  	From Elmer Best: ". . . shot in 1896, about 13. . . ." "My Aunt Margie (Myrtle Best) believed Clarence was shot in South Dakota, but I found two newspaper accounts placing it near Dorsey, Illinois. I believe my father was named for his uncle Clarence. One newspaper says the coroner ruled it an accident. I question the ruling. He was working at a neighboring farm. He went to collect his pay and inform the man he was quitting. The next day his lifeless body was found hanging in a barbed wire fence. A revolver was found on the ground. There were no ballistics tests. It seems he had stolen the gun from a visitor's buggy the Sunday before. I have to wonder why he felt he needed a gun. I spoke to the Madison Co. coroner, but there were no transcripts from the inquest."
