Obituary:
"Mrs. Nancy Burns
After a two weeks' illness of pneumonia, and other complications, Mrs. Nancy Burns died Tuesday, April 20, at the home of he daughter, Mrs. John Tyler, on Monroe avenue. Mrs. Burns had been in failing health for the last three years and three times within that period her condition had been so serious that her recovery was doubtful. She was 70 years old.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Tyler home, Rev. J. S. Jesse, pastor of the Baptist Church, officiating. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends, their number giving evidence of the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Interment was in Lebanon cemetery.
Nancy Bolles was born at Crossroads, Tennessee, September 4, 1844. She was a daughter of Reuben Bolles and the family lived for a time in Illinois, coming to Missouri in 1855 and locating in Laclede County. She was married in November, 1869, to John G. Burns, and lived the remainder of her life in Lebanon and vicinity. Mr. Burns died in February, 1890.
Mrs. Burns was the mother of eight children, of whom the following survive her: Mrs. Pear Tyler, Mrs. J. A. Johnson and Mrs. R. M. Miller, all of Lebanon; Henry Burns, of Ottawa, Kansas, and Harlan Burns, of Coffeyville, Kansas. All were present at the funeral.
Mrs. Burns was one of eleven children and the only surviving one is a sister, Mrs. Jane Atchley, a well known resident of the Candock neighborhood.
Mrs. Burns had been a member of the Baptist Church since 1867.
A mother in Israel who lived her life as God gave her the light to see it, has gone to the reward assured to the good and faithful servants of the Lord here. After a long life of Christian endeavor, filled with kind and good deeds, actuated by a tender heart, she passed into the valley of the shadow of death sustained by a simple trust in the promises of her religion and by the tender affection of her children. While her death was the natural consequence of age and illness and was not unexpected, her going leaves many sorrowing hearts, though she, indeed, went into her long sleep like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams. A goo woman, a gentle, kindly character, and above all, a sweet home spirit, was Mrs. Nancy Burns, known for so many years as the best of neighbors, most conscientious of Christians and most loyal of friends. May her continuing life be perfect, peaceful and happy." |
