    Phil's email 5 Nov 2018:
    "Dear Janis,

It has been sometime since we last chatted about the 29th Illinois Infantry Volunteers. I thought of you last week while in Springfield on business when I squeezed out a couple of hours of research at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. What does one do with just two hours? After reading through their resources on the 29th, I was reminded that Joel DeBoard's diary was in its collection. I requested it and within ten minutes I was able to hold the diary and carefully look through it.

After trying to read through a few pages, I was immediately thankful for the time and effort you put into the transcription. It has been very valuable to me as I seek to understand additional detail on the lives of these young men from Southern Illinois.

As you are no doubt aware, Joel DeBoard's relation, William S. Bolerjack was also in Company G of the 29th. The diary was last in the possession of Donald "Mousy" Smith in neighboring Enfield, IL. The only listed facsimile of the diary was microfilm photos produced in the early 1980s at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a single copy at the Norris City, IL library.

I contacted the SIU library a number of months ago, only to find out they have lost their sole copy leaving Norris City as the only known copy. Upon contacting them to line up a visit (six hour drive), I was told their microfilm reader was not working properly and that copies would have to be transcribed. I talked further with one of the librarians who was sympathetic to my appeal for assistance. Bottom line, she was allowed to take the remaining microfilm to the next county and use their library's reader and make digital copies of all 178 pages.

The result is a couple of large pdf files that encompass Sgt. Bolerjack's three years of service giving even greater detail to the day to day movement's of the 29th Illinois.

Now, you may have already seen this in the past, but just in case you haven't seen the full diary, you can download the three pdf files from my Drop Box account at:

It helps to print it out and read from paper. Even then, it took me at least a week to work through it. Hopefully, you will enjoy reading through this diary account of yet another soldier of the 29th and a relative of Joel DeBoard.

    Have a great day!
