    Born 1 Oct 1829  [1, 2
    • Possibly in County Sligo, Ireland.
    • Funeral home record states his age at death as 48; since he died a month before his birthday, that age is compatible with the known Bible record of his birth date.

James bought this property, filed 28 July 1858. In 1862, his father Thomas (and family) resided on it (gazetteer lists him on it). In 1871, Thomas and Mary were living on it, with their own children away from home, but with James' daughter Theresa. In 1881, Thomas and Mary were still probably living there; with them were Theresa and her Foreman husband.

    • Note on the transcription website:
"From medieval times it was required that notification of intention to marriage be given on three consecutive Sundays in church (called publishing the banns). But, as an alternative, members of the Church of Ireland could take out a Marriage Licence Bond. The parties lodged an amount of money with the Diocese to indemnify the Church against there being an obstacle to the marriage. This marriage by licence provided privacy, and was faster than the time taken to read the banns. It was considered more prestigious than having the banns read. The bonds themselves were destroyed in the Fires of 1922, but the indexes remain in the National Archives of Ireland. After 1845 marriages were registered by the State, and are available to researchers. This diocese is in Co. Mayo and Co. Sligo."
    Narrative
George W. Gilmore's pension file states that Thomas and Maria Gilmore had 10 children. When their names and dates were transcribed into the new family Bible, they only transcribed the names of those who were living. Nothing is known of the other three children.

      Hello Janis Walker Gilmore,

It appears that we are related somehow. I have not taken the time to figure it all out. My Great Grandmother is Theresa Forman (Gilmore). From what I have pieced together great grandma was raise by her grandmother and grandfather, Jas and Mary Gilmore ( located in Oxford County). I have yet to try and find the burial cemetery but I believe it is Otterville (near Paris, Woodstock, Ontario).
Great Grandma was born in 1856 and passed away March 18, 1957 a few days short of her 101st birthday. She had five children. Clara Amelia Forman (Bridges) is my grandmother.

Back to great grandmother, I understand she lived with her grandparents starting at the age of 2-4. Her father and mother, Jas Gilmore and Eliza Sommers lives are difficult to trace. There are rumors that they died either through a contagious disease, or where killed somehow or moved to the United States and I?m not sure where. I haven?t been able to find a reliable source of information to know what actually happened.

Theresa married Wallace David Forman who is from New York. He worked on ?New York -- Central Railway?. The rail cars were ferried across the St Clair River from Marine City, Michigan (USA) to Courtright (near Sarnia) and ended up in Toronto. I imagine that is how they met when he was passing through Oxford. They lived on a farm outside Inwood, located in Lambton County, Ontario, Canada. They had 5 children ? Elwood, Melvin, Roy, Clara, Ralph.

Sorry I do not know this Thomas or any other of the siblings. As far as I know there was Jas Gilmore (Senior) ( born- 1803?) and then son Jas Gilmore (Junior) ( died 1858?) . According to records Gilmore could have 2 ?LL?s? or 1 ?L?.

That?s about as far as I have traced my history in this part of the family . I hope this helps

      Yours truly,
      Wray Lamb

      Janis,

Maybe the Thomas?s full name was Thomas James Gilmore and they called him ?Jas?. I have several references to that name. From your information his wife?s name ? Mary ? seems to match. My records show Jas Gilmore ( born 1803 ? buried -- -- (year????) Norwich South, Oxford, Ontario) --- Mary Gilmore ( maiden name ???? -- you indicated ? Reid?) ( born 1808 ? buried ( year??) --Norwich South, Oxford South, Ontario) which I believe is one of the cemeteries in Otterville, Ontario. I have some bible history and then what I have found on line?ancestery.ca plus other websites.

As far as Theresa she lived to be almost 101 (born: 1856 d: 1957) is buried in Alvinston Cemetery ( Lambton County, Ontario) . Her husband Wallace David Forman died from a heart attack ( born 1854?d: 1921) and is buried in the Alvinston Cemetery. For a number of years Theresa and her bachelor son ?Elwood? lived on the farm near Inwood. Sorry to say they lost the farm due to tax nonpayment in the late 1940?s or early 1950?s. Elwood come and lived with us for short time ( I remember that) while Theresa lived with other son Melvin until her death.

Do you have any more info on James and Eliza (Sommers) who are Theresa birth parents??? Like I said I?m not sure what happened to them..
No I have not been DNA tested and I?m not sure what that would gain. So not sure on this one.

When you ask about other extend family members ? what do you mean? Because you end up in a lot of different trees when start expanding to the children?s connections. Other than great grandma ( parents and grandparents) I have no information on the rest of the Gilmore family connections.

      Cheers
      Wray

      Janis,

What detail. I did my research about 10 years ago and of course run into brick walls and my access to ancestery.ca run out. Plus, I pretty well came to the conclusion that I had to start investigating by visiting the actual sites/locations to further my records. So I had to dig out the books again just to review my memory of the information I had collected.
We can debate whether Gillmore is two ?L? or 1 ?L?
Maria Theresa Gilmore ( Gillmore) was born July 10, 1856, Ontario Canada?died March 17, 1957 buried in Alvinston, Ontario.
Wallace David Forman was born September 3, 1854, England --- died MAR 20,1921 buried in Alvinston, Ontario ( There are many Forman?s when I searched New York data but I have no record of when they migrated from England to New York,USA). ( He worked on the New York Central Railway and came to Canada when they expand their rail service.)
Parents--- James H Gillmore---- born Oct 1 1829 Sligo, Ireland ---- Died Sept 1913 where???? ( They likely came to Canada with his parents when ????)
Eliz Ann Sommers--- born July 13 1832 Ireland --- Died August 22 1858 Ontario Canada ( I did not realize that I had this information until I looked at my records)
Grand parents --- James ( Jas) Gillmore ? Born 1803 ( suspect it is Ireland??? -- Died Year??? Norwick South Oxford, Ontario -- When they migrated to Canada ??????
---- Mary Gillmore ? ( as you indicated maiden name ? Reid) born 1808 ( suspect Ireland ????) -- Died Year??? Norwick South, Oxford, Ontario
--- suspect both grandparents are buried in Otterville, Ontario but I need to go to the cemetery to confirm that if I can read the tombstones but maybe the cemetery has records

We drive passed the roads that lead to Otterville on numerous trips to see other family ( Ottawa to Sarnia trip via 401) . However the car ride is 8-9 hours so If we stop and explore then that would add 3-4 hours so it would make it a very long day or you would have to book in for the night. But one of these days it will happen.

I know this a repeat of some of the information that I already sent to you. But this is as far as I have taken it. I found by going to all family members that the files, dates, relationships got too confusing so I mainly concentrated on the my direct family line ( unless I run into a brick wall). You should try and research the ?Lamont? clan out of Scotland which the Lamb family is a member. The paths are very broken over the course of history. Dead ends every time you turn around.

Hope this helps but it looks like you have more information on the Gilmores than I do.

      Janis

I looked in the family bible and I have the actual funeral cards and some paper clippings of their deaths and all they talk about is where they lived and living members of their family ( children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren)? There is nothing referring to their parents.

The other information I will have to search for. I imagine that I found it on ancestry.ca. However I can?t get to my online family tress without taking out a new membership for 3,or 6 or 12 months.

I will have to get back to you. We have a busy week ahead so I?m time is going to be limited.

    • Email, 29 May 2015, from research librarian, Elgin County, Merrill Taylor (mtaylor@elgin.ca):

      Dear Janis,

      Thank you for your email.

Unfortuneately, the newspapers that I have access to do not go back far enough for James but I did look up variations of Gilmour in St. Thomas Daily Times ( 1883 - 1900 ) and St. Thomas Times-Journal and other St. Thomas papers (1901 -1960; post 1960 in progress) with no success.

      I did find Gillmore, James, 20 Sept 1878, 49 (name, year,page) under Evenden Funeral Home Index 1873 - 1884

I did find a picture of the "Thomas Williams House"
https://www.flickr.com/photos/elgincountyarchives/8652591644/ information on the "Thomas Williams House" in St. Thomas ON

I did find where Emeline was buried.

Gilmour, Emeline TWHL died Mar. 1, 1901
      St. Thomas West Cemetery
      Additional Burials from cemetery records
BURIALS WITHOUT MONUMENTS and ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM BURIAL REGISTERS
In addition to the transcription of the monuments in this cemetery, information was gathered by the late Max Doan from a booklet published by the Elgin Historical Society: St. Thomas Cemetery - A List of All Burials From 1869 to 1889. Information for later years was also obtained from the Cemetery Office.
Please note that some of the following names may have monuments in the cemetery, but additional information was found, such an exact date of death or burial.
The second column refers to the section of the cemetery in which the burial is located. The number that follows that letter refers to the lot number within that section. It appears that the Section identification and the lot number do not always correspond with the Section and Stone Number found in the Elgin OGS transcriptions.
The abbreviation "SG" indicates the location of the burial is in the section called "Strangers and Babies Ground" of this cemetery. The abbreviation "TWHL" refers to "Thomas Williams Home Lot".

A couple of sites you might find of interest ...
http://www.elginogs.ca/Home where on the left hand side you can click on ancestor indexes to find newpaper, cemetery and funeral records.
http://www.elgincounty.ca/archives most likely could assist as well.
