Mae's 1963 obituary offers a birth date of 6 February 1879 and her cemetery marker also gives a birth year of 1879. However, the 1880 census clearly states her age as 2, and she has a younger sister 9 months old. She was probably born in 1878, as demonstrated in that early census.

Mae's 1963 obituary states that she was married to "Mr. Tyson" in 1902. However, their 1911 marriage is on record in Jackson County, Missouri, and she was married as "May E. Jolley" of Jackson County in 1911; her husband named as David M. Tyson "of St. Clair County, Mich."

This marriage date was probably to make her eldest daughter, Violet, appear to be the legitimate child of David Tyson.
