Deed |

Dickson County, Tennessee, USA [8] |
Deed of gifts from Elizabeth Walker to her "beloved son" Elijah Walker, giving him a slave girl named Ailee. |
The deed specifies that offspring of the slave are to be given to his sisters, Elizabeth Heartly, Polly Bazzell [Brazzell], and Ritha Turner. The deed is witnessed by George H. Walker.
This deed is important evidence of relationships, specifying that Elijah is the son of Elizabeth Walker, that Elizabeth, Polly, and Ritha, are his sisters, and that George H., also her "beloved son" is his brother.
It is also evidence of who the three named girls married.
On the same date, Elizabeth Walker also made a Deed of gifts to her son, George H., leaving him a slave boy. Elijah Walker witnessed this deed.
Subsequently, Archalaus Walker came from Illinois an filed an objection in circuit court, ultimately prevailing. The Fisher abstraction:

In court, it is ordered that Thomas Hunter will recover $158.60 debt from the estate of Elizabeth Walker. (Thomas Hunter vs. Jacob & George H. Walker). |
This could be a good avenue for research. That was a significant amount of money in that day and time. Who was Thomas Hunter, and why did Elizabeth Walker's estate owe it to him? Thomas Hunter appears in the 1820 Dickson County census, age 26-45 (born between 1775 and 1794), on page 10; Elizabeth Walker was on page 16. Elijah purchased 40 acres from a John Hunter in 1824.

HISTORICAL |
2 Feb 1836 |
Dickson County, Tennessee, USA [28] |
Humphreys County gained a good bit of land from Dickson and Hickman by act of legislature. |
This explains why Elijah paid taxes in 1835 Dickson County, but in 1837 Humphreys County. He didn't move--the county line did.
From Dickson the following area moved to Humphreys:
". . . all that portion of Dickson County lying in the following boundaries shall hereafter be attached to and belong to the county of Humphreys: -- Beginning at the southwest corner of Dickson County, and thence running east with the south boundary line of said county o Dickson, to where the said line intersects the ridge that divides the waters of Hurricane creek from the waters of Garner's creek; thence with said ridge, to where said ridge intersects with the ridge that divides the waters of Hurricane creek from the waters of Garner's creek; thence with said ridge, to where said ridge intersects with the ridge that divides the waters of Cumberland and Duck rivers; thence north westwardly with said ridge, to the line that divides the counties of Dickson and Humphreys; thence south with said line to beginning."
And from Hickman to Humphreys:
". . . all that territory and county now lying in the county of Hickman, within the following boundaries, shall hereafter belong and (be) attached to the county of Humphreys, to wit:--Beginning in the line dividing the counties of Hickman and Humphreys, where the same first strikes Duck River, running south from the north west corner of Hickman; running thence up with the meanders of Duck river, with the main channel, to where the middle of the main ridge dividing the waters of Sugar and Tumbling creeks strikes the river; thence a north easterly course, along the summit of said ridge, between the waters of said creeks, to the main ridge dividing the waters of Garner's and Little Hurricane creek; thence along the summit of the same to the north boundary line of Hickman county; thence west with said line to the north west corner of said county; thence south with the line dividing the counties of Hickman and Humphreys to the beginning."

Emigration |
1839 |
Dyer County, Tennessee, USA |
Elijah moved to Dyer County around this time. |
Since he sold his land on the Humphreys/Dickson County border it seems likely that he intended the move to be permanent.
The reason for this move remains unknown. Other familiar surnames appear near Elijah's, including two Sawyer families that appear to be related to the Sawyers with whom Archalaus was closely affiliated in Macoupin County, Illinois.
Additionally, a canal was cut shortening by 25 miles the path of the Forked Deer River of Dyer County to the Mississippi. This increased connection to major river traffic caused a boom in the town of Dyersburg and in 1836 the first steamship, The Grey Eagle, began regular trips. This history was gleaned from various places on the internet and a more serious look should be taken at contemporary newspapers or historical accounts to better understand if this might have been a motivator for Elijah's move.

Stephen Fielder, administrator for the estate of Elijah Walker, presented the settlement on this date. It was filed on 6 January 1875. |
Why, when Elijah had so many children, was the estate administered by Stephen Fielder? It would have been unusual for a daughter to administer.
Of his sons, Helton Rutherford had moved to Missouri a few months earlier; William K. lived in San Joaquin County, California; Levi lived in Illinois, James L. had died in the Civil War, George Neal died in 1867; Calvin M. and Arch were living in the area, but were age 24 and 22, possibly a little young to be expected to administer the estate; Jacob had probably already left home due to mysterious trouble and may have been in Arkansas; Alonzo Denson was underage. Elijah's eldest son, often believe by many to be "James Monroe Walker" was actually John M. Walker--and living out of the state in White Co ARK (he died just a year later).

Lee Lallier (Samuel)?1 segment, 16.93 cMs, suggesting a little higher than average 4C, or a little lower 3C1R; might share a great-great? This, however, would be Samuel. Lee only shares one segment, though it is substantial. More likely a random chunk from Samuel?s great grandfather?
Henry Brazzell (Polly) - 1 segment, 11.58 cMs, suggesting closest to 4C/3C2R, and high for 4C
Mary Ann Wilson (George H) ?1 segment, 11.58, chromosome 5, suggesting 4C/3C2R, and high for 4C
Josephine Jones (George H)
Jerrold Joseph Walker (Elijah) - many small segments, on large one, almost 20 cMs, indicating somewhere between 3C2R/4C and 3C2R

William Cannon Walker (b 1796, Jefferson Co TN) and Rebecca Ann Coffman
Elizabeth Walker (b. May 15, 1833, Limestone Co AL) and Jeremiah M. Stout
Samuel Baxter Stout and Mary Amanda Wheeler
Boyd Esther (Stout) Gay?mother of Joyce
In 1840 Dyer Co, Tennessee, Elijah Walker appears just one page after James Walker, Samuel Walker, and Cannon Walker
Ancestry trees indicate that Cannon Walker of Dyer Co was William Cannon Walker, who married Rebecca Ann Coffman; so of James and Fanny, etc.
John Porter McMeans' email telling me about a father/son pair of Archilus Walkers in Lauderdale County, Alabama. Another brother to Progenitor?
David Walker and Elizabeth Gilbert married in Goochland Co VA, 13 October 1770?possibility for Progenitor and Elizabeth? Probably not, since their first known child was born 1783. They could have had earlier, unknown children, but then her childbearing years would have spanned 1770-1803. If she was 16 when married, that would make her 48 at the birth of Elijah?a stretch but possible.
Boyd Esther Stout-Gay, Her parents were Samuel Baxter Stout and Mary Amanda Wheeler-Stout, Baxter's parents were Jeremiah M. Stout and Elizabeth Walker. Elizabeth Walker was born on May 15, 1833 in Limestone County Alabama and died on 27 Sept 1877 in Locksbury Arkansas. Her parents were William Cannon Walker (born 1796 in Jefferson county, Tennessee), married Rebecca Ann Coffman. William Walker's parents were James Walker of Virginia and wife Fanny. Father of James was John Walker.

No record of Elijah's first marriage has been located. Although Dickson County marriage records begin in 1817, a tornado on 30 May 1830 decimated the county seat of Charlotte, severely damaging the courthouse, and resulting in record loss.
- Elijah's first child,"J. M." (John M.), was born on 18 September 1824
- Elijah is probably one of the two males found in the 1820 census household of Elizabeth Walker
- In January 1824 Elijah Walker and wife, the "former Matilda King" appointed William Shelby as their representative in legal actions in Sullivan County, where Matilda's father died about 1814.
.
The marriage probably occurred about 1823 in Dickson County.

Notes |
Judge Elijah Walker of the Hickman County Walkers was born in Rockingham, NC. His family moved to Hickman County about 3 years later. About 1849 he was made a judge of his circuit and moved to Savannah, Hardin county, to be more central. He was married to a woman named "Mary E.", who survived him and moved to Maury County. He died on 31 December 1873.
The parallels with "our" Elijah are obvious:
- Our Elijah was born abt 1802 GA; he was born abt 1809 NC.
- Our Elijah married (second) a woman named Mary ("Polly"); the other married a woman named Mary
- Our Elijah died in 1872 leaving a widow, Mary Walker; the other died in 1873 leaving a widow, Mary Walker.
The differences are equally striking:
- Our Elijah was not a learned man, while the other was a judge
- Our Elijah bore about 16 children; the other was childless
- Our Elijah was not a wealthy man; the other was probably quite comfortable.
Regardless of these differences, the similarities are enough to confuse their identities in some cases.
A biography of Judge Elijah Walker can be found on GoogleBooks, in Eleventh Annual Meeting of the Bar Association of Tennessee held at Four Seasons Hotel, Harrowgate, Tennessee(Nashville, Tn.: Marshall & Bruce, Stationers and Printers, 1892), 113-121.

Early Walkers in Dickson and Hickman Counties
Two early Walkers mentioned are in Goodspeed's History of Hickman county. The first is Samuel Walker, cited as an early settler, arriving in the winter of 1806, just prior to the creation of Hickman county in 1807. The second was Joel Walker, appointed as one of the four first commissioners of the county, who were to "run the boundary lines, establish the county and select a county seat site." Establishing the lineage of these two could be helpful.
Jerome Spence and Davd Spence, _History of Hickman Co Tennessee_ (Signal Mountain, Tenn.: Mountain Press, 1990). Indicates that Allan Walker established Walker's Ferry, one mile above Centerville. "He reared a large family, which became prominent in the development of the county. His sons were: Joel, William, Allan, James, Pleasant, and Elijah. Dr. Joel Walker went to Williamson County, where he became prominent in business and political circles. Pleasant Walker represented Hickman County several terms in the legislature, and was sheriff of the county four years. Elijah Walker became one of the best judges that ever presided in a Tennessee courthouse. He was a good judge of law - not an eloquent speaker, but a profound thinker. He was honest in his decisions and would refuse a fee when his would-be client was in the wrong."
A direct descendant of Allen Walker to participate in the Walker DNA study?
