John Henry Goodman (July 24, 1865 - April 19, 1955) and Emma DeBoard (November 19, 1868 - March 19, 1928), New Zion Cemetery, came to Lincoln County from Mountain View, Missouri, in 1902.
John Henry rented a farm southeast of Chandler and was awaiting his Emma who was bringing the children: Bert, Elizabeth Goodman Coulter, Austin, Ola, Rufus, Grace Goodman Key, and Maude Goodman Hayes by train. John Henry had come by wagon, bringing their household essentials and animals.
The Goodman family stayed in Chandler about two years. They then went back to Mountain View because they thought the neighborhood they lived in, in Chandler, was too rough. In 1914 John Hnrey sold his farm in Mountain View and bought a farm near Chandler in the Banner School District, across the road, south from the school house. He rented this farm out for two years, while he rented a place on "the Better-Way," two miles east of Chandler, because it had better cotton land.
In 1916, John and the Goodmans moved onto the farm in the Banner district. John and his grown boys raised feed grain; made sorghum; and raised and butchered hogs for sale. He won prizes at the County Fair for his watermelons and had a large herd of Jersey cows.
On July 4 there was always a picnic in the grove south of the house where the "Goodman Families"- children and grandchildren, friends and a good part of the Banner community would meet for the first "Roasting Ear" cookout of the year. There would be games and prizes for young and old. The women worked for days making goodies to go with the "roasting ears" and one of the men was always delegated to go to town to get the ice for the real lemonade.
John Henry was a big man, well over six feet tall, and he liked to read big, spirited horses. In his later years, he could be seen riding his "Old Billy" to the town of Chandler and sitting with his cronies in Chandler until well into his 80's, when his horse acted up and his sons would not let him ride in parents any longer. He was 83 years old when his doctor told him "no more horseback riding - only ride in the car."
