VELMA LAVERTY
The funeral will be today, March 5, for Velma Edith Laverty of Portland, who died March 3 of Cancer. Laverty, formerly of Cottage Grove, was 89.
She was born Aug. 27, 1904, in Lostine. After graduating in 1927 from Oregon Norma School, Laverty taught in Vale and in Salem. She moved to Cottage Grove in 1954, and to the Portland area in 1985.
Laverty attended Savage Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a member of the White Shrine, Order of Eastern Star. She remained active in teacher organizations following her retirement in 1970.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Arnold of Portland; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her husband, Glenn, died in 1980.
Today\'s service is at 1 p.m. at Pearson-Allen-Caldwell Funeral Home in Portland. Burial will be at Shields Cemetery in Cottage Grove.
