"Wm Walker" appears next to "Elisha Walker" in the Dickson County tax list, with no acreage, and one white poll. William would have turned 21 in October 1855, making him responsible for the poll tax.
    • A "William" or "Wm" Walker does not appear in the 1855 Dickson County tax record for District 2, nor does he appear in the 1858 or later tax records. He appears only in the first year after turning 21. This agrees with the statement of William K. Walker of San Joaquin County, California, that he arrived in California in 1857.

    • William K. Walker purchased 63+ acres from George R. Wells, Section 13, Twp 2N, Rg 6E, for $1300 or $1400 (difficult to read). A few days later it was refiled (book 20: 497-498), exactly the same except for language added regarding overflows, flooding and swamp lands.

    • 1. Flanigan, J. R., 38, male, white, brick maker, Georgia
      2. Walker, W. [K.? N.?], 26, male, white, farmer, real estate value $3,000, personal $500, Missouri
      3. Butler, G. R., 22, male, white, clerk, Ohio

[This "W. Walker" is precisely the right age for the subject William Walker, age 26, calculating to a birth year of 1834. The birth place given is Missouri, but the information may have come from someone else in the household. William's older sister Cassie (Walker) Lasater lived in Dade County, Missouri; it is possible that he went from Tennessee to her home in Missouri, then joining a wagon train from Missouri for California. He also had an uncle (by marriage) and a number of cousins in Polk and Cedar counties of Missouri (the Hartleys, the family of Elijah's deceased sister Elizabeth). Several of the Hartleys went west, and William might also have visited them prior to heading for California.

The middle initial is not perfectly legible, but could be a "K."

He was married to Bridget in 1870, and they had 2-year-old William H. Walker and George H. Walker would be born three or four months later. Could Bridget have been staying with family somewhere? Could William have been building a house or something on their place?]

    • The Stockton Mail, 19 October 1888

      HORRIBLY SCALDED
A Baby Falls Into a Kettle of Boiling Brine
Calvin, the three-year-old son of W. K. Walker, was frightfully scalded on Wednesday last at the parents' residence on Channel street, near Aurora, by falling into a kettle of boiling brine which the cook had just removed from the stove. The child stumbled over it while walking backwards, sitting down in it and splashing the brine over its body and legs, and the skin came off in large patches. The burns are so extensive that there is doubt whether the baby will recover. Drs. Harkness and Gibbons are in attendance.

RESEARCH WK\'s death notice states his service will take place from his home on Channel St between Grant and Aurora. 825 E. Channel Street in Stockton is a big white house, looks old, and is between Aurora and Grant, now divided into apartments. I wonder what the age of this house is and if it could have been his?

The 1888 directory gives his address as 376 Channel Street. Which wouldn't presently be between Aurora and Grant, so the numbers have changed.

    • No record of Elijah's first marriage has been located. Although Dickson County marriage records begin in 1817, a tornado on 30 May 1830 decimated the county seat of Charlotte, severely damaging the courthouse, and resulting in record loss.

      • Elijah's first child,"J. M." (John M.), was born on 18 September 1824
      • Elijah is probably one of the two males found in the 1820 census household of Elizabeth Walker
      • In January 1824 Elijah Walker and wife, the "former Matilda King" appointed William Shelby as their representative in legal actions in Sullivan County, where Matilda's father died about 1814.
      .
The marriage probably occurred about 1823 in Dickson County.

  • Notes
    • Email from Charlie Lamberen, San Joaquin County Genealogical Society, January 2007:

Janis W Gilmore I'm responding to your e-mail regarding the Walker Family. To give you an idea of what we do is simple searches, by that I mean we can copy information from Birth ,Marriage ( for marriage we need both individuals names) or Death Records at the county recorders office for San Joaquin County, or get copies of obituaries from our local newspaper in Stockton, CA. I do not look up probate records, as that information is located at the superior court and can take several visits to get the information if it's available, and lots of waiting time. For those who want to go in this direction I would provide you with the address and let you acquire that information by mail. You will have to be very specific with names and dates. I understand they charge a look up fee of $7 and 50 cents per copy. I also do not look up deeds as this also is very time consuming, and without actual dates of property purchase or sale there are many volumes of records to research.

For those who want to get down and dirty, I can direct you to a middle person who can put you in contact with professional researches for our area. And if you have looked at any older Death Records at the recorders office you will understand that back in the late 1800's, there may only be one line showing very little information. And for obituaries they are almost nonexistent back in the late 1800's. It may only indicate that so and so died. No family information. With that in mind I have spent a couple of hours looking through our library and a few internet sites I can get into and a trip to Rural Cemetery and provide you with the following information: William K Walker married a Bridget Dolan on September 3, 1867 in San Joaquin County, CA Buried in Rural Cemetery, Stockton CA are: William K Walker buried November 5, 1888 age 53 Bridget Walker " April 13, 1884 age 45 William H Walker " August 3, 1902 age 34 he died single I found that most of the time the buried date is the death date back in the 1800's. I went by Rural Cemetery and tried to find their other kids but none of the them matched born years you provided from the 1880 census and died dates they had on file. I did find: George F Walker born 1870 and died April 4, 1939, he is buried at San Joaquin Cemetery which is a catholic cemetery. He married a G. Nellie Welch on October 28, 1902 in San Joaquin Co., she was born abt 1883 in California. Their children, were all born in San Joaquin County

R Melvin was born abt 1904 G Lila was born March 29, 1907 B Madeline no idea of birth date Everett Francis was born June 12, 1910 and died February 24, 1988, San Joaquin County George H was born October 26, 1912 Ralph W (could be William) was born October 18, 1915 There may be other children and you understand they may not have lived or died in San Joaquin county, after their parents died.

One of my guesses is that Robert Walker died in Sacramento County and Monty or Montgomery died in Glenn County!!!

At least I've provided you with some data. We do charge a fee for look up's as I first mention. I wouldn't be able to tell you how much it will be until you let me know what you want me to copy or obit look ups. I'll leave it up to you to let me know.

You say you're headed toward Salt Lake City. I've heard that you really have to be organized when you go to the library. We've never done research there, but I don't think we could handle it. We've been to Sutro Library and that's confusing enough.

When you're ready you can contact me at: Charlie Lambaren - research e-mail melrlamb@juno.com San Joaquin Gen Society

      Janis

So here goes as to where to get information, but first let me mention you have such unusual first names such as: George, Charles, Robert, and Monty or Montgomery!!!!!!!!!!!. I found you site on Rootsweb and see what you mean about Humphreys and Dickson Counties.

      • 1880 Chico, Butte Co CA census, b abt 1832 in Illinois, carpenter, parents born Alabama, wife Elizabeth J born abt 1835 Ohio
      • 1870, Butte Co CA census, b abt 1832 Illinois, carpenter, wife Elizabeth J., real estate valued at $1800
      • 1860 may be the Cleveland Walker in the Oregon Penintentiary, born abt 1834 Ohio, mechanic, serving time for "?assisting in escape of a convict?
      • Can't locate him in the 1850 census
      • Appears in 1910 San Joaquin Co census, in the home of cobbler James P. Whitney, born about 1833, Illinois, parents born in Alabama, married, second marriage, length about 22 years--so married in about 1888 (Elizabeth J. must have died?)

This could be coincidence, or it could be a good lead.

    • William K. Walker purchased land in 1867 from George R. Wells. The deed was rewritten and re-recorded a short time later to include reference to Swamp and Overflowed land rights.

George R. Wells was a trustee or otherwise involved with the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company, which oversaw the Comstock and other mines. As an (apparently) wealthy man, he was probably one of the many unscrupulous land speculators that took advantage of relationships with the land office of California.
