Came to VA from England. In 1641 Richard Preston received 250 acres for transporting five servants, including Edward "Ratcliffe" (also variously spelled Ratliff, Rackly, Racle, etc). On 21 April 1657 Edward Rackley patented 400 acres of land on the south side of the Rappahannock, behind land of John Gilliott, about 12 mi above Nnsemond Towne, Essex Co, VA. A Richard Rackley arrived in VA in the same year (1639), but no relationship is proven. Edward probably served his 7-year term with Preston. 1658 patented 640 acres New Kent Co, VA with neighbor Peter Ford. 1663 another 640 same county. | Rackley, Edward (I517)

Census data is inconclusive about the parentage of Martha J. Taylor. Although she is found in the home of John Taylor in the 1860 census, it is difficult to tell whether she is his daughter or the daughter of Alexander TAYLOR, age 26, in the same household. Both John and Alexander are born in TN; it is likely that Alexander is John's son. However, there is also a Mary J. Taylor, age 26, b IL, in the household. She must be the wife of either John or Alexander, and the mother of Martha J. Taylor. The order of listing in census would lead me to conclude that Mary J. , age 26, is married to John, age 46. I would further guess that Alexander, Riley and Nancy J. were from a previous marriage of John Taylor. They youngest three children, Martha J., 5, Luther B., 3, and Adena, 8/12 are probably the children of Mary J. and John Taylor. However, this is onlly a guess.
In the 1870 census, Martha J. Taylor is in the home of James K. P. Smith and his wife, Mary J., b IL. Evidently Mary J.'s husband has died and she has remarried. Neither John Taylor nor Alexander Taylor can be found in the 1870 census, so it is impossible to tell which of them died. Cemetery records have not been helpful in this regard.
In exchanging e-mail with a descendant of Martha's sister, Sarah A. TAYLOR; Sheryl Karlowski-Brown. Sheryl was in possession of the death certificate of Sarah A. TAYLOR, which listed her parents as John TAYLOR and Jane REECE. | Taylor, Martha Jane (I143)

Census data varies widely as to his age and calculated birth year. Most internet family trees give a date of 15 November 1863 for his birth. The Colton book gives the latter, as well.
Place of birth differs, as well. Often given as Hampden County, Massachusetts, but also seen as Iowa. His first two Kansas state census stated birthplace Iowa, as did his 1880 census in the home with his parents, offering an age of 16. It seems likely that he was born in Iowa.
His father's 1863 U.S. draft registration was in the 5th Congressional District of Iowa (representing 22 counties in the SW quadrant of Iowa), which supports his birth in Iowa.
