Personal Information    |    Media    |    Notes    |    Sources    |    All    |    PDF

  • Name Jacob R. Walker  [1, 2
Born 7 Apr 1852  Humphreys County, Tennessee, USA Find all individuals with events at this location  [1, 3, 4, 5
    • His family was located in Humphreys County at the time of the 1850 census, near the Dickson County border; by 1860 the county line had moved and the Elijah Walker farm was once more in Dickson County. Jacob may have been born in either county.
    Gender Male
Census 11 Jul 1860  Dickson County, Tennessee, USA Find all individuals with events at this location  [4

    1. Walker, J. R., white, male, 28, married, rafting timber, unemployed two months, cannot read or write, Tennessee, "don't know," Tennessee
    2. _____, Mary, white, female, 17, married, keeping house, cannot read or write, Missouri, "don't know," "don't know"
    • This census fits Jacob R. Walker in several ways:

      • Jacob R. married in 1891 to as "J. R." i

      • This "J. R." was born in Tennessee in abt 1852

      • New Madrid County, Missouri, is quite near Izard County, Arkansas, where Jacob was living by 1891

      • Jacob is reputed to have left Tennessee after the end of the Civil War, when he got into some undefined trouble

      Conflicting with this possibility:

      • J. R.'s wife Mary in the 1880 census could not be the same Mary A. who was married to Jacob R. Walker; her age and birthplace are not compatible. Additionally, we know that Jacob R. Walker married Mary A. Ferguson in 1891, Sharp County, Arkansas

      • Jacob's 1910 Izard County census states that he is in his first marriage

Despite the conflicting data, this still seems like a strong possibility.
Residence Jan 1891  Rockford, Izard County, Arkansas, USA Find all individuals with events at this location  [7
Although Jacob R. Walker was married in Sharp County, Arkansas, the marriage license indicates that he was a resident of Izard County, as was his bride.
Census 19 Jun 1900  Jefferson township, Izard County, Arkansas, USA Find all individuals with events at this location  [8
    1. Walker, Jacob R., head, white, male, October 1851, 48, married 9 years, Tennessee, Tennessee, Tennessee, well-driller, can read and write, renting house
    2. _____, Mary A., wife, white, female, August 1868, 31, married 9 years, 2 children 2 living, North Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina, can read and write
    3. _____, Luther, son, white, male, May 1892, 8, single, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, did not attend school this year
    4. _____, Oscar, son, white, male, Nov 1893, 6, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina
    • Jacob's birthdate in this census is in conflict with the Jacob R. Walker, son of Elijah Walker. However, the Izard County Jacob R. Walker has a cemetery stone with the 7 April 1852 birthdate, indicating that this census data is erroneous.

It appears that the Jacob Walker family may have been enumerated as a separate family within the household of the previous family, that of George W. Ferguson, age 55, born in North Carolina--the likely father of Jacob's wife, Mary A. Ferguson.

The household and dwelling numbers have been crossed out and re-entered in this section, so their status in the same dwelling is not clear. If not in the same household, they are certainly living next to one another.

  • Notes
    • (Research):Ordered death certificate on 21 June 2006. Received the wrong death certificate (for a black child named Jacob Walker). Ordered in a second time in 2009 and received a call from the Arkansas office for vitals. They were most cooperative and made a great effort, but no death certificate could be located.
    • Note in Aunt Della's materials indicates that Jacob went to Texas.
    • Bowen's typescript indicates that Jake "ran away as a young man" and was "lost from his family for quite a long time."

Bowen states that Jacob had a first wife and three children before marrying Lou Walker and having two children, Oscar and May, in Izard County, Arkansas. His life in Arkansas is documented from 1891. His life between 1860 and 1891 remains a mystery.

His family has not been located in the 1870 census, so it is not clear at what age he left home.
