While most of the children of Jacob Walker and Agnes McLean were born in Tennessee, the son that would have been nearest in age to Aaron (if Aaron is indeed a child of Jacob), Archalus C. (born about 1818) also often reported a birthplace of Kentucky. If Aaron proves to be a son, the Jacob and Agnes are likely to have moved to Kentucky briefly, from about 1817-1819, reappearing in Dickson County, Tennessee, in time for the 1820 census enumeration.

While this looks like it SHOULD be the Winnie Parker who married Levi Walker, Winnie's death cert names her mother as Louise Pipkin. Wm. Parker married Minerva Tidwell in Dickson Co in 1833, and this must surely be them.

Additionally, Winnie's census enumerations consistently offer her mother's birthplace as North Carolina.

While Wilma died as "Wilma Abhiel," her father's obituary identified her as "Mrs. Herman Watkins" of Phoenix, Arizona. The other two daughters were clearly married to other people, and were listed, as well--so this had to be Wilma. Additionally, Wilma was known to be in Phoenix later, so this is very likely her, though no record has yet been found of the marriage.

Who was Myrtle Dora Hartley? Many family members believe she was the daughter of James W. "Wild Jim" Hartley and his third wife Mary Vaughan, born to them in 1881. This would make her second husband, George W. Hartley, her half-brother.

Myrtle's 1943 NC death certificate names her parents as "William Allen" and "Mary E. Vaughan." Missouri Marriages on Ancestry contains the marriage of a Mary E. Vaughan to William H. Allen in Moniteau County, on 19 October 1865. Was this her mother's first husband, whom she said was her father to hide the half-sibling relationship to her husband? Or was her father really William Allen?

William H. Walker's stated cause of death was "rheumatism." A little research indicates that the term was used for any sort of joint ailment.

The cemetery records, rendered orally, offered William's death date as 31 August 1902. However, the register clearly reflects a date of 3 August 1902.

William H. was listed in Richard Hartley's chronological listing of children in his Goodspeed biography, which specified that he was deceased. Since he was born between Ellen (1848) and Lorinda (1854), and does not appear in the 1870 census household, he probably died before 1870, and possibly in early childhood.

William is last seen in his family home in 1870. A William D. Walker married Louisa Page on 29 December 1870; this is possibly the same person.

Additionally, a database on Ancestry.com indicates that William married Louisa Page, and they had one son, Charles J. Page, born 16 December 1873, died 10 December 1928, Mariposa County, California. The same file indicates that Charles was married to Stella May Hesse.

William K. Walker purchased 63+ acres from George R. Wells, Section 13, Twp 2N, Rg 6E, for $1300 or $1400 (difficult to read). A few days later it was refiled (book 20: 497-498), exactly the same except for language added regarding overflows, flooding and swamp lands.

William K. Walker purchased land in 1867 from George R. Wells. The deed was rewritten and re-recorded a short time later to include reference to Swamp and Overflowed land rights.

George R. Wells was a trustee or otherwise involved with the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company, which oversaw the Comstock and other mines. As an (apparently) wealthy man, he was probably one of the many unscrupulous land speculators that took advantage of relationships with the land office of California. William was about 21 when the war started, and it would be unusual if he had not participated. A "William Crowell" appears as a private in Co. C, 48th Tennessee (Voorhies)--the same regiment that Helton Rutherford Walker was in. Most of this regiment was taken prisoner at Fort Donelson. I believe that those prisoners returned to active duty were then in the Voorhies portion of the 48th, while those who were never taken prisoner were in the Nixon portion of the 48th.

There appears, however, to have been an William H. Crowell in Dickson County, who could have been the one in the 48th TN rather than Wm S. Crowell.

Have ordered this compiled military service record via a researcher in Wash., D.C.

William's last known child, William, was born in 1890 in California (Bessie may have been born later, but her birth date is not known). In the 1900 census his wife Louisa (Page) was was enumerated as married; in the 1910 census she was eumerated as a widow. This could indicate that William was still living as late as 1900 and they were divorced after that date. It is equally possible that Louise did not know where William was and chose to characterize herself first as married and later as divorced.

Wm Wood's 1919 obituary indicates his marriage to Elizabeth Tatom "near Salem" after he returned from California and the Gold Rush (after 1949). Elizabeth's family arrived in October 1853 and it is likely that she was married soon after, possibly 1854. She had four children prior to 1859, the first, Columbus, born about 1855.

WorldConnect file indicates that Samuel A. Walker was born in "Amhurst" [Amherst], Virginia. The bio of Samuel's daughter Eliza says that he lived on the James River in Virginia. The James River does, indeed, run through Amherst County.

The same WorldConenct file indicates that Samuel's parents were Jacob Walker and Elizabeth Poage, attributed to Noble Sheatsley (tynwd@msn.com). An internet search reveals that Mr. Sheatsley is deceased.

A search on FamilySearch for Jacob Walker and Elizabeth Poage comes up dry, but a Jacob Walker was christened 3 February 1760 to Phillip Walker and Susannah Hilton, in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia.

This brings in the names Phillip, Jacob, and Hilton [Helton].

Year from cited family group sheet supports census data. The family's presence in Johnson County census in 1870 and 1880 implies the likelihood that Martha A. Chandler was born in Johnson County, though her 1941 death registry states that she was born in neighboring Floyd County. [Johnson County was created from Floyd County in 1843.]

[Difficult to explain Mary's presence in a home for the aged in Virginia, if indeed it is her, unless it had something to do with George W. Hartley being on the east coast. In any case, this Mary E. Kelley is the right age, and both of her parents were born in the right place.]

[R. Walker seems to be a good candidate to be Helton Rutherford Walker, who was often called "Rutherford." In support of this possibility:

  • Birthplace of Tennessee, is correct
  • On the following page is George H. Walker, HR's uncle, just a year or so older than HR's father Elijah. It is likely that "R. Walker" and "Geo H. Walker" were quite close in proximity.
  • Also on the page following "R. Walker" is "Jno M. Walker," a likely candidate to be HR's oldest brother "J. M. Walker." While the eldest brother is often named as "James Monroe Walker," the Bible data refers to him only as "J. M. Walker." Additionally, when this John M. Walker of Marshall County, Mississippi, is followed in census to his subsequent home in White County, Arkansas, his burial at Center Hill Baptist Cemetery, states his birth date as 18 September 1824--the exact date given for the birth of Elijah's eldest son "J. M. Walker."
  • HR was not married in 1850 and may have been trying out the possibility of moving to Marshall County, near his family.
  • HR is not found in his parents' household in Tennessee in this census, nor elsewhere in Humphreys or Dickson County
  • HR was enumerated in the next (1860) census as "R. Walker."
  • HR was commonly known later in life as "Rutherford Walker," lending further strength to the references to him as "R. Walker."
  • In conflict with the above, "R. Rutherford" is enumerated as age 20, calculating to a birth year of 1830. However, in terms of census age errors, that is minimal, particularly considering that William Pace may have guessed at his age for the enumerator.
