by Jeff Jardine (Bee Staff Writer)

[Joe Henry Tidwell, who built custom homes in Modesto [California] for nearly three decades, died Tuesday (February 8, 2000) at Guardian Rehabilitation Hospital. #He was 84. #Mr. Tidwell, born Sept. 26, 1915, in Pulaski, Tenn., moved to Modesto in 1944 and soon entered the Army for the final part of World War II. #He received his contractor's license in 1950 and built his first home on Trask Lane in the El Vista area. #It sold for $6,800. He built 400 more custom homes over the next 27 years. #With partners Al Flory and Jim Johnston, Mr. Tidwell developed much of the area between Rumble Road and Standiford Avenue and Tully Road and McHenry Avenue. Their homes featured hand-made cabinets and tongue-and-groove floors said grandson Greg Tidwell. #Mr. Tidwell also developed subdivisions known as North Star Estates, Greenwood Estates and North Hampton Parks I and II, and built his own home in the North Hampton Parks area. #He retired in 1977 during the building of North Hampton Phase III, which is north of Sylvan Avenue between Rexford Drive and Coffee Road. #Throughout much of his career, his three sons worked alongside him. Sons Charles and Edward Tidwell are still involved in custom-home construction. Son Joe D. Tidwell specialized in masonry and later began his own company, Tidwell Enterprises. #Mr. Tidwell was a 40-year member of the Old Fishermen's Club and an avid trapshooter who belonged to the Escalon Gun Club. #He helped build the Free Methodist Church at Rose and Briggsmore avenues and was among the original members. #Mr. Tidwell is survived by his sons, all of Modesto; wife, Dorothy Selander Tidwell of Modesto; stepchildren, Gloria Short and David Crator, both of Modesto, and Mark Crator of Ceres; brothers, Jimmy Tidwell and Sam Tidwell, both of Pulaski (Tenn.); sisters, Liz Davis and Mable Brown, both of Pulaski (Tenn.), Louise Michalik of Missouri (sic; wrong, should be Mountain Home, Arkansas) and Lillian Ursiny of Roseville (Calif.); and 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. #A funeral will be at noon Saturday at the Free Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson (Calif). Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lakewood Funeral Home in Hughson. #Remembrances may be made to the Free Methodist Church, 1520 Rose Ave., Modesto (Calif.) 95350.]"
