Hi, thanks for Repling, really looking forward to seeing the cemetery, and the homestead, you both have been great, here's just about everything i have on George it was passed down from relatives that visited him, and kept in touch with him. Thanks for everything, and Keep in touch, would love to know anything you can add to this. Mchael Morgan Stadler (Michigan)
GEORGE WASHINGTON MORGAN: Born August 3, 1839 in Graves county, Kentucky. In 1844 he moved with his family to decatur County, Tennessee. He could always rememberthe covered wagon trek as he grew older, especially walking along by the covered wagons with all their worldly possessions drawn by big oxen. His people were farmers so he grew up on his father's homestead. His father had taken a homestead for him in 1844. George helped clear the landof timber, helped build a house and a little log church which was used for worship and school. This log church was known as Bluff Chapel. On his homestead later is where the Morgan family cemetery was established. George had gone to Nashville for schooling. August 18 1862, When the Civil war broke out between the states over the slavery question he enlisted in the Union army he was 23 and enrolled in company "A" , 7th regiment of the Tennessee calvary of Volunteers . He was captured by theConfederates at Union, Tennessee March 24, 1864 and held in the Andersonville Prison in Georgia. This prison was known as the "slaughter pen" and was known to be the worst. He was lined up before a firing squad with many other prisoners to be shot. The bullet went all the way through his arm and lodged in a prisoner three rows back. George pretended his injury was much worse than it really was, and they thought he was going to die. He was exchanged for one of their own prisoners from the Union Army on November 18, 1864. He spent nine months in prison. He spent some time in a Military Hospital in Ohio, then was returned to active duty until the end of the war, was discharged August 9, 1865. His war file number is X C 3787807 on file in Washington D.C.
Five months after the close of the war he was married to Susanah Elizabeth Medling, born March 21, 1847, of Scotts Hill, Tennessee, on January 4, 1866. They moved onto the homestead his father had taken for him in 1844, where they had built a house and the little log Church. George taught two school terms here. George and Susanah had two children while living here:
1) Lucinda Elender Morgan, born October 29, 1866, died in infancy. 2) William Sherman Morgan, born January 15, 1868, died May 10, 1922.
George and Susanah sold their homestead to George's brother Frank and moved to Howell County, Missouri in the fall of 1868. Here they had three more children:
3) Laura Alice Morgan, born August 29, 1870, died November 19, 1931. 4) Cordelia Ann Morgan, born March 29, 1871, died 1936. 5) Mary Jane Morgan, born June 15, 1873, died April 1952.
George and Susanah lived on a farm near Mountain View, Missouri where he had taken a homestead. Susanah died August 18, 1874. and is buried at Walker's Chapel Cemetery, George greatly felt the need for a mother to his five young children and a wife for himself. Five months later he married Rebecca Ann Rushing, born August 22, 1845, died January 2, 1918. from Clifton, Wayne, Tennessee on December 20, 1874. Rebecca and George had seven children:
6) Martha Caroline Morgan, born November 24, 1875, died December 9, 1961. 7) George Walter Morgan, born December 11, 1877, died ? 8) Cora Almarene Morgan, born March 24, 1879, died December 8, 1962. 9) James Perry Morgan, born February 11, 1881, died ? 10) Arra Permelia Morgan, born January 2, 1883, died August 13, 1968. 11) Arthur Harrison Morgan, born February 21, 1886, died December 11, 1960. 12) Oscar Miniard Morgan, born September 6, 1889, died December 6, 1969.
George W. Morgan was a successful farmer; he owned much land in and around Mountainview in Howell County. He was a stockman, including the raising of mules, jacks and jennies. He was now 79 years old and still needed a wife. Five months after the death of Rebecca Ann he was married to Nina Pound in West Plains, Missouri on July 24, 1918. They had no children.
George Washington Morgan died November 9, 1930. He is buried in the Walker's Chapel Cemetery near Willow Springs in Howell County, Missouri. He lived 91 years, 3 months and 6 days. | Morgan, George W. (I2378)
