Patten, though the surname is spelled "Patton." Middle initial is right, birth state is right, place of residence in 1935 is right (he was in prison in Marin Co, CA), and age is within 2 years of correct age.]
  RESEARCH	FindAGrave shows a cemetery marker for "J. Royse Patten," in Snohomish, Washington. The death date is (or appears to be) 9 March 1967. The name of the record (not the name on the marker) is Joseph Royse Patten. However, J. Royse Patten married in Pierce County, WA, on 22 August 1967, to Nellie Marie Hopkins. The license and certificate stated that the groom was born in Greene Co MO and was 55 (birth year of about 1912). An additional oddity. Joseph's twin sister Josephine C. Patten was married a second time and divorced from Donald J. Hirst, whose death is reflected in the California Death Index as just one day earlier than Joseph's--on 8 March 1969. There is something wrong here, but it's hard to say what. Knowing that the family was engaged in illegal or scamming activity (patent medicine sales), one wonders if one brother assumed the identity of another to marry? Or to escape detection in some manner? This remains a mystery.
