Obituary, Earl Reeves, probably in a local Simla area newspaper
Our brother, Earl Theodore Reeves, was born near Simla, Colo., November 6, 1909. He departed this life April 20, 1938, at the age of 28 years, five months and 14 days. He was the third son of our brother and sister, Wesley Whitfield Reeves and is survived by them as well as six brothers, Ernest of Grand Junction, Paul Marshall, Harold, Vergil and Lester, all of Simla. Our tenderest sympathy goes out to the members of the immediate family over the loss of a son and brother. Our brother was received by the First Baptist church of Simla, Colo., September 8, 1926. He followed his Lord in baptism soon after. Since that time he has been a faithful member and quite recently took the work as teacher of the Young Peoples group. The church will miss his presence most keenly. Our brother was graduated from Simla Union High school in the class of 1929. The greatest thing that can be said of any man can be said of Earl: He was loved by all who knew him. God according to his foreknowledge and in his infinite grace and mercy saw fit to take our brother suddenly from our midst into his Presence.

Obituary, Earl Reeves, unindentified newspaper
Earl Reeves, 28 year old Simla youth, was instantly killed late Wednesday afternoon, when struck by lightning as he was working in the field.
Earl, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Reeves, and a graduate of Simla Union High School, made his home with his parents on their farm about five miles south of Simla.
The accident occurred about 4:30 o'clock while Mr. Reeves was plowing with a tractor, but was not discovered until approximately thirty minutes later, when two other men working nearby, saw the tractor circling around apparently out of control, they decided to investigate.
Nearing the tractor, they saw it was driverless, and upon further investigation found Earl lying in the field. The tractor had been running about in a circle and the body was found some distance from the machine.
Dr. D. O. Groves, County Coroner, was called to investigate the accident, after which the body was removed to the Deits Funeral Home in Limon.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Evangelical Church in Simla Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Obituary, Joel Franklin DeBoard
From the Mountain View Standard

August 15, 1919

REV. J. FRANKLIN DEBOARD - Uncle J. Franklin Deboard was born in White county, Illinois, July 13, 1836, and died June 15, 1919. He toiled along in this old troublesome world for 83 years, 11 months, and 2 days. He was wonderfully saved at the age of 16, and united with the M.E. church. He united in marriage August 26, 1858, to Margaret A. McKinsey, who was a faithful wife and helpmate, being converted to Jesus Christ in her 15th year. She still waits and mourns his departure. To this union were born thirteen children, seven girls and six boys. Five boys and two girls still are waiting their departure when they shall join their father and loved ones who have crossed on over the tide. Two girls, Mrs. J.H. Goodman and Mrs. W.L. Beard, and S.S. Deboard, live north of Chandler, Okla., and two boys, A.L. and R.H. Deboard, and two other sons, A.E. and L.L. Deboard, still live near Mountain View. Rev. Deboard was licensed to preach in the M.E. Church in 1860. He volunteered in the union army in August, 1861, and made a good soldier for three years, being honorably discharged in August, 1864. He left Illinois and came to Howell county in 1876, where he lived until his death. Shortly after arriving in Missouri he united with the Congregational church and was ordained to preach. 'Uncle Franklin' as he was called, was not a great preacher as some call great, but was one in whom everyone had confidence. He was always on hand at preaching services, prayer meetings, and Sunday school to do what he could for the Lord and the church. He was not only a preacher, but was one of the best Sunday school class leaders in the church. He was present to marry young people and also to bury the dead. 'Uncle Franklin' was well known and loved by both young and old. Especially was he loved by the host of grand-children, there being thirty-seven grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. Truly it was a shock, and we are grieved to lose him as husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and church worker. But our loss is his gain, so we say 'Amen' to the Father of Lights who doeth all things well. His grandson, Rev. Franklin N. Deboard.

Reasearch NotesA courthouse fire consumed marriage records in Hickman County prior to 1866. Sarah is generally believed to have married Daniel Lindsey Brown prior to 1852. Brown was the son of the 13th Governor of Tennessee, Gov. Neal Smith Brown.

Some people believe that the daughter listed as "Sarah" may have been the same person as the "Martha" who appears in Alexander Clark's home in the 1850 census, but is not seen afterward.

Sarah is generally believed to have died about 1866, and her four attributed children are:
William J. "Buck" Brown-may have ridden with Jesse James, Cole Younger, etc
Jenny Brown, m. Claud Plunkett
A.C Brown, b abt 1858, no further info

Sues Railway Co., Signed Release When Ill, Says
Charging that the claim agent department of the New Orleans Railway and Light Co., took unfair advantage of him, while he was in a weaker condition, mentally and physically, owing to his injuries and the opiates which had been administered to him by surgeons, Harold H. Heno asks, in a suit filed Wednesday in the civil district court, for judgment against the company for $31, 208.50 damages, and the annulment of a release from liability which he is alleged to have given the company while he was still in the hospital.

The substance of the petition in Heno's suit is that he was employed as a deputy to the United States marshal [sic] during the recent street car strike; that he went down to the Orleans-St. Bernard parish line on July 21, 1920, to investigate a charge that strikers and sympathizers were threatening to molest strike-breaker car crews. Finding the rumor unfounded, he attempted to board a car by the front platform on which he was required to stand, the car started off with a jerk, the handlebar, of which he had taken hold, pulled loose from its fastenings, he was thrown to the ground. His leg had to be amputated as a result of his injuries.

He declares that five days after the accident, while he was suffering mentally and physically a representative of the claim agent's department of the N. O. R. Y. , and Light Co., called on him at the hospital, handed him $400 and had him sign a paper which he afterwards learned was a release of the railway company from liability [sic] for any further sum in [carnages?].

  • A Thomas J. Lasater, born 21 September 1862, died on 26 February 1940 and is buried in Solgohachia Friendship Cemetery, Conway Co ARK. This is probably the Thomas J. Lasater found as "father" in 1930 Conway Co census, in the home of his son Thomas C. Lasater born about 1891 in Missouri. The latter census indicates the elder Thomas was born in Tennessee.
  • No likely Thomas Lasater is found in Collins cemetery with many of the other Lasaters
  • Thomas Lasater has not been located in Missouri online death certificates
  • A web search has not turned up Thomas and Ann Eliza his wife.

Possibly the obituaries of other family members will provide a clue to Thomas's whereabouts after the time of his marriage.

  • Adam is confirmed to be the son of John and Emeline (Cunningham) Roush by his death certificate.
  • An Adam Roush married Maggie Yates in Howell County on 5 April 1890; Adam would have been age 24, and it seems likely that he was the Adam concerned. No other Adam Roush of marriageable age is known to have been in the county except for his Uncle Adam Roush who was still married to Livonia Chowning. However, his identity as the groom it is not otherwise confirmed.
  • Adam has not been located in the 1900 census
  • Adam appears in the 1910 Scott Co MO census with his wife "Martha C." born abt 1870 in Illinois. Also in the home were daughters Emma J. (abt 1894, IL); Fannie M. (abt 1896, IL); Dola (abt 1901, MO); and Minnie (abt 1904 MO)
  • Adam is found in the 1920 Scott County census with wife "Catherine" born abt 1870 in Illinois. In the home were his daughters: Emma born about 1896 in Missouri, whose mother was born in Illinois; and Dora born about 1897 in Missouri, and married to Harry [Voyles?], also of the home. Dora's husband's surname is not clear. Variant searches on the possible surname fail to turn up a marriage record or a 1930 census record for Dora and her husband.
  • Adam is found in the 1930 Scott County census with wife "Ellen" who was age 53, born in Texas. In the home was step-daughter "R. L. Bizzell"
  • Adam's 1951 death certificate names "Ella Roush" as his wife
  • There is a marriage record for Adam Roush to Ellen Bizzell, 10 December 1927, New Madrid County, Missouri
  • A RootsWeb WorldConnect file indicates that Adam Roush, born 1866 in Howell Co MO, married "Mattie Payner," who was born 1866 in White Co, IL, and that they had a duaghter, Fannie May Roush, who was born Nov 1896 in White Co IL. • The same WorldConnect file reflected a marriage between Fannie May Roush and Henry Bolden, resulting in the birth of Charles Henry Bolden in 1919 in Scott County, Missouri
  • A marriage between "Miss Fanny Roush" and H. M. Bolden is found in 1913, Scott County, MO
  • A 1950 death certificate for Fannie May Bolden, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, states that her parents were Adam Roush and Mattie "Payner" and that she (Fannie) was born 1896 in White Co IL
  • The same WorldConnect file stated that Mattie (Payner) Roush died in 1926 in Ripley County, Missouri
  • A 1926 Ripley County death certificate is found for Mattie Roush, stating that she was born 1866 in Illinois. The informant was Adam Roush

  • Named in death index as "Martha Eliza"

  • Luther's death certificate gives date of birth as 11 April 1891, Miller County
  • Luther's 1900 census enumerations date of birth is April 1889
  • Luther's 1910 census enumeration date of birth calculates to 1889

In conclusion, it seems likely that the death certificate offered the right day and month of birth but the wrong year. The informant was Luther's father. The 1900 census, closest to the event, was likely to be right. His mother was more likely to have been the census informant.

A "Dorothy Lish "Dolly" Osteen funeral notice appeared in Nashville newspaper on 3 April 2000 in Nashville. Amazingly, this was not the daughter of Effie (Walker) Lish.

The obit references a surviving sister, Annie Lee Osteen of Signal Mountain, Tennessee. A Google search finds a FindAGrave entry for Annie Lee Osteen which includes her 2009 obituary. The obituary states that she was the daughter of Lee and Ada Lish and names siblings including sister Dorothy "O'Steen" who married "Leslie O'Steen." See her entry at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Hamilton County, Tennessee.

A "William" or "Wm" Walker does not appear in the 1855 Dickson County tax record for District 2, nor does he appear in the 1858 or later tax records. He appears only in the first year after turning 21. This agrees with the statement of William K. Walker of San Joaquin County, California, that he arrived in California in 1857.
