John was on furlough from his unit, and therefore missed being taken prisoner when Fort Donelson fell.
    Military 1 Jan 1863  [4
John was a fifer (musician) in Co. B, 42nd Tenn. Inf. (probably reassigned after most of his unit was taken prisoner at Donelson). In January 1863 he was made chief musician of his regiment.
    Military 16 Jul 1863  [4, 5
On this date John L. Temple deserted his regiment. In August, probably of the same year (the record is missing the year) he was captured at Corinth, Mississippi. The notation was "passed home."

Craig Scott, genealogist and military expert, believes this indicates that he was captured by the Union army after he deserted the Confederates, that he took the oath of allegiance to the U.S., and was sent through the lines back home.
