John Best is found living in the home with Britty's likely father, Steven/Stephen Sawyer, but with no wife present. Four-year-old John Best, also found in the 1850 census, appears with his father in the 1860 census, supporting these conclusions--and rendering it likely that 7-year-old Margret Best in the 1850 census was also the child of John Best and his first wife, Britty Sawyer.
In 1851, John Best married Sophia Sawyer. | Sawyer, Britty (I4504)

John Lasater's death certificate indicates his birth in Tennessee. However, his census data consistently places his birth in Missouri and it is likely that this was an error on the part of the informant (name illegible), who probably knew that his family came from Tennessee. | Lasater, John (I1763)

Josephine H. Jones numbered genealogy indicates that Mary Huntington Walker and her husband John Yeary raised Josephine and Maude Walker, the children of James Charles Wilson Walker and his wife Maude Oliver. The genealogy states that they raised the girls because they were "babies when their mother died."
This fits with the death date found on the Nichols Family Tree (Ancestry.com), that Maude died on 19 April 1902. | Oliver, Maude (I6084)

Judge Elijah Walker of the Hickman County Walkers was born in Rockingham, NC. His family moved to Hickman County about 3 years later. About 1849 he was made a judge of his circuit and moved to Savannah, Hardin county, to be more central. He was married to a woman named "Mary E.", who survived him and moved to Maury County. He died on 31 December 1873.
The parallels with "our" Elijah are obvious:
- Our Elijah was born abt 1802 GA; he was born abt 1809 NC.
- Our Elijah married (second) a woman named Mary ("Polly"); the other married a woman named Mary
- Our Elijah died in 1872 leaving a widow, Mary Walker; the other died in 1873 leaving a widow, Mary Walker.
The differences are equally striking:
- Our Elijah was not a learned man, while the other was a judge
- Our Elijah bore about 16 children; the other was childless
- Our Elijah was not a wealthy man; the other was probably quite comfortable.
Regardless of these differences, the similarities are enough to confuse their identities in some cases.
A biography of Judge Elijah Walker can be found on GoogleBooks, in Eleventh Annual Meeting of the Bar Association of Tennessee held at Four Seasons Hotel, Harrowgate, Tennessee(Nashville, Tn.: Marshall & Bruce, Stationers and Printers, 1892), 113-121.
