Truss enlisted on this date, Co. A, 135th U.S. Colored Troop. See article of 19 March 2018, The Laurinburg Exchange, "Civil War Soldier Descendants Sought. Details that Sherman's March picked up many blacks around Bennettsville and environs who traveled with him to Fayetteville and then on to Goldsboro, laying road in front to keep them moving. In Goldsboro they were formed into the 135th USCT and issued blue uniforms with brass eagle buttons. They marched in the Grand Review before President Lincoln under their own regimental flag in May 1865, This article says they were the only "colored troop" in the Grand Parade.

Additional info states that it was changed to "Mack's Town" for all the "Mc" and "Mac" surnames--like McRae, the white family that Tristram Leggett was affiliated with. The "Mack's Town" evolved into "Maxton."
