luther B. and Adena. There is a 7-yr gap up to the next child, Nancy J., who would have been born when Mary J. was only 14. It would seem reasonable to assume that John Taylor was previously married and had at least three children by the first marriage. There is a 20-year age gap between Mary J. and John Taylor.

    Children:
    1. 3. Martha Jane Taylor was born on 25 Aug 1855 in Arkansas, USA; died on 21 Oct 1933 in Kaw Township, Jackson County, Missouri.
    2. Luther B. Taylor was born about 1857 in Clay County, Arkansas, USA; died on 21 Apr 1882 in Corning, Clay County, Arkansas, USA.

    4. Sarah A. Taylor was born on 15 Apr 1863 in Missouri, USA; died on 4 Jun 1933 in Kaw Township, Jackson County, Missouri.
    5. Nancy A. Taylor was born about 1864 in Missouri, USA; and died.

Re: African American Crowders gregwhite12 (View posts) Posted: 19 Oct 2002 04:25PM Classification: Query Hi, Gina. I suspect most, if not all, of the African-American \"Crowder\'s\" from Monroe County, GA are descended from the former slaves of John Terrell Crowder (1820-1895), prominent local politician, planter and colonel in the Confederate Army. I\'ve probably done more research on Colonel Crowder than anyone alive today. He\'s a key figure in my book, \"A History of the 31st Georgia Volunteer Infantry\". He was the inventor of the \"Crowder Pea\". His plantation was in the Boxankle Community of Monroe County, along the Towaliga River. His house is still standing, I believe on the road connecting Boxankle to High Falls. I seem to recall seeing a slave narrative from a former slave owned by Col. Crowder\'s father (Fred?). It was in the Georgia volume to the American Slave Narrative series published in the 1930s. Most good libraries should have this set. I hope I\'ve been of some assistance. Good luck in your noble endeaver! Sincerely, Greg C. White -------------- Also FindAGrave for this Crowder line: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/47291076/john-terrell-crowder

Vincent Tidwell, 86 acres, 1 white poll

    Notes:

6 of Vincent and Phebe Tidwell's children served the Confederacy.

Jane Eveline Tidwell would have been abt 18 at the time of the 1840 census, and she is not reflected in the household. It is my guess that she may have already married William Tacker. I have written to the Tennessee State Library and Archives to ask them to check the published record of TN marriages prior to 1861, which they will do with no fee.

    Died:
Vincent must have died between 1868 and 1870, because his wife's "widow's year" support is in Will and Inven. Book 1868/70.

Vincent married Phebe Ann Rackley on 10 Jan 1817 in Giles County, Tennessee, USA. Phebe (daughter of Silas Rackley and Diana Manning) was born on 4 Jul 1799 in Nash County, North Carolina, USA; died on 15 May 1883 in Giles County, Tennessee, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
