William Hartley has not been located in the 1860 census. He was married in Cedar County, Missouri, the following year, so it seems likely that he should appear there.
    Migration 1864  [6
In 1864 William C. Hartley and his wife, Eliza Ann Paynter, joined "McPike's train" of 30 or 40 wagons and travelled from Missouri to Boise. The train went on to Oregon, but the William Hartley family remained in Boise. A great 1914 article in the Boise Statesman (see transcription below) interviewed Eliza Ann (Paynter) Hartley about the trip West with her husband, and about their first log cabin in Boise. It is likely that William's brother Henry K. Hartley and his wife, Sarah Jane Paynter, were in the same wagon train, but traveled on with it to Oregon; their daughter Florence was born in Oregon about 1865. Sarah Jane (Paynter) Hartley and Eliza Ann (Paynter) Hartley were sisters, married to brothers.

William Hartley Crosses Plains in Early Days:
His Company Lead Charmed Lives Passing Through Indian Country

One of the interesting pioneers of the early '60's is Mrs. E. A. Dobson, who, as the wife of William Hartley, came to Idaho from Missouri, in '64.
The Hartleys, together with a number of others started for Oregon. Tehre were 30 or 40 wagons in their train, nown as McPike's train, and their trip was somewhat unusual in that it was devoid of accident. There were Indians before them and Indians behind them, but the train met none of them. They came across graves which had been made only the day before, Mrs. Dobson said, me or women who had been killed by the Indians, they heard of trouble in trains ahead and those which followed, but they seemed to bear a charmed existence.

    Good Enough for Them

When they reached the present site of Boise, many in the train decided that this country was good enough for them, and refused to go further. The Hartleys were in the number and they settled on the spot which is now known as Collister.
Mrs.Dobson, in relating stories of her early experiences, said, "Wait till I show you the house of which I was most proud. I have lived in a number of good houses in my life time, but over none was I as proud as over this, my first real house in Idaho," and she brought out a picture of her pioneer dwelling.

When This Old House Was New

"This picture does not do the house justice," said Mrs. Dobson, "since it was taken after we had been using it for a barn, and had a much better house, but I was so attached to it, that I had a picture taken by the first photographer who came through. You will see that the window to the left of the door is boarded up in the picture and the chimney is falling down, but when that log house was new, with the attractive old fire place, the windows roughly hewn, and a dirt floor, it looked pretty good to me."
This house was at Dixie, near where Caldwell now is located, long before the city of that name was even thought of.
Mr. Hartley was a stock man and died about 15 years after coming west. Mr. Dobson, Mrs. Hartleys second husband has been dead 35 years. Mrs. Dobson owns a fine ranch in Stewart's gulch, which is now being managed by her son, Clinton Hartley. There are cold and warm springs on this ranch and the water is piped into the house. She has two other children, Charles F. Hartley, who lives near Star, and Mrs. Elizabeth Meek of Caldwell. She makes her home in Boise where she is surrounded by pioneer friends with whom she enjoys many pleasant hours spent in memories of the past.
