Bio of Elizabeth's husband's father and descendants in Sons of the Republic of Texas:"Dr. George Washington Barnett
The tale of George Washington Barnett, son of Margaret and William Barnett, born 12 Dec 1793, Lancaster Co., SC, William Barnett was sheriff of Lancaster District. George Barnett moved to Williamson Co., TN, where he practiced medicine and married, 06 July 1820, Eliza Patton. By Jan 1, 1834 he moved from Mississippi to Washington-on-the-Brazos and practiced median in Austin?s Colony.
In 1835, a company of Volunteers was raised in Washington with George W. Barnett as lieutenant This company marched to Gonzales and then to San Antonio, where they were under fire December 5-10, 1835. General Martin Perfectod Cos surrendered on December 10th.
In the elections held in Texas on Feb 1, 1836, George W. Barnett was elected as a delegate from Washington-on-the-Brazos. After adjournment of the convention, Dr. Barnett joined the Army. When General Houston decided to retreat, he gave permission to seek a place of safety for the families. Dr. Barnett and the families began their ?Runaway Scrape.? In an affidavit by Dr. Barnett on May 24, 1837, he stated that about April 18, 1836, he was in the town of Harrisburg. The Battle of San Jacinto was fought April 21, 1836 close by.
Eliza Patton Barnett was born 03 July 1802 in TN, died 21 Nov 1872 in Gonzales, TX. He died October 8/9 1848 in Gonzales Co., after escaping from an Indian raid when he went hunting. Evidence showed he had made a strong effort to defend himself. The body was interred in the old cemetery in Gonzales. In 1936, the Commissioner of Control, for Texas Cenetennial Celebraions erected a monument in George W.?s honor. When the Texas Star Museum was built at Washington-on-the-Brazos, a monument was placed with his name on it too. For his service in the Siege of Bexar, he received Bounty Certificate #320 acres in Gonzales; later he was granted 640 acres. He signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, on this document, as GW Barnett.
Granddaughter Ella Barnett, donated a cherry-wood drop leaf table to The Alamo and great-grandson?s widow, Mrs. John Ruckman Barnett, donated photos in one frame, of grandchildren Robert Lee, George Walker and Ella Barnett, including great grandson, John Ruckman Barnett, who was grandson of William Lockridge Barnett and Elizabeth Celina Walker. Wm. L. was born 03 Jan 1830, d 30 Aug 1896. mrs 28 Nov 1855 Elizabeth, who was b 23 Dec 1826, d 02 April 1920.

- Pratt and Fondy both listed George's wife as "Polly Adams." If he was married to a Polly Adams, it was prior to this marriage, and must have ended in her early death. Could Polly Adams have been the object of the bastardy bond in 1824?
Descendant Josephine H. Jones offers a marriage date of 9 September 1823, but no place of marriage.
