  	William was about 21 when the war started, and it would be unusual if he had not participated. A "William Crowell" appears as a private in Co. C, 48th Tennessee (Voorhies)--the same regiment that Helton Rutherford Walker was in. Most of this regiment was taken prisoner at Fort Donelson. I believe that those prisoners returned to active duty were then in the Voorhies portion of the 48th, while those who were never taken prisoner were in the Nixon portion of the 48th. There appears, however, to have been an William H. Crowell in Dickson County, who could have been the one in the 48th TN rather than Wm S. Crowell. Have ordered this compiled military service record via a researcher in Wash., D.C.
