Howell Jackson Thornton's limited CMSR is hard to read, but it appears that he enlisted in Voorhies 48th Tennessee Infantry on 2 March 1862, which would have been on the heels of the Confederate loss of Fort Donelson, where his older brother Benjamin and brother in law Helton Rutherford Walker were taken prisoner. |
