Name |
John M. Walker [1, 2] |
Born |
18 Sep 1824 |
Tennessee, USA [1, 3, 4, 5] |
Despite the fact that so many databases name him as "James M. Walker," it begins to appear that the John M. Walker found in the 1850 Marshall County, Mississippi, census, who married Rachel D. Barnett, and who is later found in White County, Arkansas--could be the same man as the "J. M. Walker" listed as the eldest son of Elijah Walker and his first wife, Matilda.
The name "James M. Walker" may have come from the Charles Bowen typescript, which contains many errors (as well as much good information) and is not sourced.
In favor of this:
- Both the Collins Walker and the McMillan Gaelic Bible list him only as "J. M. Walker," with a birthdate of 18 September 1824.
- Marshall County, Mississippi, where he was found in 1850, was the county where Elijah's elder brother George H. resided from abt 1834 until his death after 1870. The two were enumerated on the same page. On the previous page of the same census was "R. Walker," an apparent laborer--possibly Helton Rutherford Walker, who is not found in Tennessee in 1850
- John M. and Rachel D. (Barnett) Walker are found in the 1870 White County, Ark, census. Rachel's parents, Zimmer and Emeline Barnett are found there as well. All four are buried in the Center Hill Baptist Church cemetery.
- The birth date given on John M. Walker's stone in the Center Hill Baptist Church is 18 September 1824--the same as the birthdate given for J. M. Walker in the Walker Bibles
This would seem to be a strong indication that the identities of James Monroe Walker from the Walker Bibles and John M. Walker who married Rachel D. Barnett can be merged.

Carded record Vicksburg 8 Dec
Period "During the War"
March-April 1948 "Sick in Military Hospital Tampico"
Reasons I believe this is the right John M. Walker:
- Enlisted at Hernando, DeSoto County, right next to Marshall Co, where he is found in 1850 census and was married the same year.
- Although there are a number of John Walker's in Marshall Co in 1850, there is only one John M. Marshall--the one married to Rachel Barnett.
- There are no John Walkers in DeSoto Co in 1850.
- Age is about right--22 on the card dated Nov and Dec of 1847, calculating to a birth year of 1825--just one year off.

1. Walker, Jno. [possibly Jms?] M., 25, male, farmer, Tennessee
2. _____, Rachel D., 16, female, Tennessee
[Next door to the Zimri Barnett household]
Though this person's name appears to be "Jno M." or probably "John M. Walker," it could be interpreted as Jms--remotely. [See digital image of census.]

White Co ARK, deed book F:774, John M. Walker to Marcus Stewart.
Entered in index, page missing? Have asked Rick to doublecheck. Year uncertain, but that vol. covers 1857-1872, probably toward the latter end of that spread.
Rick thought perhaps it was just a microfilming problem at the end of the roll. Have contact APG list to find researcher, and have contacted White Co Hist Soc to see if they know of someone who can check the original deed. |

No record of Elijah's first marriage has been located. Although Dickson County marriage records begin in 1817, a tornado on 30 May 1830 decimated the county seat of Charlotte, severely damaging the courthouse, and resulting in record loss.
- Elijah's first child,"J. M." (John M.), was born on 18 September 1824
- Elijah is probably one of the two males found in the 1820 census household of Elizabeth Walker
- In January 1824 Elijah Walker and wife, the "former Matilda King" appointed William Shelby as their representative in legal actions in Sullivan County, where Matilda's father died about 1814.
.
The marriage probably occurred about 1823 in Dickson County.
