Stating that James Murrah Sherrill, born 1825 in Tennessee, was the son of Ambrose Sherrill and Peggy Hopkins; married "Chaney" [surname not stated] before 1852. It further adds that James Murrah Sherrill died about 1856-1857, and his widow Chaney was found in the 1860 Cedar County, Missouri, census.

Chaney Ann was residing in her father's home at the time of the census; her surname is difficult to decipher, but was certainly not "Sherrill." It is possible that she was married prior to 1850 and was bearing a married surname.

Chaney is head of household, and probably a widow. She has with her two children, born about 1852 and 1854. This makes it likely that her marriage year was 1851. Members of Chaney's family had ventured to California in 1847, and others soon after to Montana. It is possible that her husband went on one of these trips from which he never returned.
