A Bad Man Gone
E. T. Beard, a notorious dance-house keeper at Wichita, died a few days ago from wounds received in a row in his house some two week since. The Eagle says Beard was formerly from Beardstown, Ill., which place was laid out and named after his father, who was wealthy. He was well educated, and had a Christian training. He has three children, two daughters and a son, nearly grown, who are now attending school somewhere in the east, and know nothing of their father's wild life in the west. He was about 45 years of age, straight as an arrow, red hair, which fell in a profusion of curls upon his shoulders. Beard remarked to his physician before his death that he followed the disreputable business only in the hopes of getting a start in the world agaid [sic], but if he got over his wounds he would never go in side of a dance house again. |

"Red"
James Kelly, the editor of the Winfield Courier, who was in Wichita the day "Red" who was buried, was acquainted, with the desperado in his early life, and in his paper makes the following interesting note:"Red was none other than Ed. Beard, whose father gave to Beardstown, Cass county, Illinois, his name. We remember Ed. Beard as a jolly, rollicking young man, without a single bad trait in his make up. He married an estimable young lady near Virginia, Cass county. The writer of this article met "Red" last July at Wichita, for the first time since he left Illinois, ten or twelve years ago. He then gave us his solemn promise that so soon as the Texas "season" was over, he would abandon forever his wild, infamous life. The next time we saw him was in his coffin, and while we stood and gazed on that lifeless clay, going back in thought to his wild, reckless life for the last twelve years, in California, Oregon and Arizona, where his name was a terror to everybody, we could hardly convince ourselves that this was the handsome, jovial, gifted Ed. Beard. Verily, the way of the transgressor is hard. Peace to his ashes." |

RESEARCH |
Received from Ann Boll, Ancestry message, 8 April 2017. Suggestions for further research.
Hi, Janis! I think Deborah is the daughter of George Hill and sister of William Hill, too. Deborah married Edward T. "Red" Beard on 29 May 1856 in LaSalle County, IL. As you noted, they were living in Macoupin County at the time of the 1860 census. The 1865 Kansas census shows the Beard family living in Leavenworth, KS, Edward's occupation is listed as 'teamster.' In the 1870 census, Deborah and their daughters are living in Pleasant Hill, Cass County, MO, while "Red" is nowhere to be found in the census. It's about this time that life gets interesting for Red Beard... you'll need to Google Rowdy Joe Lowe and Red Beard to get the full story. I would recommend the book "Rowdy Joe Lowe: Gambler with a Gun" by Joseph G Rosa, it has the most complete and accurate story I've found. Red Beard's probate file on Ancestry is also quite interesting and informative. After Red Beard's death, Deborah and the girls moved to Wichita to salvage what they could from her husband's estate. Apparently Deborah never divorced him, so she inherited what little he owned although his mistress, Josephine DeMerritt, tried to forge documents saying he had deeded the dance hall over to her. Deborah died in 1906 in Wichita and is buried next to Red Beard in Highland Cemetery in Wichita.
I am no relation to any of these people - I am just fascinated by the characters that inhabited early Wichita before 1900. I've been collecting research for about 15 years now in the hope I can write a book about some of them after I retire later this year. They are definitely not boring!!
Let me know if there is anything specific you would like for me to share with you!
