Name |
Alonzo Nichols |
Born |
Dec 1870 |
Marion County, South Carolina, USA [1] |
The 1900 census gives Alonzo birth as December 1870. The 1910 and 1930 census are consistent with this. The 1920 census calculates to a birth year of 1874.
Alonzo's death certificate gives a birth date far out of line with all of these, as 1884. It's likely that the informant, his son, was just wrong.
Birthplace from death certificate.

Parents |
Alonzo's death certificate names his parents as Isaac Nichols and Mary Grainger. Informant was son Alonzo Nichols, Jr.
No Isaac Nichols is found in the 1900 Marion County census. The 1880 census offers only one Isaac Nichols, age 40, a widower living in LeGette township, which makes him a good candidate to be Alonzo?s father. Alonzo, who would have been about ten years old, is not found in the home; the nearest match is Willie, age 14. [See PN-18]
In the 1870 census, two Isaac Nichols households appear in Marion County. The first is Isaac Nichols, age 12, in Hillsboro township, who may be tentatively discounted as a parental candidate, due to his youth and his location; he is, however, listed as head of small
household, with a younger brother, age 10.
The second is the same Isaac Nichols found in the 1880; in 1870 he was enumerated in LeGette township, at age 27 with a wife ? not Mary, but Nancy.
There was also a white planter in Marion County named Isaac Nichols.
No Mary Grainger is found in the 1870 census, nor any black Grainger families in Marion County, though there were a number of them quite nearby over the line into Horry County. |
