Betsy Donald always said that she was seventeen when the family came to the United States, which would place their immigration at late 1888 or early 1889. Betsy's 1900 census indicates an immigration date of 1888, while that of her nearby siblings indicates 1889.

No record of their immigration has yet been found. Oral history says that they may have arrived in Galveston, which has few records for that period.
