Quoted from Debra J. Brannon's register report:Effie was a schoolteacher, genealogist, historian, and "practical nurse," who graduated from Curtis [Nebraska] Normal College. She was an accomplished Bridge player. Effie taught school in the Nebraska Sandhills in McPherson County prior to her marriage to Claude Lawyer. Claude was a ranch foreman and retired as a conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad in North Platte in 1966. Claude and Effie were active in the Masonic organizations: Claude was a Nebraska York Rite Mason and member of Platte Valley Lodge, AF&AM. Effie was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and an officer and charter member of the Social Order of Beauceant. Claude and Effie were members of First United Methodist Church and Effie served as president of her UMW circle. Effie received North Platte?s ?Good Neighbor Award? and devoted endless hours of service to her community, church and family. Claude and Effie (Gilmore) Lawyer had one child." [2] |

Effie V. Lawyer, 86, of 420 W. Fourth, died Sunday at a North Platte nursing home. She was born Jan. 2, 1901, at Centralia, Ill., to Thomas M. and Edith Holcomb Gilmore.
She moved at an early age with her family to Atwood, Kan., and in 1912, the family moved to a homestead in McPherson County under the Kincaid Act. Upon completing her education, she taught the county's District 21 school. She married Claude D. Lawyer Dec. 18, 1923, and they farmed in McPherson County and ran the store at Thune until 1927 when they moved to North Platte.
She was active in community affairs and was the recipient of the Good Neighbors Service Award. She was the author of a history of Valyrang School District 15 and contributed many historical articles to the McPherson County Historical Book published in 1986.
Mrs. Lawyer was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Signet Chapter 55 Order of Eastern Star, Ladies Auxiliary to Union Pacific Old-timers No. 8 and charter member of the Social Order of the Beauceant Assembly no. 177.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen (Mrs. Robert) Brannan of North Platte; two brothers, Ben Gilmore of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Bill Gilmore of North Hilands, Calif.; a sister, Thelma (Mrs. Glen) Crampton of Lancaster, Calif.; and one granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband on March 16, 1973, three sisters and four brothers.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery. |
