Subsequent affidavit from Rhoda J. (Walker) Lacource later states that she had remembered and stated his birth wrong, actually was 9 August 1885, and his brother Ira J. actually 2 December 1891--both a year younger than previously stated. Possibly for pension advantages?

Supporting the variants of this name, a website discussing Archaelaus Wheeler, born in Buckingham VA--same geographic background. This information could be useful in proof argument.
"There are many spellings of the name "Archelaus," e.g., Archer, Archibald, Archless, Achilles, Archilles, and even Eschelus. According to "Wheeler Cousins," there was only one man named Archelaus Wheeler in Virginia during the 1700s. The earliest record concerning Archelaus Wheeler is his listing in the 1774 Tithables of Buckingham Co., VA where he appeared as "Archer Wheler."

Susan is consistently named as a daughter of Samuel Allen Walker based on her 1839 marriage to Charles N. Ohlhousen. She was underage and the marriage required her father's consent.

See "Ohlhousen Notes 1" and "Ohlhousen Notes 2," both from Darryl Morrison (Richland, WA), by way of Lawson "Stan" Howland, with whom I have communicated by email on several occasions. He sent me two pages of Darryl's work, email dated 18 June 2014, containing references to this permission.

I have obtained copies of the certificate and the filing for Susan's marriage, but neither references a permission.

WPA records indicate that permissions were required for underage brides and were filed. I called the county clerk, who assured me that I have all of the records available for this marriage. I contact an archivist at the Illinois State Archives who stated that those records are all retained in the counties, and the archives has none of them. I sent a sub-contracted researcher in person to search for the document and she had no more success than I did.

On 19 June 2014 I called Darryl Morrison in Richland, WA (509-375-1125) and left a message with both my phone number and my email address, telling him my interest and asking for a contact.

Susan was not of age and her father had to grant permission for her to marry, thus identifying her as the daughter of Samuel A. Walker.

Marriage license does not reflect this. Another marriage record somewhere?

The 1820 census places her as of 16 and under 26, narrowing the age parameters to 1795-1804. Knowing that Nancy was married in 1814, and presuming that Nancy was at least 14 at the time of her marriage, she was probably born 1795 and 1800.
George, Nancy (I33)

The 1830 census reflects a female in the household, age 10-15. Since Joseph and Mary were married in 1819, it is likely this female was born about 1820. She remains unidentified.
Walker, Amanda (I5971)

The 1850 census enumerated Archalus as born abt 1783 in South Carolina. This must be weighed against the 1860 census and his obituary, both naming his birthplace as Virginia.

In the same household was his likely brother, Jacob, whose birthplace was also given as South Carolina.

In Jacob's case, at least, it is unlikely that he was born in South Carolina. Several of Jacob's known children have been located in the 1880 census or later, and reported their father's birthplace:
  • John McLean Walker, "Georgia"
  • Archalaus C. Walker, "Georgia"
  • Joseph Walker, "Georgia"
  • James A. Walker, "Kentucky"

Daughter Mary M. Walker (Best) was not located in the 1880 census, but in both the 1900 and 1910 census, her father's birthplace was given as "Tennessee."

Since so much evidence points to Jacob's birthplace being in error in the 1850 census, it lends even more likelihood that Arch's was also in error, probably reported by Jacob's wife, Agnes.
Walker, Archalaus (I3180)

The 1870 census appears to list John as 3 years old--out of sequence with his family. It is likely that it actually says 8 (calculating to birth in 1862), which would be consistent with the 1880 census (age 19, calculating to 1861). His death certificate gives his birthdate as 23 May 1861.
Clark, John Thomas (I2337)

2416
The 1900 census gives Alonzo birth as December 1870. The 1910 and 1930 census are consistent with this. The 1920 census calculates to a birth year of 1874.

Alonzo's death certificate gives a birth date far out of line with all of these, as 1884. It's likely that the informant, his son, was just wrong.

Birthplace from death certificate.

The 1900 census lists Irene as age 2, born in June 1897, Her FindAGrave entry shows her birth as 11 June 1898. It is likely that the day of her birth is correct, but the year on her cemetery marker incorrect.
Walker, Irene (I686)

The 1900 census reports James's birth date as September 1888. However, Edward Walker and Mary Bogue were recorded in Gentry County with a male birth on 26 October 1888. The latter is the more likely date, since it was reported just five days later on 1 November 1888--and the census birth data may have been provided by his step-mother.
Walker, James (I4408)

The 1900 Gentry County enumeration of Sylvester E. and Elizabeth Ann (Rodgers) Walker states that she has had 6 children, all living. One may have been born between William and Mary, and was already married or working elsewhere by the time of the 1900 census.

The 1911 obituary/death notice of Louisa (Page) Walker stated that she had a daughter "Mrs. R. C. Nelson" of Colfax--presumably Colfax in nearby Placer County, California.

The 1923 obituary/death notice of Aaron Walker named known siblings, plus a sister, "Bella Bliss" of North Fork--presumably North Fork, Madera County, California.

A Bella Bliss is found in 1920 census with husband Mose Bliss. This Bella Bliss was born about 1882 in California. It seems unlikely that William and Louisa (Page) Walker would have had a child born in California in 1882, since they had known daughter Gertrude about 1883 in Illinois; and known sons George and Aaron in 1884 and 1887, respectively, both in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma).

No R. C. Nelson has been located in the 1910 Placer County census.

No California marriage record has been located for Bella Walker or Bella Nelson.

The Campbell Bible calls her "Nancy Maries Campbell," never mentioning Smith as her maiden name. Her name is written twice in the Bible, and in both cases it appears to have an 's' on the end of "Marie,' though that is not usual, and the writing is not clear enough to be definitive.

The cemetery marker for this Samuel Walker states that he was age 8 at his death, calculating to a rough birth year of 1864. It names his parents as "A. G." and "Mary" Walker. The "A.G." should probably be "A.C." for Archalus C. Aalker and his wife Mary Sawyer, whose son Samuel was age 7 in the 1870 Macoupin County census.

The Collins Walker Bible came down through Arch's family. In it, listed as an apparent child of Arch and Jane is "M. A. L. Walker." With the deaths a few lines later, "M. A. L. Davis" is listed--it seems reasonable to assume that the surname was entered in error.

Additionally, the 1900 census for Jane states that she has borne 6 children, of whom 5 are living.

The Collins Walker Bible offers H. W.'s birth date as "March 30, ---" with no year appended.

The McMillan Bible offers the date as "May 30, 1857."

One of these Bibles was probably copied from the other and "Mar" (abbreviation for March) mistaken for "May"--or vice versa.

The McMillan Bible "had a date 1786, but the fly leaf was missing." The Collins Bible has no accompanying publication data. No information on varying hands, pens, etc. With nothing further to go one, the date could be either.

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church was founded in Dickson County, Tennessee in 1810. In 1823 a branch of the church was established in Bond Co IL (Mt. Giiead Cumberland Church).

Rev. McAdow was one of the Dickson County founders of the church. He lived in Dickson Co from at least 1810-1815, then moved to Jackson Co TN. In the fall of 1828, however, he moved to Bond Co IL. Could his presence, and that of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, have been part of the inspiration for the move of Richard and Levina (Hartley) Tatom and James and Elizabeth (Walker) Hartley from Dickson Co to Bond Co?

Additionally, Rev. McAdow and several others of the Cumberland Presbyterian movement came from Orange Co NC and environs. Richard Tatom's family were also from that area. Possible relationship there?

Some of this material comes from the Cumberland Presbyterian Church website

The date of Elizabeth Hartley's death comes from the family Bible. The place, Bond County, Illinois, is supported by:
  • The biography of her son, John E. Hartley, which states that the family moved to Bond County from Dickson County in 1831; and that the family moved on to Polk County, Missouri, in 1837.
  • Elizabeth (Walker) Hartley clearly died of childbirth since her last child, William Carroll Hartley was born on 23 October 1834, and she died on the same date.
  • William Carroll Hartley was consistently enumerated in census with a birthplace of Illinois.
  • Oral history among the Hartley descendants.

The date of the divorce is from the Heycuz website, which cites among other sources the Hickman County website of a Leonard McCown. This site could not be located, but apparently held some Hickman County Chancery Court records, 1877-1882.

The individual report on Heycuz went on to say that he left Martha J., but also said that his wives "could not live with him, as he did not seem to know water was for cleanliness."

The death certificate of Florence (Hartley) Mullins offers one discrepancy: place of birth. While Florence was clearly born in Oregon, as supported by every census enumeration, her birthplace is cited on the death certificate as Georgia. Her grandparents, James Hartley and Elizabeth (Walker) Hartley) were both born in Georgia.
Other information offered:
  • Father's name "Hartley"
  • Mother's name "Paynter"

The deed specifies that offspring of the slave are to be given to his sisters, Elizabeth Heartly, Polly Bazzell [Brazzell], and Ritha Turner. The deed is witnessed by George H. Walker.

This deed is important evidence of relationships, specifying that Elijah is the son of Elizabeth Walker, that Elizabeth, Polly, and Ritha, are his sisters, and that George H., also her "beloved son" is his brother.

It is also evidence of who the three named girls married.

On the same date, Elizabeth Walker also made a Deed of gifts to her son, George H., leaving him a slave boy. Elijah Walker witnessed this deed.

Subsequently, Archalaus Walker came from Illinois an filed an objection in circuit court, ultimately prevailing. The Fisher abstraction:

"Walker, Elizabeth - Died before 7 April 1823 when Jacob Walker and George H. Walker were appointed administrators. (Dic TN, Co Ct Min, 2/no#) A suit was brought by Archibald Walker and others versus Elijah Walker. A jury found that Elizabeth Walker was not of sound mind on 29 January 1823 when she made a deed of gift to Elijah Walker. (Ibid, Cir Ct Min, 3/no#)"

The family lived in Dickson County in 1860, but Sarah was born in 1862, after her father had been surrendered at the Battle of Fort Donelson and sent to Camp Douglas in Chicago. The family may have moved over into Hickman County to be closer to Esther Elizabeth Thornton's family in her husband's absence. The family was enumerated in 1870 in Hickman County.

In any case, Sarah was probably born in either Dickson or Humphreys County.
