"William J. Gilmore, Ex-OSC Prof, Dies
William James Gilmore, 74, passed away in Eureka, Calif.m, on April 17.
Mr. Gilmore, OSC professor emeritus, taught for 31 years and served s head of the agricultural engineering department. Following college retirement in 1946, he served four years in Kobe, Japan, as a director of army education under Gen. Douglas McArthur. In 1950 Professor and Mrs. Gilmore estableshed [sic] their home in Riverside, calif. During 1956 they sailed to Ireland and traveled throughout western Europe. After two years in Spain and the Canary Islands the moved to Switzerland, returning to California this spring.
He was born in Nevada, Iowa on August 8, 1884. He received degrees from Iowa State college in engineering in 1909 and agricultural engineering in 1911. He served on the faculty of the department of agricultural engineering at Manatoba Agricultural college in Canada for five years before coming to OSC.
Gilmore was a member of Calvary Presbyterian church of Riverside; the Masonic Lodge of Corvallis, and Scottish Rite Grand Consistory of Japan. He was affiliated with Phi Kappa Psi social fraternity.
Surviving are his wife Mrs. Faith C. Gilmore; daughter, Mrs. Geraldine F. Hofsted, grandson Jolyon G. Hofsted all of Eureka, and a sister, Mrs. Warren Burton of Whittier, Calif." |
