John Lloyd Temple enrolled for Confederate service, as a private in Co. B, 42nd Tenn. Infantry on 22 October 1861. He was on furlough when most of his unit was taken prisoner at the fall of Fort Donelson in February 1862. A fifer, in January 1863 he was made the regiment's Chief Musician. On 16 July 1863 he deserted his regiment and in August (probably of the same year; the record is missing the year) he was captured for desertion. The notation on the carded record of capture is "Passed home."
Military expert Craig R. Scott informs that he would interpret this to mean that after deserting, John was captured by the Union Army, administered the oath of loyalty to the U.S. and sent home. |
