      5. _____, "Ann T." [see note below], 2, female, Tennessee
      6. _____, Mary C., 5 months, female, Tennessee

[Living next door to Esther's mother, Bedie (Clark) Thornton. "Ann T." listed in census was doubtless a misinterpretation. Son Thomas Newell was the right age for this position in the family, all of the other children are correctly named. It is possible that the initials "T. N." were reversed to "N. T." which sounds very like "Ann T."]

[William's middle initial in this enumeration was interpreted by Ancestry.com as a "W." However, a study of the enumerator's handwriting makes it more likely that it was intended as a "U." Since William's middle name was "Euen," this is an understandable error on the part of the recorder.

Bud's homestead proof states that he was away from his land from March to June of 1887 when he was "unable to work the land," returning when he was "better." Could this illness have been related to his early death in 1893?
    Occupation July-August 1887  [8
Bud's homestead proof states that he was away from his land for July and August of 1887 to haul dirt for the railroad. Presumably this work was necessary for the support of his family, to make up for the crops that he was unable plant in the spring.

    • From his own statements in November 1888, William E. Walker's home was "comfortable to live in the year around." It was a "box house," with rooms 14 x 16 and 10 x 12, and had a stone chimney worth $65. It was furnished with two bedsteads, a cupboard, a sewing machine, a clock, table and chairs, and a cookstove. The farm, which had about about 167 fruit trees, and 25 cultivated acres where every season since 1879 he had raised corn, wheat, oats, and vegetables. Trees on the place were black jack, black hickory, post oak, and brush. The family kept 2 mules, 1 cow, 21 hogs, 4 sheep, and chickens. Part of the place, he stated, was "too rough and stony" to be cultivated.
